Community Tasting Notes (average 89.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 47 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oxwombat on 1/18/2023 & rated 91 points: Rogue night at Mato in Hong Kong. P&P with friends.

Contrary to some of the other notes here, this bottle was in perfect condition and still kicking strong. Great freshness and fruit, very structured and bold body yet supported by a strong line of acidity that balanced things throughout. Over-delivered compared to expectations and was the wine to kick off the line-up. (941 views)
Tasted by petervlam@skpnet.nl on 1/17/2023 & rated 89 points: 20230117 DDM Rioja & Ribera del Duero: Bruinrood, flink depot. Kers, bosgrond, kokos, rozebottel en laurier in de neus. In de smaak kers, mooi vanille, rozebottel, gelaagd, koffie, mokka chocola. (917 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/17/2023: Slightly rustic bouquet with a lot of vanilla, coconut and laurel. On the palate red and dark berries, sweet spices, oak, mild tannin and fairly high acidity. This wine is very mature and past its peak now. (1059 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/29/2021: Funny - very savory right now, almost with a touch of tomato. Not the dark brooding power that I would have expected. And savory on the palate, with more acidity than I would expect. (1956 views)
Tasted by KarlO_CC on 9/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Deep red. Hint of leather and pencil on the nose. Smooth at start, fresh berries (surprise for a 23 year old). Really fresh and long aftertaste. The freshness and high acidity is really special. (1765 views)
Tasted by brh_wine on 5/11/2019 & rated 90 points: Fully mature. Fruit muted, fading but still present. Very soft tannins. Drink up and you will be very pleased. (2853 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 4/1/2018 & rated 86 points: Opened but not decanted for 4 hours before serving and then drank over the next 2 hours. Almost coal-black totally opaque but ruby at the edges. Nose of anthracite, very very dark black fruit but not yeilding much....then high-toned black boot polish and glossy black leather shoes. Palate is linear, slightly sour dates, anthracite coal...linear and structured but with tannins that have now softened and mellowed too much. Mildly resonant and reverberant but no 'wow' factor. This is past its best....I wanted to enjoy this far more than I could. (4107 views)

Tasted by Tony Molester on 5/29/2016: Signs of seepage. Cork fully soaked. Decanted and tasted with osso bucco. Heavy sediment.
Muted aromas. Air does very little to coax the wine beyond that.

On the palate, the wine has a tired flavour profile. Some oak, but everything lacks focus. Tasted over 90 mins, the wine showed very little evolution, and remained 2 dimensional.

Very disappointing given the producer and pedigree. Will need to try more recent vintages to gain some perspective on this wine's ageing curve.

Tasted by BuzzzzOff on 12/4/2015 & rated 92 points: We opened nearly 4 hours and let this Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero (Castilla y Leon) - a member of the Vega-Sicilia clan. Dark, purple, murkiness on the eye...an "event gown" if we ever saw one! Perfume of
fabulous, still fresh red fruit, espresso and some toasty smoke that no doubt reflects the ageing of 14 to 20 months in French oak and another 15 months in the bottle before release. Despite it being night-time, we are keen on another whiff of espresso...it will not impact our sleep! Palate of elegant, slightly and subtly noticeable tannins at this point, mature red berries with a fairly long finish. She is dainty and delicate so be careful...we do not think the shock of decanting, if it can be avoided as air definitely necessary, is the way to treat her. She could be very temperamental!!! Incidentally, the QPR for a 17 year old wine is, well, a big yippee!!! (5322 views)
Tasted by blanquito on 11/8/2015 & rated 87 points: Nice wine here, but it doesn't have the stuffing to hold up to all its American oak. It's a shame because the fruit is a very pretty red cherry with bright acids and the wine is extremely classy, even regal in a fairly light weight package. But the bouquet is all sawmill and the finish is rough and woody with oak tannins. Still, I enjoy it despite the forestry. Drink now or so. (4390 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/24/2015 & rated 90 points: Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2015-06; Classical Spanish wines (by DJ): Garnet red. A firm amount of deposit in the bottle. Deep and beautiful bouquet with dark berries, caramel, oak, sweet licorice, mushrooms and autumn forest. On the palate dark forest fruits, oak, sweet spices like cinnamon, good acidity and melted tannin. A wine at the end of its peak, but still a great pleasure to drink. Drink very soon! (4588 views)
Tasted by andtheodor on 11/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Campfire, old damp wood, plum, tobacco, cocoa, berry. Still ample tannin behind a veil of sweet old wood and pert acidity. Pretty good, likely not getting better at this point. (3528 views)
Tasted by PC73 on 4/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Lovely drinking at the moment.
Good balance of fruit and secondary notes coming through. Oak still present.
Cassis, chocolate on the palate. Tannins still present.
Suspect this will keep going a couple more years. (3436 views)
Tasted by yiuwing_hk on 1/29/2014 & rated 93 points: This bottle is much better than my last one, well mature notes of tea leave, blackcurrant, cassis, dark chocolate, coffee. Palate is also nicely balanced with long linguring fruit finish. (3254 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 1/25/2014 & rated 89 points: Tasted blind: Garnet in color. Nose of berries and coffee. Actually the wine had a very rich and multilayered nose. But once it hits the taste but the wine can not deliver what one would expect, it is quite short, not really balanced and has some dry tannins. On the positive side there is a nice sweetness of ripe berries and coffee. One would not really expect a Ribera del Duero. Overall a nice wine but a few years past its peak. (3116 views)
Tasted by Sergio Casado on 12/21/2013 & rated 91 points: En nariz intensidad media/alta. Notas cerezas, ciruelas, licorosas. Taninos suaves, arropados por una muy buena acidez. Sabroso y con postgusto largo que deja recuerdos de chocolate y ligeras notas a tabaco. Agradable sorpresa por los comentarios anteriores poco favorables. (3249 views)
Tasted by yiuwing_hk on 7/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Ruby color with slightly garnet rim. Quite pronounce nose of dried flowers, elegant cherry, coconut, spices. Palate is relatively weak, mainly red fruit, and fruit intensity increased a little after 1.5hr, and the length is medium with simple fruit finish. (3133 views)
Tasted by Rnarkiss on 3/16/2013: like everybody have said....Ishould have drink it a few years ago.
Nice flavour, stays a few minutes in the glass... (3119 views)
Tasted by Pinotphile123 on 2/27/2013 & rated 90 points: Wow, wasn't expecting this to be too great and well passed its limit. Whilst is for sure maybe a little past its peak, it is drinking quite nice.
Still good colour, soft & delicate tannins, chocolate, cassis, black currant. Nice wine for a Wednesday with a Moroccan chicken curry and oh nearly forget a wedding anniversary! (2751 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 11/15/2012: Historical & Vertical Alión Tasting (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid): Chocolatey nose. Also mineral. Timid but good, very good. High acidity on palate. Ready now.

Nariz achocatelada. También mineral. Tímida pero buena, muy buena. Alta acidez en boca. Lista ahora. (4101 views)
Tasted by rbs1 on 10/14/2012 & rated 89 points: Unfortunately past it's prime. (3056 views)
Tasted by SoCal on 8/6/2011: Purple core with light edges. A Seductive aged scents, cherry, leather, spice, and funk. There is harmony with oak in a much softer fruit forward style. The mouth feel is much less extracted than other vintages I have had. Overall the wine is drinking great now and I would not hold much longer. (3713 views)
Tasted by ZorroCT on 7/27/2011 & rated 89 points: I didn't think that this was way over the hill already, but it has lost its umpf. Still had a bit of tannin when first opened -- which quickly faded. Cherry with slight notes of vanilla. Has not gained in complexity and was a little thin. Still a decent drink but pop it now. (3524 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 3/6/2011 & rated 88 points: OK so not the best vintage, but the wine had plenty of character and a lovely balance. Quite enjoyable but probably not going to get any better. I'd recommend drinking up. (3655 views)

Tinto Fino

Tinto Fino or Tinta del País is the local name in Ribera del Duero for Tempranillo, probably Spain’s most famous grape. The name relates to the early fruit ripening, ideal for the harsh continental climate and short growing season of the region.

In Ribera del Duero Tempranillo yields smaller berries, loose clusters and tougher skin, which encourages more skin-to-juice contact and promotes full-bodied, powerful wines that still retain the grape’s renowned elegance. It’s a vibrant, aromatic variety that offers spicy, red fruit aromas and flavors.

The combination of power and elegance represents Tempranillo’s signature in Ribera del Duero, and the region’s singular contribution to winemaking today.

Spain

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
