 Tasted by mchern02 on 4/20/2024 & rated 94 points: 3 hour decant

Stony, rich and pure. Quite a transparent color with beautiful tone and texture. Great length, young and polished tannins; really approachable and dynamic. Burgundian (254 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 3/28/2024 & rated 93 points: Bright red cherry fruit. (331 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 2/28/2024 & rated 92 points: This is good. Deep and intense, earth and leather along with damson notes. Fruit not completely covering the bones here.. full bodied but slightly more austere than the 2010, big structure of course. Long and complex, drinking perfectly now. (445 views)
Tasted by acyso on 5/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Sangiovese study, Volume II (Chicago, IL): There is a slight woodsiness to this that doesn't get in the way of the fruit. Probably more a symptom of youth than anything here. Again, classic crystalline red fruit from the estate with a bright, lifted profile. It doesn't seem to have as much palate weight here, so this is likely one that is better drinking on the relatively younger side. (1991 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 4/28/2022: In the glass this has a vivid ruby core with a hint of bricking at the rim. The nose at the initial pour was all funk, manure, & healthy fresh earth. With time in the glass scents of dried red fruits, leather, & tobacco emerge. The palate Leads with tart cherry, strawberry, orange rind, & clove along a medium length finish. From a difficult yet not disastrous vintage, for a wine of this quality & pedigree to be this delicious and still holding structure that could allow this to improve a little within the next 4-8 years is why I love these wines. Outstanding!! (2178 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 2/5/2022 & rated 93 points: 3-4 hours in the decanter helped to loosen this up. Lots of cherry, strawberry and balsamic on the nose with dried florals. Very rich, fruit forward and silky on the palate. Impressive concentration while staying light on its feet. Fairly young in profile. One to hold in the cellar for at least five years. (2571 views)
Tasted by jhngo on 5/23/2021 & rated 92 points: good wine medium fruit savory red. would be great with pizza. (2677 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 5/1/2021 & rated 94 points: Nose: This is all about elegance and poise as it shows off deep tones of strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, tobacco, spice notes, roasted herbs, and crushed rocks.

Taste: The feel is Medium/Full bodied with tart, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium+ tannins. The structure still shows a lot of youth, but this is expressive with refined tones of strawberries, red cherries, raspberries, tobacco, roasted herbs, and crushed rocks.

Overall: This is gorgeous now and there is more that this can give. This received several hours of air and while that allowed it to show itself, this easily has another gear or two to go. (2472 views)
Tasted by mchern02 on 3/31/2021 & rated 93 points: Love this wine

Woodsy, mineral, and dark black and blue fruit with attractive flowers. Palate is young and slightly unrevealed with good structure length and verve. Continued future goodness here. (2413 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 10/18/2020: I gave this about three hours of air before bringing it to The Leopard. What a delicious and beautiful wine. It has such beautiful balance and poise. Lovely red fruit. While '11 is not a heralded vintage, I found plenty of great wines and freshness to the vintage; that freshness is present in this wine also. But the balance is what is really compelling here. Bottle 1 of 5. Loved it. (2285 views)
 Tasted by mchern02 on 8/29/2020 & rated 93 points: 2 hour decant

Nose was a bit more subdued than the last bottle with more notes of flowers, the woods, minerals, earth, and crystallized black and blue fruit. Body is quite elegant and smooth with an attractive backbone supporting acid, young but sweet tannin, and redder fruit. Quite a balanced finish and beautiful front to back. (2057 views)
Tasted by Kirk Grant on 5/24/2020: This has been open about 2 hours now in a decanter. No bricking to indicate 9 years post vintage, but there is a lovely tobacco & black cherry note on the nose. The palate leads with tannin, followed by a burst of red fruits and spice in the mid-palate then the tannin resurfaces as the finish is bone dry, but the acidity leads to a mouth-watering that last as long as the finish. Outstanding!!! and I'd expect this is in a lovely spot to check in on if you have a few bottles. I'll hold my remaining bottle for another 3-5 years. (2254 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 5/15/2020: Similar to my note of four years ago, and ageing about where I'd imagined. Which is to say this is in a great spot just now. Audozed 2 hrs, this continued to add flesh and sophistication as it aired in the bottle. Succulent red fruits tinged with soil, herbs, and some leather; some initial V/A dissipated rather quickly. Just lovely, and it was gone too quickly. 14,0% abv. Drink now and the next 7-10 years. recommended

Tasted by TuscanSon on 5/11/2020 & rated 94 points: 3 hour decant, and got better over the 2 hours of drinking. This wine is still very bright and fresh. Classic sangiovese, red fruit. Woodsy, bramble, mushroom, mint complexity. Oak is subtle (perfect for me). Med(+) body; med(+) acidity. tannins are smooth - its ready to drink if you want it really fresh - which for penne alla vodka w sausage this was exactly right. For sure has a decade plus of fantastic drinking (1957 views)
 Tasted by mchern02 on 4/25/2020 & rated 94 points: 3.5 hour decant

Beautiful balanced and perfumes nose of candied blueberries, floral, smoked cocoa beans, caramel, and spicy minerals. Majestic body with fantastic balance, Youthful teasing tannins, and nice spine. Finish is fresh with minimal dryness and medium length.

This wine to me defines balance; it is youthful, drinking fresh tonight, has great lift and will get better with age. If anything, finish falls a bit short of other aspects of the wine but nevertheless is a great young drinker which can go on for many years.

Tasted by weezie on 12/27/2019 & rated 94 points: Was very tight and a bit overpowering initially, with strong oak notes. After a short decant and 20 minutes in the glass, this softened and opened up to reveal cherry, blackberry and peppery notes. Remained structured and broad shouldered throughout- standing up well to a dry aged prime rib. Thoroughly enjoyable, although I’d like to try this in a few years to see how it evolves and if it reveals any additional layers of complexity. Today, it was probably a 93.5, but with definite upside potential. Not sure it quite delivered the ‘wow’ factor I was hoping for tonight, especially given the price. (1759 views)
Tasted by RussK on 10/27/2019 & rated 90 points: Russk. 90+. (1672 views)
Tasted by RedWineLover66 on 10/4/2019 & rated 92 points: Good quaf, but probably should have drank a year or two ago. Seems a bit past it’s prime. (1588 views)
Tasted by IvanLi on 1/29/2019 & rated 95 points: Maraschino cherries, bay leaf, florals, camphor and sandalwood reveal themselves on day 2.
Needs time or at least a 5 hour decant as the wine didn't show much on the first day pnp.
Better after 2022-2025. (2282 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 12/15/2018 & rated 94 points: Coravin sample. Consistent with previous notes and only somewhat less impressive. Drink now or keep. (2061 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 8/8/2018 & rated 93 points: The nose was so beautiful and floral. Initially a bit tight on the palate. After decanting for 30 mins, the wine blossomed with potburri, flowers, red currant and spice. Palate was very precise and elegant with minimal rustiness of brunello. If you love burgundy, this is your wine. (2382 views)
Tasted by Phenol73 on 7/16/2018 & rated 94 points: Had next to the 2013. Beautiful aromas of orange peel, mint, leather, clove, sweet spices. The palate is superb; typically well structured and core of ripe berry fruit. Wonderful complexity, though tonight not quite the panache and elegance of the 2013. (2193 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 7/4/2018 & rated 96 points: Wonderful aromas of red fruit, roses. Fragrant, soft but with structure, lovely fruit coupled with superfine tannin. Great balance and elegance. Expensive but exceptional in every way. Drinks well now and for years to come. (2032 views)
Tasted by Lyubomir Lefterov on 4/6/2018 & rated 96 points: @ Enoteca di Piazza Montalcino: Bursting with intensity, floral, iodine, dark berries, in the mouth, juicy, intense, perfectly tuned and balanced, from start to finish, another exceptional Brunello from Poggio di Sotto. (2093 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 3/10/2017: Gambero Rosso Singapore 2017. Sniff, sip, spit. Only impressions.
Without a doubt. Head and shoulders above the rest. The most memorable red wine of the event.
Silky smooth tannins, mouth-feel, and lovely elegant red Sangiovese fruit that caresses the palate tenderly.
This is the real kind of elegant pure red fruited Brunello I am thirsting for! By the way, the only wine I did not spit at the tasting. (2486 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
