Community Tasting Notes (average 95.1 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 77 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wineguy75 on 6/4/2023 & rated 96 points: Drank from a friends allocation. 2 hour decant. Much more open than when we drank together in 2016 and in the heart of the drinking window with at least another decade to go. Ate with a steak, definitely steakhouse wine (911 views)
Tasted by amsterdeco on 3/30/2023 & rated 98 points: Fantastic wine. Tannins full resolved, an intoxicating bouquet and long finish. Can’t see it getting any better but glad I held this long. (914 views)
Tasted by TMOVino2 on 3/5/2023 & rated 95 points: Ruby red in color. This is still a very young wine. Acidity and abv heat a touch out of balance but not overly so. Aromas of plum, black and blue berries, oak spices, tobacco. I'd peg this maybe a point behind the 2013 I had last year. Still love these wines. Many compare to Scarecrow given proximity, but for me this falls firmly between Tin Man and Scarecrow. Which is fantastic for QPR. (1143 views)
Tasted by Cow Town on 1/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Tasted blind among other 2012s (Lokoya, Cardinale, Opus, Blankiet, Quintessa, Hobbs). Tied for #1 (w/ Lokoya). WHere others seeemed more one-note, the Greer was more evolved, multi-demensional. Just enough age to make it seem like it was firing on all cylinders. (1309 views)
Tasted by JJYoyo on 1/14/2023 & rated 90 points: 1 hr air. Well I read through other notes before opening this just to make sure I was not making a big mistake in terms of timing. Is this “blueberry milkshake” “fungible Napa” crap or is it a “ballerina”? Sadly, closer to the former, although @Acyso’s hilariously brutal takedown is unfair. This is not bad, but it is stereotype of Napa: dark, turgid, the taste equivalent of a “wall of sound.” Monolithic until near the very end of the bottle, when it finally started to lighten up and show some delineation between the black cherry, tar, and the oak and tannins. That said, there was also some jarring heat-induced meaty Mourvedre-like notes as well as some plum/fruitcake Syrah elements. No, it doesn’t taste like a Rhone - it tastes like a weird hybrid of a cab and a GSM. And yes there is a ton of “Rutherford dust” as another TN put it. It’s a definite and heavy style, not really aligned with my palate although others might enjoy the Phil Spector aspects of it more. At the elevated price, not for me.
Score: 90. Relative to expectations: - (1317 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 9/21/2022 & rated 94 points: No formal note, but this was lovely and right in my wheelhouse. The fruit was ripe and full, but also sported some red notes, which I tend to like. There’s a deftness here that I’ve found to be consistent across the few Greers I’ve had. A sense of balance and subtle restraint. Nicely done. (1189 views)
Tasted by Greg and Linda on 7/10/2022: Sampled it on Greer’s 28th birthday…spectacular! (1334 views)
Tasted by Cow Town on 5/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Might be my the “worst” Greer I have had - still a nice wine, just not up to its normal lofty standards (and was beat by a 2011 Pott HMSS, which was spectacular). Nice, smooth, balanced, but somehow easy and not very interesting. Everything, especially the nose, was a touch muted. Always happy to drink a Greer, but this one left me a little wanting. (1487 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 3/11/2022 & rated 94 points: A really fine showing, with loads of sweet cherry and currant notes, testing the guardrails of hedonism but managing (just) to stay on the highway. Fine-grained tannins. Won't be mistaken for Old World, but highly enjoyable. (1530 views)
Tasted by eschuldt on 2/2/2022 & rated 94 points: Consistent with last experience from score perspective, developing some tertiary flavors. For my palate this is nearing the end of the drinking window. (1743 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 11/15/2021: Really nice cab
Good ripe fruit with a slight herbal element night one. Never felt overly ripe or huge. Dark cherry and well balanced (1673 views)
Tasted by Jdwinedrinker on 10/9/2021: Drinking great. I had two bottles. Tried one several years ago and didn’t see it. This time a great wine. I will hold my 13-15’s (1598 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 7/19/2021 & rated 95 points: Outstanding smell and mid palate. Sweet black cherry, black currant, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, soft tannins, soft and seductive, 30 second finish. Ready to drink - in a really great spot. (1950 views)
Tasted by Cow Town on 3/27/2021 & rated 95 points: Another amazing Greer. Surprisingly young for a 2012, this took a good two hours to open up in the decanter, but following the evolution was fun. Dark, complex, long finish. Favorite wine of the night. (2049 views)
Tasted by jrobs7777 on 11/7/2020: Very good. I am not as bullish on this as other reviewers but this is still a very nice food friendly Cali Cab. Dark and brooding. Well balanced. Darker fruit and graphite and pencil shavings dominate. The finish is a bit clipped. This does not coat in the mouth as I would have expected.
It holds its own and is drinking well now. (2330 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 9/18/2020 & rated 95 points: Just a lovely refined cab with nice supporting structure, dark red fruit and a long harmonious finish. It is very pretty for a Napa cab with hints of graphite, earth and tobacco on the finish. Just nipped at the finish line by a 2013 O'Shaugnessy Mt Veeder cab which was a little more exciting but nitpicking between two wonderful wines made in different styles. (2357 views)
Tasted by lucaslabelle on 7/25/2020 & rated 97 points: From Magnum. Insanely good. Slow Ox'd for about 8 hours and was absolutely singing. The nose and palate were both beautiful. One of the best bottles (First Magnum) of Greer I've ever had. 97+ (2320 views)
Tasted by wcooper on 7/6/2020 & rated 96 points: Decanted for 3 hours and this wine was really singing. It had a wonderful texture and the flavor profile was all class. This wine is clearly in it's drinking window with a number of years to get even better. (2315 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 9/2/2019: Excellent and especially on night 2

This will go ages (2864 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/31/2019: Blind "Grand Cru" with Lobster & Flannery Steak (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind, easily identified as California Cabernet. Ultra modern, fleshy and hot. Well made, but not even close to a wine I enjoy, particularly at its price. (3449 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 8/31/2019: Very modern, polished, sweet and okay Napa Cab. Not my cup of tea. (2580 views)
Tasted by acyso on 8/31/2019 & rated 60 points: "Grand cru" blinds (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Just another in a clown parade of fungible Napa trash. Blueberry milkshake and oak. You should have to pay me $200 to drink this shit. (3761 views)
Tasted by brettay on 2/6/2019 & rated 96 points: Tied for 1st place (consensus amongst all tasters) with 2009 Colgin Estate in a blind tasting that also included 2010 Pride Cab Reserve, 2010 Spottswoode, 2012 Morlet Estate, and 2011 Shafer Hillside. Rich, powerful, complex and highly aromatic are qualities that describe this luscious Cab. It has big fruit but loads of complexity with mint, flowers, herbs and vanilla. Super easy to drink but also cerebral at the same time. (3172 views)
Tasted by WST on 10/21/2018: Whatcom Hospice House Charity Wine Dinner (Parkhurst Neighborhood, Bellingham, WA): If I ever had doubts about the effectiveness of decanting young wines, this bottle put them to rest. Upon opening, I was surprised by its austerity. When served after an eight hour decant, it was stunning. Not an overly ripe Napa cult wine, it was big but graceful, and a magnificent bottle. Black raspberry and cassis, with spice and mineral; perfectly balanced fruit, tannins, and acid cut. Also served with the Flannery NY Strip cubes with horseradish aioli and caramelized onion. (3222 views)
Tasted by ageverett on 10/6/2018 & rated 96 points: This guy is entering prime time. Black fruits generally, and a tinge of dark red. Rutherford Dust is present, and some nutmeg - really deftly crafted.

I am such a huge fan of this vineyard. Only wish I could get my hands on more of this.

This will age gracefully. (3374 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
