Tasted by acyso on 4/27/2024 & rated 93 points: SangioFest, Volume III "It's my favourite spot" (Chicago, IL): Just not a wine that should be opened anytime soon. A big, burly structure that feels very unyielding and stern, despite the delicious, bright red fruit on the nose and palate. It feels a little clumsy right now, but there's clearly plenty of material that just needs time to fully express itself. Impressive for its stature and potential right now. (960 views)
Tasted by NickA on 1/27/2024 & rated 92 points: A very nice wine, but not a transcendent one, nor quite justifying the price. Shimmering, ripe, delicious red fruit and a healthy kick of acidity despite the vintage made for a delightful wine to drink, but I didn't see anything on offer that you couldn't have got from (e.g.) Potazzine Brunello.  Tasted by Raizes on 5/26/2023 & rated 93 points: (2271 views)
 Tasted by mchern02 on 2/24/2023 & rated 92 points: 3 hour decant

Big, rich and bright aromas of chocolate, anise, bright red fruits. Palate starts our dry, with limited weight on mid palate but long young finish. Bigger, warmer and bolder than this wine is in its better vintages; will try again in a year. (2239 views)
Tasted by Brian of Mull on 10/28/2022 & rated 94 points: Opened for 30 minutes. Color is translucent ruby. On the nose: Kirsch, rose, strawberry and some licorice. On the palate: Kirsch, rose, orange zest and licorice . Can feel the tannins a bit on the finish. Nice acidity. Decent length. Very young , needs more time to open up… but this is really a beautiful wine. The flavors are really beautiful. I have had this wine (different vintage) on Lake Como before at dinner and I am transported back there right now. I would give this a few years to age but really worth a try. (2486 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 9/17/2022 & rated 89 points: 淡宝石红色。闻香有红果,香水气息,些许草药味,一点果糖,还有饼干的香气,入口酸度高,单宁紧涩,有点糊嘴,颗粒打磨得很细,樱桃、蔓越莓一类红果香气为主,后段些许酒精感,口感喝上去比较简单,酒体有点散,余味红果为主。看到酒标的时候我有点诧异,如果是这样的话,可能是一支进入封闭期的酒,今天没在状态,完全打不开,目前不在适饮期。 (2456 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/8/2022 & rated 94 points: Very good indeed. This was flown to Bali in checked-luggage, which may have contributed some bottle shock, or it could just have been the overall youth of the wine, but it felt a little constricted, not really showing its chops fully. Nonetheless though, it still really good and more than a little delicious. What a lovely nose this had - strikingly complex and full for something so young, it wafted out of the glass with ebullient aromas of damp earth and truffles, dark cherries and violets, with a little little savoury meatiness anchoring it all. The palate was a half-step behind at this point, coming across just a touch simpler in its tones of dark cherries infused with a lovely bit of spice and earth, some violets at the edges. This was far from one-dimensional though - there was certainly plenty character to this, with no lack of complexity for a wine of its age. What was remarkable for me though was just how very elegant and polished this was. There was plenty of authority to the wine, but it bore its weight and power effortlessly, with beautifully shaped tannins and wonderfully integrated acidity wrapped like a velvet robe around the palate. There was a lovely purity to it too, with a ringing clarity at its core. Great finish too; very nice length, bjg a bit tighter here, with the structural elements - tannins and acid - sticking out a little more and the fruit going a little quiet. I was very taken by this - a lovely drop, a little tight, but with such wonderful potential for the future. I would love to try this again a decade or two down the road - it should be a world beater then. (2671 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 6/4/2022 & rated 95 points: Pop and pour to explore over 2-3 days while on holiday.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of fine leather, Tuscan earth with dust, classic sour red cherries, incredible perfumed red spice fragrance with more air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, lovely balanced juicy high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), smooth fine high tannins, medium+ maybe gently full bodied. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of classic Morello red cherries, juicy red plums, fine red spice, fine leather, inner red licorice becoming more obvious with more air. Very long finish.
This good, this really good. Already highly appreciable now, and ageable too. (1965 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/30/2022 & rated 90 points: The Grand Finale: The Last Plum Tasting & Wine Sale (Chicago, IL): Probably not the best showing of this wine -- slightly too volatile on the nose, obscuring the clean fruit that I've generally liked in the Poggio di Sotto wines. Seems oakier and larger scaled than the 2001 Decennale and 2006 Brunello that I had. Perhaps this is but a question of this needing more time? (2344 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 3/16/2022 & rated 94 points: Elegant and pretty, as you'd expect from Poggio -- with a bit of air this is already quite expressive and drinking great, but of course the structure is here for this to age nicely for quite some time. (1599 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 1/14/2022: $100+ Blind Tasting (Bin 75 Alpharetta, GA): Pretty ruby with onion skin rim; very Burgundian, sexy red fruit, tart and sour cherry, mineral, so refined, a little cloudy at this point Barolo/Brunello; ah yes this makes sense. (1950 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 12/15/2021 & rated 93 points: Poured into a decanter to serve. Nose exhibits tar, rose petals, spice, clove, and red berries. Palate shows the elegant style of the producer. It is medium-bodied and ethereal. It has opened up nicely after an hour. (1702 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 4/14/2021 & rated 93 points: SLDS April 2021: Charcoal, smoke, red berries - good floral lift adds some prettiness. Plenty of structure through grip and bright acidity. High quality, very young, but still a strong showing. (1672 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 1/26/2021 & rated 94 points: Served blind into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Flower” day): bright pale ruby, brilliant colours.

Highly youthful on nose and on palate with high definition red cherry and plummy fruits. Florals too. 93-94 points easy.

2nd round: youthful red cherries, floral spices. Slow evolution.

3rd round: super fresh and primary red fruits that is not unlike Giuseppe Mascarello’s style. Clearly the youngest wine among the batch tonight here. (3272 views)
Tasted by BAJRiley on 1/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Brunello Masterclass at Wine Library, Sydney. Medium ruby - lighter than others in the bracket. Nose: ripe red cherries and roses. Very fragrant. Palate: tannins noticeable but the most restrained in the bracket. Medium to light bodied with a nice core of acidity, lingering finish. Lovely wine, would love to taste it in 10-15 years.  Tasted by JOsgood on 7/2/2020 & rated 94 points: Super delicious, love the elegance and balance here. (3982 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 2/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Tasting (Bridgeport Arts Center - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Ripe yet bright red cherry with impressive weight and depth already coming across. Classic style that I very much appreciate. (3790 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 2/26/2020 & rated 94 points: 2020 Tre Biccheri (Bridgeport arts center, Chicago IL): Nose: While there is a bit of tightness to the nose, it is still expressive and deep with red cherries, strawberries, sour red berries, crushed rocks, herbs, licorice, earth tones, and violets.

Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with tart, high acidity and chewy, high tannins. The tannins also have a fine-grained quality to them and the feel is deep with red cherries, strawberries, crushed rocks, sour red berries, licorice, and earth tones.

Overall: This is already tremendous and it will get even better. There is a ton to like already here as it possesses great amounts of depth and balance already with good complexity of sour red fruits. (2852 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 2/21/2020: 2015 Brunello di Montalcino, new releases (Montalcino centro): Benvenuto Brunello 2020, Montalcino

Good soil, bright red cherry, some eucalyptus, citrus, and fresh leather. The palate is that power-meets-weightless genre, with significant focus, flavor, and elegance. This is a home run, and I can only imagine it in a few more years. Red-fruited, vivid perfumes, elegant mouthfeel, and a long, deep finish. Wow. highly recommended, drink 2025-2041.

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
