Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 54 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bozekt on 4/21/2024 & rated 94 points: In a fantastic place now - jammy red fruits, plenty of savory dried herbs, and an earthy finish that’s smooth as silk. Fancy wine for pizza, but excellent together! (329 views)
Tasted by carlsport on 12/30/2023 & rated 93 points: Needed about 10 minutes in glass to settle down and then improved over the next hour. Very well integrated and drinking quite well at this point. (900 views)
Tasted by Quiller on 12/24/2023 & rated 87 points: Opened, poured and let sit about 30 min. Then: Not much on the nose, maybe some darkish fruit. Taste is reddish-darkish fruit, although low intensity and maybe a bit weak; no zin profile, particularly for Papera; no spiciness; acidity noticeable, particularly on the finish; tannins not an issue. I like zins on the young side while they still have their fruit. Aging this bottle did it no favors. Interestingly, this bottle is surprisingly similar to a 2016 Carlisle Papera I recently had. It had a similar aging problem and fairly similar profile. Aging hasn't suited either of them. (777 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 8/25/2023 & rated 87 points: P&P; Brambly red fruit, a bit of baking spice, but somewhat flat and soft. Also quite hot on the pop, which eventually blew off some. I guess I was expecting more, but this kind of reiterates my dislike of Zinfandel. Certainly well made, just not my preference in wine. (1137 views)
Tasted by jstrovel@gmail.com on 8/11/2023: My last bottle. I wish I would have saved it another 5 years. I think this wine is still evolving for the better. A very long lasting Zin. Prior notes still apply. (1135 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 8/8/2023 & rated 92 points: Delicious and loaded with deep rich fruit flavors. (1129 views)
Tasted by Quiller on 4/7/2023 & rated 86 points: Opened, poured and let sit about 1/2 hr. Then: Minimal darkish fruit on the nose. Taste also darkish fruit, but also something hard to identify (olive?) and not that appealing right on the front and it stays there through most of the glass. Soft mouthfeel, low acidity, tannins not noticeable, no spice or berry fruit. No particular zin profile. By the end of the glass (1+ hr after opening) some red fruit begins to appear, along with some acidity, but both a bit out of balance. Strange bottle, particularly for Papera. More generally, others talk about how well these can age, but not to my taste and experience. And even if they make it intact, they seem to have lost most of the qualities (wild berry, spice) that I look for in a zin. They might be something else that is interesting, nice to drink, but not what I'm looking for. (1294 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 3/18/2023 & rated 91 points: Brambly berry fruits - a little hot. Secondary notes like coffee. This has fine body and structure and appealing fruit. Paired with corned beef and cabbage though not recommended. Better on its own. (1226 views)
Tasted by wilypod on 1/10/2023 & rated 91 points: On the upward slope but delicious and refreshing now. The Block 6 of Papera Ranch has a high percentage of Carignane, which combines with the old vine Zin to produce a juicy red fruited wine (cranberry and pomegranate, with higher tone black raspberry notes) with the freshness and structure of bright acidity. Less aromatic than the 2016 Carlisle Papera but with a firmer, pronounced mouthfeel. Saving my remaining bottle for two to three years hence. (1402 views)
Tasted by Quiller on 11/26/2022 & rated 87 points: Opened, poured and quick sip: first impression is acidity and minimal fruit. Let sit about 45 min: Not much nose, maybe some darkish fruit. First taste is more red-fruitish, but way in the background; acidity is more prominent than fruit; not in balance; almost a weak/watery mouthfeel. Over the next 40 min. the acidity recedes a bit, but still is there; sweetish-reddish fruit more in evidence; some spice; interesting melange of berry/fruit flavors, although not your usual RRV zin flavors; a bit more weight, but only up to medium-; some astringency creeping in; still not in balance By the end of the glass, still some fruit, but astringency dominant on the finish. I'm a big fan of the Carlisle/Bedrock Paperas, but this one disappoints, particularly in view of the other tasting notes. (1345 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 9/3/2022 & rated 88 points: Pop and pour. Enjoyed with food (Flannery hangar steak, grilled chicken, and salad, in case you were wondering).
Dark purple color.
Nice nose of blackberries and spice. Hint of forest floor/herbal leafy notes.
Good dark fruited wine, some dusty tannins and spice notes. (1695 views)
Tasted by stokeme on 6/20/2022 & rated 93 points: What TOMLEE says & a bit more. This is one of the best Papera I’ve had. The great acidity adds & enhances the length/finish. Because the alcohol is lower there are red fruit tones adding complexity, along with a bit of Dolensek style blueberry & blue plum notes, giving it mixed berry pie complexity. It’s not just dark, it bright & vivacious. Tangy & savory, reminds of the very best structured vintages from Ridge. This will hit higher. I’ll consume my other bottle a year from now, while still zesty. Wish I had more. 1 of 2 (1713 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 5/27/2022 & rated 94 points: Purple in color. 14.% ABV. 50% Zinfandel and 40% Carignane and smattering of other varieties. Sublime nose of red and black fruits, baking spices and flowers. Full bodied with ample acidity. Structure and power in spades. Rich, lush and well balanced. Black cherry, raspberry liqueur, mulberry and pepper on the palate Tremendous length on the finish. No rush here. Best over the next 3-5 years. (1604 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 5/27/2022: Two hour decant. Previous review by TOMLEE on 5-27-22 is spot-on! Paired with grilled NY Strip Steak and the pairing was fantastic. (1677 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 3/14/2022 & rated 89 points: earthy smell and taste. Opened up after a bit. Darker fruit flavors. Not my favorite of Bedrock (1847 views)
Tasted by EMark on 2/10/2022: Quite dark deep plum color. This made me anticipate a very big full-bodied wine. However, that was not the case. It is no wimp, but I would characterize it as medium-bodied. I guess that is consistent with my experience with RRV Zins. It does have bright red fuit on the tip of the tongue. Then, very noticeable drying tannin. While I did not see this as a full-bodied wine, it does have nice rusticity which I appreciate. (1852 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 12/18/2021 & rated 92 points: Dark indigo with some burgundy.
Nose dark fruited.
Palate some herbals, nice dark fruits. Open on PnP. (158 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 11/24/2021 & rated 93 points: A beast of a wine. Starts off ungainly and over the top - a fire hose of red and black zin berry fruit, shrill acid, tannins, and alcohol hit like a punch to the face. Whoa, almost undrinkable. Fortunately, things rapidly come together with some air, and 3 hours in, it’s almost manageable, striking a fine balance, a notable accomplishment given its size. Still has searing acid that makes one pucker, with bracing clay minerals, and lovely taut pure black fruit, that pull it back from tipping into hedonism. No sensation of sweetness or oak, although it retains a bit of heat. Perhaps not something I want to drink all the time, but this is delicious. Drinkable now, but would recommend socking away for 3-5 years. (2043 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 9/3/2021 & rated 92 points: loads of red fruits. Very well balanced. Liked it more and more over several hours (2033 views)
Tasted by Neras on 8/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Transperant ruby red. Red berries on the nose. Fresh, close to piercing, but in a good way. Lots of fruit. Nice, gentle tannins. Long, pleasant taste. Wonderful, and just entering the drinking window. (2018 views)
Tasted by bergkamp10 on 6/1/2021 & rated 92 points: Reticent nose, red fruits, rose petals and hint of wood shavings. Medium bodied mouthfeel, powerful black fruits, pepper, orange rind coupled with a real sense of more to come given its structure. Fresh and well balanced, with a short and acidic finish. Agree with others that this needs time to come together. Promising, hopefully it doesn’t dry out in the cellar. (2128 views)
Tasted by Jackstraw212 on 4/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Very lively, massive red fruit, allspice, orange zest, and acidic finish. Give it another 2-3 years to start. (1906 views)
Tasted by jonphillips on 1/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Drank this too young. Nice berry flavor but still acidic and angular. (2189 views)
Tasted by jstrovel@gmail.com on 12/5/2020 & rated 90 points: This is too young for my taste. I get the dark fruits and maybe some asian spices but it needs a few more years. Pull next bottle in 2022. (1919 views)
Tasted by Eatmypixels on 10/30/2020 & rated 93 points: On just opening you could tell this was special. So many layers and fruit. 30 minutes in it is great. Time for food. Steak but in a citrus marinade. Tomatoes on the side. Under everything was arugula. Tough meal. This worked. So many good wines. No idea what to buy. Bedrock is good. Everyone I try is my new favorite. I can’t afire nor drink everything I like. This is a new one to stock up on. (2049 views)

2016 Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Papera Ranch

Though always the pinnacle of consistency, despite its cool location, the 2016 Papera Ranch Heritage seems to take the site to another level. Vibrant and expressive blue fruits combine with spice and the lovely texture and savory notes that great Carignan can bring. This is a wine of melding opposition, of size and subtlety, of freshness and ripeness, and near-term deliciousness and long-term ageability. There is not a vintage that goes by that I don’t feel deep appreciation for owner Stuart Coulson, who saved the vineyard from an ignoble ending, and Mike Officer, who introduced me to this singular block of fruit.

Bedrock Wine Co. Heritage Wine Papera Ranch

Bedrock Wine Co. has the honor to receive the diverse Block 6 from Papera Ranch vineyard, composed of about 50% old-vine Zinfandel and 40% Carignan, with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié.

2020 Papera Ranch Heritage Wine, Russian River Valley
Located at the heart of the Piner/Olivet area of Russian River Valley, Papera Ranch is one of the great crus for old vines in California thanks to the amazing work done by its owner Stuart Coulson, one of the great champions of old vines in Russian River Valley. The wines from this ranch combine the vibrant, blue-toned fruit of the Russian River Valley with the density of low-cropping old vines. Our block of the ranch, which includes eleven different varieties along with a large slug of Carignan, plays up the natural brightness of the site with the added spice and energy brought by the mixed varieties. Papera is like Dolly Parton, Rick Rubin or Quincy Jones: it just produces hit after hit after hit. $45

Papera Ranch

Papera Ranch (Formerly Carlo's Ranch) vineyard is an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard, located on the eastern side of the Laguna de Santa Rosa in the Russian River AVA, Sonoma County, California. Just a stone's throw from Carlisle Vineyard, this "grand dame" of the Russian River Valley was planted in 1934 by Charley (Carlo) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of carignane with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in late October. These old vines are head trained and dry farmed to produce high quality harvests, resulting in intensely flavorful grapes.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
