Tasted by wsammons on 5/20/2022 & rated 94 points: Based on a group rating - this needs a bit of air to blow off the funk; this is a very good wine that is likely in its prime or on the back end

This was a lot of secondary flavors with a melange of dark fruit and some barnyard to it. Still very good (654 views)
Tasted by Two Winos on 5/12/2018 & rated 91 points: In need of a decant to open this up a little...but it doesn't need long. Very enjoyable, but not much "pop" left to it. (2110 views)
Tasted by Cipivts on 1/27/2018 & rated 94 points: Pale garnet, intense nose, farmyard, barnyard, cigar box, jammy black fruit. On the palate good kick, jammy fruits, but good medium high acidity. Beautiful integrated tannins. Drinks amazing after 22 years! (2029 views)
Tasted by sc03852 on 1/19/2018: Dark dense berries. Soya sauce. Umami. Rosemary & thyme. Hint of leafiness. Nose is juicier and riper than palette. (2059 views)
Tasted by HDM1000 on 5/10/2017 & rated 98 points: One of the best wines I've ever tasted - and drinking perfectly right now (after 3 hours decanting). (2490 views)
Tasted by SoundinBetween on 1/2/2016: color of deep crimson, this wine is very opaque. the nose draws you in with anise, licorice, bay leaf all in very full and clear presence. the palate offers the same and also garrigue, very savoury herbal flavors of white pepper. med- acid, very little tannin. decanted and served 2.5 hours later, this was in a nice place. (2711 views)
Tasted by eb1202 on 12/18/2015 & rated 94 points: Unbelievable strong plum, dark berries and dried fruits on the nose. Very complex. Cherry, tabacco and some spices on the palate. Good depth and texture. Soft and well integrated tannins. Long aftertaste.
Great Chateauneuf which is on it's peak now. (2021 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 7/17/2014 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous wine at its apogee. Way better than my last note. It is time to drink this wine. This was tasted against 25 other Rhones and was in the top 5. My last bottle. (2494 views)
Tasted by johneagle on 12/11/2013 & rated 93 points: Excellent architipal Chateauneuf that is in its perfect drinking window right now. (2701 views)
Tasted by rSyver on 6/29/2013 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous note. Terrific state at the moment, still time to go. One of the better chateauneuf in a long time. (2703 views)
Tasted by rSyver on 2/4/2012 & rated 92 points: Deep red on colour, only hints of ruby on there rim. Very complex nose where the is plums, dried fruits coming trough, some oak, mint and a nice touch of spices; pepper in particular. Great complex fruit, full bodied, the fruit follows through. Great long finish with mature fruits and hints of spices. Soft tanins and terrific acidity to match the great fruit.

This wine is at a great state now, but will hold. Well worth the wait!!! (3182 views)
Tasted by Pierre-Yves on 11/25/2011 & rated 89 points: Nice to have an aged Chateauneuf that is not too expansive.
Not too much alive, a bit hot at the end, sweet and meaty. Paired well with Turkey and cranberry sauce. (3330 views)
Tasted by pskard on 8/18/2010 & rated 94 points: Plumme, kirsebær, sigar, noe grønn pepper, solbær, eik integrert og mocca på nesen. Full kropp med dybde og god tekstur. Konsentrert. Avrundede og integrerte tanniner. Lang ettersmak. (3577 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 8/8/2010: Marked improvement over last year’s bottle. Tonight was outstanding. Terrific nose of cherries, tobacco and earth. Peppery and spicy on the palate with a long finish. (2765 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 1/21/2010 & rated 84 points: This was a relatively poor showing. Fading and a bit tired and alcoholic. (2715 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 7/31/2008 & rated 92 points: GoP 4.8 - Wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (with a little detour) (Extra Space, Singapore): Most modernly styled of the night, not what I am used too with CdP, but very nice. I found this amazingly young tasting for a 13-year-old CdP. Tons of buttery oak on the nose at first, followed up by coffee, chocolate, meat, thorn bush, plum, dark cherry, pepper and a distinct mintiness, all unfolding one after another. Lovely nose, but the palate did not quite match up. Dense, almost a little jammy, with licorice and spice dominating. It had great concentration, but I felt that the fruit was a little locked up, hidden under all that dense licorice flavour. I would probably have preferred a bit more freshness as well. There are still loads of mouth-coating tannins, and this wine certainly has very good stuffing - I think it could really do with even more bottle age and good long decant. It should shine after that.  Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/7/2008 & rated 91 points: Château La Nerthe Cuvée des Cadettes 1995 - 2003 (Rheingau Gourmet & Wine Festival Hattenheim, Germany): Classic style, completely intact, farmyardy, a bit on the dry side, lovely intensity and length. (2092 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 1/22/2008 & rated 94 points: Seattle Round 2: Rhone vs. Rhone Ranger (Seattle, WA): This has a gorgeous nose with lots of cherry, plum, leather, fur, sweat, and yes, even a little bit if poo. Complex nose that is the best part of this wine. The palate is medium weight and rustic. Typical of the '95 vintage. The tannins have softened a little bit but they are still firm and angular. Good acidity with some dark fruits on the finish. (3669 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 12/5/2007 & rated 92 points: Lovely, slightly mature color. Loamy, mineral nose, with a touch of soy sauce and barnyard funk. Palate shows pepper, dark fruit, good balance, with acidity that made for a nice pairing with pizza. Sweet, almost caramelized, fruity finish. Quite a pleasant aged Rhone. Probably in a prime drinking window right now. (2872 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 10/19/2007 & rated 92 points: This wine is still a monster. The Mourvedre in this wine gives it a strong earthy element with very firm tannins. This wine will benefit from a few more years in the cellar. (2888 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 2/17/2007 flawed bottle: Slight cork taint made this unpleasant. Tannins are a bit firm. Try again later in 2007. (2469 views)
Tasted by kris.h on 1/20/2007 & rated 95 points: The color is a brilliant, dark ruby red. The nose has moderate intensity, is complex and interesting. I pick up hints of black cherry, raspberry, leather, and black berry. The palate is medium weight and well structured. The tannins are smooth and the acidity is lively. The finish is spicy with some garrigue. Seamless and smooth. Long, clean, and persistent. Maybe it is the food or company but I am really digging this wine. 50 + 5 + 13 + 18 + 9 (3295 views)
Tasted by beaunehead on 1/18/2003 & rated 92 points: From magnum, on train from Paris to Nimes, France.
Blackberry and spicy leather notes on the aroma, slightly earthy. Lovely, soft plum and toasty black fruit. The finish is gentle and long, with good grip and high acidity. (3090 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
