Community Tasting Notes (average 94.3 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by KPB on 8/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Opens with air, but an hour or two really makes a noticeable difference.

Very deeply colored, almost black, with a gentle nose showing ripe plums, mushroom, hints of menthol. Stunning on the supple, endless palate which reveals rich cassis fruit, the fading remnants of an acidic bite that probably was very evident when the wine was released and soft, polished tannins. The mineral lift on the finish carries it out almost endlessly. Mature and exceptionally enjoyable right now. 94 on day one, but I bet I'll revise my score upward after 24 hours to breath in the half-finished bottle. (573 views)
Tasted by SARED on 4/11/2020 & rated 94 points: Nose: Ripe black fruit, liquored yet not overripe.
Palate: Medium+ body yet the fruit feels thick and powerful. Primary black plum, some cassis with secondary notes of smoked cigar, cherry pits, and spice on the finish, which faded over time into more ripe dark fruited licorice. Definitely cleaned up with air.
Structure: Nice clean mouthfeel without overdoing the cassis/cedar notes. Nice cut of medium acidity. Medium finish.

Has the glossy black plum and clean mouthfeel of a Jamet syrah, with Cali fruit / alcohol instead of olives. I know its sacriledge etc. and its a cab... 93-94.. (1652 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 3/6/2020 flawed bottle: F***!

Opened for my birthday. Corked was clearly TCA tainted, but on initial pour into the decanter the nose was bright and fresh. However, the first taste and one an hour later left no hope but this was completely TCA tainted from a bad cork.

Thankfully, a cellar full of other beauties competing for my attention! But sadly, this was my last ‘09 Greer. (1557 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 9/29/2019 & rated 95 points: Captivating nose on opening, with rich floral and dark fruit tones wafting from the bottle as soon as I pull the cork. This seems to be at peak for my palate. The tannins lay out a fine blanket on which the black cherry, black raspberry, and faint brown spice notes strut their stuff. There’s a pleasing old leather element in the finish, which just rolls on and on. This was my first Greer and I’m smitten. Fantastic wine. (1471 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 8/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Dinner with Johnny & Ken (Wildfire Oak Brook): May have been in a somewhat closed down stage. Showed a lot of promise but I wanted more and I felt it wasn't giving what it could.
Plummy, dark charcoal, smokey.
Palate is moderate complex but showing just lots of purple fruit right now. Would love to revisit down the road. (1582 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 7/5/2019: There’s a touch of structure left here but for the most part this is in the zone. Silky, well made wine with good complexity. Drink now and over next 5-10 years. (1349 views)
Tasted by Lateva on 2/25/2019 & rated 96 points: Pop and pour. This was just wonderful. Great red fruited nose with tobacco, earth, and leather. Palate was perfectly balanced. A real treat to drink. (1173 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 2/3/2018 & rated 92 points: PnP and drank over 90 min. Bested a ‘09 Verite Joie. Definitely Cali. Mostly red fruit hint of menthol/mint. Tannins still in play. Not a lot of specifics as I didn’t pay attention ... gone before I did (1729 views)
Tasted by ozziewine on 9/29/2017 & rated 96 points: My first experience with Greer Cabernet and it was worth the wait!
Recent CT notes apply today. Just stellar. This has a soft, mellow essence that is soul satisfying!
I tried this with four hours of air and found it fading a bit (contrary to some previous reviews recommending extended aeration). So I drank on two different occasions with one pass through the Vinturi upon opening and liked it more that way. It has a youthful energy that way I find more appealing...which, when combined with its' complexity, makes for a fabulous wine.
I also tried the traditional Cabernet glass and the New World Pinot glass (with the flared rim) and found the latter a better match. The flavors expanded across the mouth and it was smoother.
And, as was mentioned in earlier notes, that nose. Wow. (1684 views)
Tasted by ews3 on 3/25/2017 & rated 94 points: Cassis, clove, violet, eucalyptus, dark chocolate, blueberry, black cherry. Also a "putty" note that sounds bad, but isn't. Interesting in that there's more herbal and spice in the forefront and more fruit in the background. Tannins are reserved and well balanced. Finish drops a bit but then the dark fruit carries on for quite a long time. (1929 views)
Tasted by rmh66 on 9/16/2016 & rated 94 points: Gave a few hours of air. Concentrated cassis, blueberry, bay leaf, violets, graphite, earth, a little cedar, and a little strawberry candy on the nose. Cassis, black cherry, tart cherry, earth, herbs on the palate. Nice acidity, mouth coating tannins, long finish. Delicious. Very exciting wine. Good complexity, big wine, not porty. (1837 views)
Tasted by Etonian on 4/27/2015 & rated 95 points: Needs a bit more air than the 2008. Slow ox'd for 8 hours at first. Initially showing cardamon and spice but over the next 3-4 hours started to open up a bit more. Ripe raspberry on the front. The middle and finish showed the darkest chocolate and a hint of smoke. Lively and intoxicating on the nose from initial opening. Early on day 2 a bit more cherry fruit and later on more savory. Worcesterchire Sauce with a touch of Heinz 57. Looking forward to the 2012's later this year. (2624 views)
Tasted by EyeDoc on 12/26/2014: Pop and Pour. Pretty nose with a hint of eucalyptus. Palate demonstrates some licorice and sour cherries. Long finish - tannins are ripe but a bit out of balance. Needs some aging to really shine. (2579 views)
Tasted by jaylew1 on 11/6/2014 & rated 96 points: Best cab I have had in a year. The 2009 vintage can be a little hit or miss for me, but this is an unabashed pleasure. I always see colors more than flavors and this is a black-fruited gem with a very expressive nose. Still young to be sure, but watch out! (2240 views)
Tasted by rdsboca on 3/8/2014 & rated 97 points: This was my second favorite wine of the night and the group's favorite of the flight. I couldn't write notes on this one because the small pour we each got was gone from my glass in a second. Couldn't put it down. Floral, violets, yummy. (2558 views)
Tasted by wineberg on 6/28/2013 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 12+ hours. Leftovers rebottled and recorked overnight. 14.5% ABV

Negligent and didn't do a note at the time of consumption, so this is somewhat abbreviated note from memory, and not as in depth as normal.

This wine was incredibly tight and pretty closed...even the next morning, after being open for 24 hours, it was still very tight and hadn't changed a whole lot. Subtle black fruit, graphite, hints of florals, great structure, huge smooth tannins. A monster in the making I think, when this reemerges it will be great. 93+++

Probably best just to leave these alone for a few years. (2831 views)
Tasted by sqn19 on 6/9/2013 & rated 94 points: Far too young to open, needs long decant - after overnight, this was deep dark fruit, impeccably structured. This is one of the elite cabernet sauvignon's being produced in Rutherford today. (2389 views)
Tasted by elamasters on 4/6/2013 & rated 94 points: Eric's 40th Birthday Party: Really young and very tight right now. With coaxing, it becomes evident that it has a very dense core loaded with dark fruit, fresh flowers, and herbs but it is closed up tight right now and not giving much away. It is very structured with seriously grippy tannins. Even 24 hours later, this is still tight and closed. I think this will take considerable time to unwind, but I get the sense that this will be terrific when it hits its stride. (2835 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
