(458 views) | | Tasted by sbern on 7/4/2023 & rated 91 points: Really good, smooth, drinking well at this time (706 views) | | Tasted by Sanlucar on 9/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Spicy! Mourvedre and Shiraz are taking over and pushing the Grenache into the background. Black cherry and blackberry with lots of smoke & oak and a boysenberry finish. Leaning a bit to the acidic side but still balanced and full of big fruit flavors. I'm a fan of dark French roast coffee, so that's probably why I like this wine as much as I do. Its nearing the end of its life, so drink it all now. (1147 views) | | Tasted by Torcal d on 3/19/2022 & rated 85 points: Curo bastante bien integrado que da paso a fruta negra madura, más en boca que en nariz. Interesante. (1214 views) | | Tasted by richshoes on 2/22/2022 & rated 93 points: Really nice the second time around, tasted less Australian in a good way...firmer more flavorful fruit, nice rounded structure (1201 views) | | Tasted by richshoes on 12/3/2021 & rated 91 points: Excellent layered playful structure...realizing more and more I don't like Australian wines...a little too austere and flabby for me on the flavor profile...gets better with air and dark fruit starts to open up more...great value for the price (1440 views) | | Tasted by Scottwhipp on 10/26/2021 & rated 90 points: Nice red berry (black raspberry, red currant) and plum fruit on the front palate, brambly blackberry with a hint of spice on the back palate. Juicy finish with soft tannins. Definitely leans towards the juicy side. I don’t see this as a wine to age/cellar due to fruit and low tannin structure. Drink now and enjoy it for what it is... (1290 views) | | Tasted by smenzies on 7/9/2021: See note 2018 vintage .. will try not to decant next (1161 views) | | Tasted by Frenchrose on 6/30/2021: I think it is worth $36 (965 views) | | Tasted by smenzies on 5/26/2021 & rated 88 points: Decanted 1hr and drank over the next 2hrs. Best at 2hrs post decant but this is disappointing given WS accolades. After the 2hr mark it gradually becomes a bit non-complexed fruit driven. They believe this will go well into the next decade .. and it will need to do something I just don't see. But fingers crossed. Don't touch for another couple of years...and pray WS is correct on this one. (937 views) | | Tasted by Tige on 2/27/2021 & rated 87 points: Longueur moy, tanins souples, un peu de fruits, un peu d'épices. Bon GSM d'Australie mais assez générique. Intéressant à goûter mais trop cher. (977 views) | | Tasted by Winokdub on 2/21/2021 & rated 90 points: A bit tight still but overall very pleasant and likely to be even better years ahead. We did not decant and that would probably help also. Great quality for the price. (615 views) | | Tasted by flydcjets on 2/21/2021 & rated 90 points: Once warmed up this Very berry was so elegant with sweet tooth tonight, a wonderful floral bouquet. Cheers! (797 views) | | Tasted by red freddy on 12/17/2020 & rated 89 points: Given to me by a wine-friend to taste. Australian; 51% Shiraz; 32% Grenache & 17% Mourvèdre (14.0% abv). Served at room temperature with Braised Short Ribs. Also taste compared with a bottle of 2019 Belle Roche (Languedoc) Cabernet Sauvignon I had just opened. Dark red on the Pour with a nose of dark red berries. Red fruit and blackberry on the palate with a hint of Licorice. Subdued tannins and nice acid with a pleasant, medium finish. Paired well with the beef short ribs. Quite similar to the Belle Roche Cab (88 pts), which gave the impression of a little more sweetness on the palate.
This is a very nice wine from Barossa that I liked but I'm not sure I'll buy more at this price point. (765 views) | | Tasted by WineGuyFL on 7/3/2020 & rated 91 points: Disappointing in light of the Pro ratings and price. Maybe it needs to sit for a while. I will update if it improves over the evening. (1686 views) | | Tasted by kostaslonis on 1/21/2020: Australia Trade Tasting (London): The wine is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre, 14%. The wine shows density, spicy oak, ripe fruit, easy to drink (746 views) | | Tasted by chatters on 7/13/2019: Barossa be consumed (Carriageworks, Redfern): Wood glue, biscuit, baked fruit, red, blackberry. Clean, fresh, fruit present but drops quickly leaving silky tannins in its wake (1518 views) | | Only displaying the 25 most recent notes - click to see all notes for this wine... |

John Duval began his self-titled label in 2003. Duval graduated from Adelaide University in 1973 with a degree in agriculture and winemaking before becoming a winemaker for Penfolds for the next 29 years. Duval was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and was lucky enough to oversee one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. He received Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and saw the 1990 Penfolds Grange named Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995. Duval focuses on fruit from older vines in Barossa, including Rhone varietals, leading to one of his stellar ones, "Plexus."Red Rhone Blend Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.
A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
