Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by morv on 6/16/2023 & rated 87 points: Day 1: 96PP, 93+CT - Quite good ratings made me curious. Colour is bright golden and looks a bit older than expected. Nose is filled with lemon oil, minerals and overall an austere freshness. I found the nose not inviting. Palate is full bodied, nicely structured but with a punching distorted acidity. Finish is salivating and long, but again austere and harsh.

I thought at one point this might have some kind of flaw, bit following the notes here, the wine is correct and just overly steely, austrere and acidic. For me I miss balance, energy and tension. It seems flabby and uncontrolled. I will follow this wine for several days to see how it develops.

Day 2: Long aeration has helped this wine and originated more stone fruit flavors and lost some harshness. Still, this wine remains a mystery to me and is subjectivel disjointed. (657 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 8/6/2022 & rated 94 points: Medium golden color, looks medium aged. Really nice aromatics of lemon oil, steel, minerality, also some flowery notes and again tons of steely/slatey minerality, also some spices . It‘s pretty full-bodied, powerful, but with almost bracing high acidity cutting through everything and adding electrifying tension. Very good length. A very good Doosberg and a pretty good price in the context of GG. (94+) (1324 views)
Tasted by Caruso on 4/1/2022 & rated 94 points: Golden. Quite intense nose of peaches, pineapples, minerals, pomelo and a touch of vanilla. On the palate showing great balance with enough fruit to balance the high acidity. 5/12/17/10. - 2030+ if stored under perfect conditions since release. (1090 views)
Tasted by pavel_p on 12/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Am trying hard to love Riesling GG and keep exploring different producers and vintages but I merely like it. Whether its this Kuehn, the expensive Keller, Wittmann, von Winning Forster etc in Germany, or a FX Pichler and Hirtzberger in Wachau/Austria, all those wines are for me firmly planted in the lower 90s score range. The only truly remarkable bottle of dry Riesling I have had was a bottle of Hermannshoehle from Doenhoff with remarkable minerality some time ago but then I had other bottles that were merely nice. The sweeter Kabinetts or even the Spaetlese/Auslese are great of course but I struggle to drink more than a glass or two given the sweetness.
This Kuehn has a fairly evolved light golden color, looks like at least 10-15 years old based on color alone. The usual faint petrol nose, on the palate loads of citrus and acidity, much fresher than the recently tasted 2014 vintage of the same wine but otherwise fairly simple and foursquare in my eyes, good length as the acidity and citrus linger for quite some time on your tongue.
Overall good fresh white but for me miles away in terms of complexity and minerality from a top Chardonnay from Burgundy or Downunder (Kumeu, Heytesbury etc). But that is just my personal view. Rating at a rather generous 92 points here, would take a humble St. Aubin 1er Cru from PYCM anytime over this wine and any of those GG peers. (1378 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 2/7/2020 & rated 93 points: Citrus, lemon peel, apricot, marzipan, so floral, chalky, nice melt on the palate, makes you salivate. Confirms my prior positive experience. Lovely and I am looking forward to trying this again in 5-10 years, it might become a true belter with time. (2254 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 10/5/2019 & rated 94 points: Tremendous nose with peaches, a mix of tropical fruits, some orange zest and a whiff of chalky minerality. The wine is still quite young with an immense depth and structure. It will be exciting to see how it will age over the next years, where it could become a truly great Wine. Looking at the world of wine right now, this is quite a steal for the quality it delivers. (1715 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 4/6/2019 & rated 93 points: Medium golden color, looks more aged than it is. Also the nose is showing some surprising notes of petrol (at this young age), but also vibrant aromatics of lemon oil, steel, minerality, also some flowery notes and again tons of steely/slatey minerality, also some kumquat. After a few minutes, the slightly advanced notes blow off and there is more complexity coming through. It‘s pretty full-bodied, powerful, but with almost bracing high acidity cutting through everything and adding electrifying tension. Very good length, finishes with a touch of warmth. A very good Doosberg and a pretty good price in the context of GG. (93+) (2153 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 3/17/2019 & rated 93 points: I like this site as had very good experience with Querbachs Doosberg. Shows its individuality coming from spontaneous fermentation this is outright delicious and walks the line of being racy/mineral but still generous. Great Riesling! (1694 views)
Tasted by "Rhône Rider" on 3/14/2018 & rated 94 points: Dyp lekker nese. Mlitt lukket. Syltet sitrus, stein, krydder. Detaljert. Litt petro. Herlig syre og munn følelse. Lang og lineær. 94 (15-20 years) fantastisk vin! (1587 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 2/5/2018: Tour VDP.GROSSE LAGE 2018 Vol.2 (Hotel Atlantic, Hamburg): Way too young, but indicating all you want from a great Riesling dry, full of energy, only light to midbodied, stonelicking rules, long+ aftertaste with long life ahead, *(***-?), 92- 93+ potential (1706 views)
Tasted by Vinophil2000 on 11/27/2017 & rated 93 points: 2x probiert, leider zu warm :(
Sehr konzentriert, sehr langer Nachhall. Gute Reife. Jedoch kein UTA, kein Wassermangel.
92-93+ (1333 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 9/11/2017: Tour VDP Große Lage -Start Berlin- Alternative: an Afternoon in Riesling-Heaven (Capital representative office of german telecom, Berlin): PJK is releasing his GGs with a further one year maturing to the market, a very tasty palate, firm structure, pineapple with some saline hints, still a little restrained, very long finish, needs time, **(**- ?) #2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Rheingau

VDP Rheingau (Official site) | The Rheingau (Wines of Germany) | Wikipedia about The Rheingau
On weinlagen.info

The small but fine wine-growing area Rheingau offers one for the culture of the vine ideal microclimate and best soil conditions. The Rhine runs uninterruptedly almost one thousand kilometres from Basel up to its muzzle into the North Sea, in a northerly direction. With a short exception - the Rheingau. The Rheingau mountains force the river to a change in direction here. The vineyards falling in this region to the south stretch really to the sun. The king of the white wines, the Riesling, finds ideal local conditions for the unfolding of his fine fruity and elegant type of vine character on the multilayered weathering grounds with loess, loam and sand additions.
