| Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by MusignyBlanc on 6/8/2013: This bottle seemed a bit out of balance to me. Still a huge wine with forward and sweet fruit, spice, and alcohol. This wine would seem to be able to go another 20 years, but don't know whether it will improve - somewhat port-like. (2066 views) | | Tasted by Burgundy Al on 8/4/2012: Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Boysenberry and black cherry aromas, similar flavors. Big fruit, very fat, fairly hot, then also slightly bitter near the end. Surprisingly fresh for its age. Clearly New World, tough to identify varietal, but I correctly guessed Zin. I didn't like this wine, although others enjoyed this far more today. Still very substantial dark berry fruits in front of prominent acids. Shows some age with more air but drank very nicely overall. Terrific. Although stored on its side since I received it, there were some problems with a very dry cork - it crumbled to pieces and I ended up pushing it into the bottle and then decanting. Some minor bricking on the edges, and a full nose of vanilla and berry. Upon decanting it was still very closed, but the wine was young with elegant but full-bodied fruit, soft tannins and a surprisingly long finish with a soft mouthfeel. If I didn't know what this was, I would not have guessed Zinfandel. The next day I thought the wine was more characteristic of the variety, with a more typical Zinfandel nose. Some of the fruit had dropped out with some slight sour berry taste and the tannins were more pronounced. Definitely a wine better enjoyed on the first day (after decanting). A silky smooth zin; a style you really don't see nowadays. (3035 views) |

Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyDry Creek Valley Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley | Dry Creek Valley Association | Appellation America | San Francisco Chronicle Article |
