90- (1016 views)
Tasted by wdlohr on 9/6/2021 & rated 91 points: nice drinking wine with character and body, herbal cedar, lingering but integrated finish, soft blend (918 views)
Tasted by MS86 on 6/5/2021 & rated 91 points: This is a big Rhone blend that needs at least 5 more years in bottle. Very primary, almost jammy, and yet astringent and hot. Deep almandine in the glass.

Bold nose with a dominant smoked paprika note, heavy oak influence in the form of leather and chocolate as well as ripe plum and blackberry.

Heavy on the palate with firm, bitter tannins, powerful acidity and spicy, burning alcohol.

Flavours are quite sweet with clove, black licorice and sweet black fruit.

Long, hot finish.

Tasted by Sfrye on 3/25/2021 & rated 91 points: A very good fruit forward red. Good bit of complexity to round out juiciness. Just what I would expect from Australia. Very enjoyable! (1268 views)
Tasted by Jackstraw212 on 6/13/2020 & rated 92 points: Tobacco, currants, granite, black pepper, and violets. Soft tannins, ready to drink over the next year. (1477 views)
Tasted by Brothers in Quarantine on 4/26/2020 & rated 89 points: Interesting Australian version of Rhône blend. (1224 views)
Tasted by daveyk39 on 4/23/2020 & rated 88 points: COVID-19 "Shelter-in-Place"; 3/17/2020-5/31/2020 (Redwood City, CA): Medium-dark purple color. Plum, leather, blackberry, mushroom, eucalyptus. Creamy texture, medium-full body. Fruit-driven, pleasant. (1619 views)
Tasted by Benj on 3/17/2020 & rated 90 points: This has a lovely nose with an absolute ton of garrigue, bright red fruit and gentle oak spice. Brine note (not quite olive, but similar) grows to a peak an hour after opening. On the palate it is beautifully bright and very savory, herbal, medium-high acid, medium tannin, slightly leathery, slightly dusty. Well balanced, chewy yet light, just a real pleasure. Picked up for a steal at $22. 14.5% (1236 views)
Tasted by mkribar on 2/8/2020 & rated 90 points: On the nose, raspberry, white pepper, light herb/garrigue. Elegant. I know (from the back of the bottle) that this is 52% shiraz, but it smells more like a grenache blend to me.

On the palate, medium plus body, medium minus tannin, and only medium acidity. If this had a bit more acidity, I think it would be truly excellent. As it stands, more reddish dark fruit, more pepper, and a hint of syrah umami. Good stuff. (1193 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 1/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Ripe raspberry, garrigue, violets, dried plum, white pepper and rich earth. A plush, full body, with elegance and a medium finish. Grainy tannins and an open personality. Drink now - 2030. (1220 views)
Tasted by JerM on 11/29/2017: Tasting at Artisans of Barossa (Vine Vale): rich, complex, tall structure, supple tannin, juicy red fruit, textured, dark graphite. (901 views)
Tasted by AnonymousCoward on 11/28/2017 & rated 91 points: There’s loads of dark berries, some white pepper, floral notes, and some oaky smoke spice on the nose. The palate has smooth tannins, with a good acid line. Finish is sumptuous and long. This is still very young, but has plenty of potential ahead of it. Nicely balanced blend of SGM. (1170 views)
Tasted by Seagr112 on 6/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and spice. Smooth finish, subtle tannin. (1177 views)

John Duval Wines

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

John Duval began his self-titled label in 2003. Duval graduated from Adelaide University in 1973 with a degree in agriculture and winemaking before becoming a winemaker for Penfolds for the next 29 years.
Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and was lucky enough to oversee one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. He received Winemaker of the Year at
the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and saw the 1990 Penfolds Grange
named Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995. Duval focuses on fruit from older vines in Barossa, including Rhone varietals, leading to one of his stellar ones, "Plexus."

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
