Tasted by Mbad77 on 1/6/2024 & rated 92 points: This is fantastic and exceeds expectations- blind I would guess at a 2008 - 10 Italian super Tuscan
Dark and deep in colour but profile.
Better than expected (183 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Blind. Bordeaux style, not as ripe, good density. 91 (334 views)
Tasted by bjwca on 5/4/2018 & rated 94 points: Old wine flavor, light brown in color, slight tart cherry flavor. Wonderful drinking wine. (1601 views)
Tasted by aChave on 10/7/2015 & rated 90 points: Strong blackcurrent aroma. Pronounced back-end structure and tannins but has very good acidity which gives it a racy quality. This is not a fruit monster, but instead has an elegance to it that implies further ageability. Very good. (4725 views)
Tasted by preka99 on 2/23/2015 & rated 89 points: Flat, fruit is gone. Tannin is still there (5172 views)
Tasted by normanfekrat on 3/12/2013 & rated 91 points: Time to drink up.. deep purple and tannin based. Very woody/leathery but still kept it aroma and taste over 24 hours. (6502 views)
Tasted by Tony Poli on 11/20/2012 & rated 89 points: Just a little brown at the edges, showing some age. Fruit had faded somewhat, and the tannins dominated a bit on the palate. Good wine, but consistent with the vintage. I've had better Stag's Leap offerings. (6594 views)
Tasted by Philthebum on 12/10/2011 & rated 92 points: Appearance- reddish purple with faded edges Nose- dust, berry. Taste - upfront dust fading to cherry cough drop, long astringent complex finish. Showing much nicer 4 + hrs decanting. (6873 views)
Tasted by rfras on 10/29/2011 & rated 90 points: Surprisingly good for an off vintage. Not overwhelming but well integrated fruit flavors that finish smoothly. (3821 views)
Tasted by RussK on 9/10/2011 & rated 90 points: RUSSK WSW @ Primavera CabsBB. 90- (3738 views)
Tasted by bert75 on 9/2/2011 & rated 91 points: Spice and oak on the nose. Nothing overwhelming or overpowering but still drinking well. Pleasantly surprised and my ratings keep going up... (1878 views)
Tasted by bert75 on 7/24/2011 & rated 89 points: This bottle was better than the prior. Showed some complexity and smoothness without the burnt dryness of my prior tastings. (1830 views)
Tasted by bert75 on 6/25/2011 & rated 87 points: I thought this was a bit flabby. Drink it up because it doesn't have much life left. (1957 views)
Tasted by TheSouthernDandy on 6/3/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted. Still bright in color with little/no bricking on the edge. Medium body and somewhat soft, this still had quite a bit going on and tasted younger than I would've guessed. Very good (1986 views)
Tasted by BillB656 on 9/19/2010: No redeeming qualities. Flabby, one dimensional, cedary, black current-fest. (3118 views)
Tasted by ecwingen on 9/6/2010 & rated 93 points: Almost more of a Bordeaux profile than California cab. Understated fruit, lovely texture, lingering finish. Nice balance. Not a dominating wine, but deeply satisfying. (2991 views)
Tasted by closetcook on 6/26/2010 & rated 90 points: Not past its prime, a great bottle. (3029 views)
Tasted by tapngrill on 4/10/2010 & rated 86 points: Not what I expected. Vegetative aromas and flavor of straw. A strange, dry aroma. Not corked, no flaws, just very unusual. (3415 views)
Tasted by oski on 12/26/2007 & rated 90 points: Had this with a 1996 fay from the same winery. Smooth and supple with well integrated tannins. Good amount of cedar and fruit, very enjoyable. (4103 views)
Tasted by evanb on 11/24/2007: may have been a little past it's prime...very strong tannins. (4274 views)
Tasted by rdma on 11/11/2007 & rated 90 points: Smooth, a bit sweet black cherry and currant. Opens nicely after an hour of decanting. Good, but I'm not sure it's worth the $46 we paid. (4184 views)
Tasted by ml on 7/15/2007: Better than I had expected. Very nice flavor/texture. Perhaps a little tannic, but not badly so. Not a huge finish, but reasonable. (4596 views)
Tasted by Todd French on 2/1/2007 & rated 88 points: On the nose, there is faint plum but mostly leather and olive oil. Same for the palate, which, while the body is pleasant with smoothed tannins, tastes mostly of olive, even at the finish. Some dark fruit, a bit of apple, some butter (that's an odd one), and a touch of astringency. It still has the pleasantness of an aged cabernet, lacking in the harshness of young cabs, but doesn't have much fruit. The finish is long, but what lingers is mostly, again, the olive oil. It's not offensive, just not my cup of tea. (4624 views)
Tasted by jmacky614 on 4/9/2005: Didn't hate it, didn't love it... too earthy for me. Felt like I should've been drinking it deep in the forest (5602 views)
Tasted by R2-D2 on 12/17/2003 & rated 90 points: Napa nose of cherry, bubblegum and cassis. Minerally and kinda simple, but lots of cherry and espresso notes. (396 views)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Producer website
NOTE: This is easily confused with Stags' Leap Winery, but Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is a different winery. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is considered one of Napa Valley's first-growths. "We were founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and are best known for our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons — CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, our wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown." Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was known only in the Napa Valley until the now-famous 1976 Paris Tasting, when Winiarski's 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, the first wine produced at the new winery, bested four top-ranked Bordeaux entries, including first-growths Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion. The tasting landed Stag's Leap Wine Cellars squarely among the ranks of the world's most noteworthy Cabernet producers and placed Winiarski among the ranks of world's most respected winemakers. It also fundamentally transformed how Californian wines were viewed worldwide [StagsLeap See details here].

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
