Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.1 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by OneForTheStairs on 7/8/2022: On the sweet side, very full and fresh with tropical flavours of pineapple and lychee. More reminiscent of a Barsac than i was expecting. We had it with a spicy soup but if i had another bottle and i'd serve it with a soft blue cheese, or pudding. (450 views)
Tasted by Tauro on 3/25/2020 & rated 90 points: As soon as you open the bottle you get a hit of lychees along with the floral aromas.
On the palate, hints of lychees, apple and flowers.
Not as sweet as expected, the lime and pear flavours get there in the end.
Decent QPR.

Tasted by Sljks44 on 1/4/2019: Lightly sweet but very floral with typical lychee notes. (1275 views)
Tasted by Hilzi on 12/10/2017 & rated 91 points: Typical Alsatian Gewürztraminer, big, bold, noticeable sweetness, but nicely balanced. All sorts of spices, lychee, honey. What a pleasure to have with a Foie Gras. (1910 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 3/24/2017 & rated 85 points: Typical Gewürztraminer aromas, with roses, spices etc. Round, opulent and polished. Low in acidity. Well made, without edges. (2367 views)
Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 10/15/2016 & rated 89 points: From a half bottle.
Pale straw colour.
Nicely aromatic nose - not overblown, and more lychee than rose. A much lighter press than I'd normally associate with Hugel.
A lovely wine, with good balance. It's clearly gewurz, but in a light, fresh, aromatic style.
Great with mackerel & devilled crab, and with a pork beignet served with foie gras. (2297 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 7/9/2016 & rated 89 points: Wonderful clean, floral white -- great with higher-end Mexican (sauteed shrimp, chicken tinga etc)... (2257 views)
Tasted by ilcalmo on 7/6/2016 & rated 87 points: A typical gewurz but mildly disappointing given the producer. All the elements are there: stone fruit, spice, floral notes. The wine also has a nice oily texture, and it went great with the Thai food I had it with. However, there was a lack of definition and acidity to the wine, perhaps due to the 14% alcohol I also suspect contributes to the wine's texture. The sweetness, which worked for me because of the food pairing, was not quite balanced, either. Enjoyable enough, but this strikes me as an off year. (1871 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 10/22/2015 & rated 85 points: The 2013 vintage is much better than the 2012. the 2012 is kind of strange to me. Nothing fits together like it should be. (1795 views)
Tasted by Adrian Chmielarz on 10/10/2015 & rated 75 points: Artificial taste, and otherwise entirely forgettable. FWIW, my wife liked it, and I do like other Hugel wines myself. (764 views)
Tasted by cato03 on 9/23/2015: Classic gewurtztraminer. Small taste. (671 views)
Tasted by AudunG on 7/22/2015 & rated 84 points: Lovely aromas of flowers and spices. No alcohol aromas. Relatively elegant mouth feeling with the typical fatness and low acidity of this grape. Liquorice in the finish. (830 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 7/19/2015: Dan brought this wine to the family reunion on Lake Michigan last week. One of my favourites of all the white wines we drank (and we drank quite a few, almost all rated 90 or above). I haven't had a Hugel in years. Forgot what I was missing! Rich flavour. Paired well with food. I drank it before dinner, with appetizers. (1520 views)
Tasted by osailhan on 6/26/2015 & rated 88 points: Un gewurztraminer classique avec son caractère fruité typique mais sans tomber dans la caricature. Voici l'expertise de la maison Hugel ! (1331 views)
Tasted by "Rhône Rider" on 6/10/2015 & rated 75 points: Terrible. Total alco stung. (1296 views)
Tasted by chatters on 2/11/2015: Prince - Hugel tasting (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): Pronounced intensity aromas of rose water, lychee, slight ginger notes. More of the same on the palate, spicy as well it gets a touch bitter on the back of palate…then the rose petal quality carries on the long finish. Broad and plentiful gum grip. Nice. (1862 views)
Tasted by Vintomas on 1/27/2014 & rated 87 points: The Alsace Wine Day 2014 (Operaterrassen, Stockholm): Nose with lychee, rose petal, and apple – a distinct nose but discrete for a Gewürztraminer. Dry but not bone dry on the palate, good concentration, apple, discrete spice notes, some mineral, good acidity for a Gewürztraminer. 87 p. (1983 views)

Citation from a comment by John H. Trombley on Hugel wines labeled "Grossi Laüi":

These wines come from lieu-dit(s) located within [a] Grand Cru vineyard(s), but were not labeled with their respective vineyard names (a requirement for Alsace Grand Cru AOC.) As a matter of fact, this seems to have been deliberately avoided, purportedly for reasons given below.

IT MUST BE EMPHASIZED THAT NOT EVERY WINE MADE IN A GRAND CRU VINEYARD IS ENTITLED TO THE AOC ALSACE GRAND CRU BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER REQUIREMENTS, NOT LEAST YIELD AND permitted VARIETIES.

NOTE THAT what is claimed by Robert Parker as an Alsatian-dialect trivalent for the Burgundian 'Grand Cru' or the German 'Grosses Gwächs', that is, Grossi Laüi, seems to have no official standing in the wine law that I could find as of this date. The Hugels are knows to be among a handful of powerful estates who, for various reasons, have strongly resisted participation in the Alsace Grand Cru system, and its efforts at promoting a separate system probably should be seen as self-promotional, in the view of some. In 2017, those resisters were beginning to work with the system, and it is expected that this will influence the labeling identity of subsequent vintages. I expect this may cause some confusion as to wine identities.

In Cellar Tracker, it is strongly suggested that wines not be listed as Grand Cru unless the maker has chosen to make that label claim, and is prepared to defend it to the Appellation authorities. However, exceptions may arise, and will undoubtedly be structured into the CT infomatics.
