| Community Tasting Notes (average 85 pts. and median of 86 pts. in 10 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Lilja on 1/18/2016: Generous nose with toasted oak, black pepper, earth, unripe red berries, a touch of smoke and some green stalks. There is a bit of development in the form of vegetable stew and dried fruitiness.
Very dry with a medium+ acidity, medium(-) body, medium intensity and medium tannins.
The fairly light colour and the toasted oak had me guessing Burgundy. Even though this is missing the filling and comes of as unpolished I quite enjoyed it. (3665 views) | | Tasted by gph on 5/19/2012: Still smells good but very reticent on the palate when first opened and very sharp. I thought I'd waited too long on this last bottle. As it warmed up, it opened up and brought back the raspberry and blackberry flavors ending with meat, leather, and pepper. Too bad I have no more. (3786 views) | | Tasted by MatsRahm on 2/10/2012 & rated 86 points: Drinking window says this should be old but that was not right. I don't think it will get any better but still very good to drink. (4266 views) | | Tasted by beatles on 8/21/2010 & rated 87 points: very nice and straight forward syrah wine , old world style with scidity and animalistic tones. Good balance Nice to drink a bit cool, the essence of a country wine, it will keep, but no reason to wait. (4798 views) | | Tasted by MatsRahm on 9/11/2009 & rated 86 points: Still not too old. (2765 views) | | Tasted by pawa on 7/19/2008 & rated 84 points: All what you can expect from a good Crozes. Despite the poor vintage this a good wine. No need to keep it any longer as it already shows all that it has. (2006 views) | | Tasted by VDLT Wine on 6/17/2007: Deep color. Vibrant nose showing plenty of dark fruit & a trace of Syrah character. Tastes less Syrah and more Cabernet. On the lighter side but a nice showing paired with Provencal stuffed zucchini & tuna. (345 views) | | Tasted by Northern on 9/16/2005 & rated 88 points: Quite good despite the vintage. Lovely Northern Rhône nose with lots of white pepper. Some fruit, but a bit diluted as expected. Went well with lamb + rosemary & garlic. Will look for some 2003's. (2636 views) |

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent. The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)
Regional History: Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
