  • Day 1: 96PP, 93+CT - Quite good ratings made me curious. Colour is bright golden and looks a bit older than expected. Nose is filled with lemon oil, minerals and overall an austere freshness. I found the nose not inviting. Palate is full bodied, nicely structured but with a punching distorted acidity. Finish is salivating and long, but again austere and harsh.

I thought at one point this might have some kind of flaw, bit following the notes here, the wine is correct and just overly steely, austrere and acidic. For me I miss balance, energy and tension. It seems flabby and uncontrolled. I will follow this wine for several days to see how it develops.

Day 2: Long aeration has helped this wine and originated more stone fruit flavors and lost some harshness. Still, this wine remains a mystery to me and is subjectivel disjointed.

  • Medium golden color, looks medium aged. Really nice aromatics of lemon oil, steel, minerality, also some flowery notes and again tons of steely/slatey minerality, also some spices . It‘s pretty full-bodied, powerful, but with almost bracing high acidity cutting through everything and adding electrifying tension. Very good length. A very good Doosberg and a pretty good price in the context of GG. (94+)

  • Golden. Quite intense nose of peaches, pineapples, minerals, pomelo and a touch of vanilla. On the palate showing great balance with enough fruit to balance the high acidity. 5/12/17/10. - 2030+ if stored under perfect conditions since release.

  • Am trying hard to love Riesling GG and keep exploring different producers and vintages but I merely like it. Whether its this Kuehn, the expensive Keller, Wittmann, von Winning Forster etc in Germany, or a FX Pichler and Hirtzberger in Wachau/Austria, all those wines are for me firmly planted in the lower 90s score range. The only truly remarkable bottle of dry Riesling I have had was a bottle of Hermannshoehle from Doenhoff with remarkable minerality some time ago but then I had other bottles that were merely nice. The sweeter Kabinetts or even the Spaetlese/Auslese are great of course but I struggle to drink more than a glass or two given the sweetness.
This Kuehn has a fairly evolved light golden color, looks like at least 10-15 years old based on color alone. The usual faint petrol nose, on the palate loads of citrus and acidity, much fresher than the recently tasted 2014 vintage of the same wine but otherwise fairly simple and foursquare in my eyes, good length as the acidity and citrus linger for quite some time on your tongue.
Overall good fresh white but for me miles away in terms of complexity and minerality from a top Chardonnay from Burgundy or Downunder (Kumeu, Heytesbury etc). But that is just my personal view. Rating at a rather generous 92 points here, would take a humble St. Aubin 1er Cru from PYCM anytime over this wine and any of those GG peers.

  • Citrus, lemon peel, apricot, marzipan, so floral, chalky, nice melt on the palate, makes you salivate. Confirms my prior positive experience. Lovely and I am looking forward to trying this again in 5-10 years, it might become a true belter with time.
