The nose gives blue fruit and a touch of plumminess, but mostly the palate is characterized by racy acidity and red fruit. You get a little bit of everything. I always sleep on the Papera, but it's grown near and dear.
Bedrock drinking windows are spot on for this one: it's just entering it now. It's a bit tight, finishes with some tannin, but is definitely open for business. Still, has some time ahead of it if you wish to wait. At PNP this frankly wasn't that enjoyable. Poured into a magnum decant and placed a ball cork to seal and back into the cellar it went.
After 48 hours and some swirling this was in a much better spot. 97 pointer, no. As other have noted there is a rhubarb component or orange peel that comes to mind. Nice acidity and more enjoyable with food.
Not sure about upside but no rush with a proper decant.
PNP 89/90
LONG decant. 91/92 (2085 views) | | Tasted by ex-sommelier on 6/3/2023: Good plummy fruit, rhubarb, touch of smoke and bitter finish. No rush but I don't see it improving much. In line with a lot of the other 2018s from Bedrock. (1309 views) | | Tasted by stokeme on 5/29/2023 & rated 89 points: Day 1 Fairly effusive fruit, but with a simple straightforward profile, medium depth, medium finish. Expected considerably more after a pre-release off the charts score. I rushed to pick up two. I could imagine a youthful piercing fruit tone, upon release, but today it’s lacking much of a package in support. Day 2 Picks up a little of Carignane’s sauvage tone, & is a touch more rounded, but has little more to offer. 1 of 2 (1147 views) | | Tasted by Quarked on 5/29/2023 & rated 94 points: This may be the best Bedrock I've had. I didn't notice the Galloni review until after I drank it, and while I find the score inflated, the rest of the review sounds just like the bottle I just had. Phenomenal, though I seem to be in a minority on this one. (1431 views) | | Tasted by josephis on 5/21/2023 & rated 90 points: Very good on day two after opening and pouring one glass. Already fading however. Drink up. (1270 views) | | Tasted by tomlee on 4/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Crimson in color. 14.6% ABV. Savory nose of red fruits, citrus and plums. Medium body with medium acidity. Rustic, Claret style field blend. Cherry, blood orange, smoke and pepper on the palate. Nice length on the finish. So clearly from the Bedrock block at Papera where Zinfandel takes a back seat to the other varieties. Somewhat underwhelming given the hype for this particular wine. Best over the next 2-3 years. (1380 views) | | Tasted by Franken Berry on 7/19/2022 & rated 92 points: I’m not sure I understand the lofty score from AG. It has nicely integrated acidity, and therefore terrific freshness with bright red fruits. Smooth, silky mouthfeel, but overall, medium in body and length, but nothing spectacular on either the bouquet or finish. Bought on release from the winery, stored in a cool room, bottle opened for 30 minutes b foe dinner. (2429 views) | | Tasted by HFLED on 9/18/2021 & rated 91 points: Had this along with a Carlisle 2018 Papera, so interesting to see the style difference.
Vs a fairly polished Carlisle, this one came off admire rustic and old school. Purple colored and fairly dark, nose was dusty, menthol, and wild dark fruits. On the palate this wine is very bramble and wild dark fruited, has a dark spicy profile, blackberry, graphite and a touch of smoke. Still pretty tannic and feels not quite opened up, though med-high acidity keeps this fairly drinkable. I drank this way too you, but give it 3-4 years and it will be quite nice.
Rated the same as the Carlisle, but ultimately think this will be the better wine. (2316 views) | | Tasted by MJP Hou TX on 6/24/2020 & rated 93 points: No formal notes. Better on day two- three. Hold. (4906 views) | | Tasted by Tubulus on 6/2/2020: My first Bedrock purchase in about 4 years and was interested to see how the style has changed as I've heard there's been a shift. The first thing to strike me is that this is delicious, like really delicious. 97 as per AG? I dunno, but it's very good. The acid is much higher than I remember on older Bedrock, and the mouthfeel is not nearly as thick/glycerine-ish as Bedrocks circa 2010-2013 ish. On night 2 the acid is even more prominent. It does not really have the brambly spicy zin thing going on, I'm not quite sure what I'd guess it as blind. Also not sure exactly how it will change with age as it's so damn drinkable now. 2020 Papera Ranch Heritage Wine, Russian River Valley Located at the heart of the Piner/Olivet area of Russian River Valley, Papera Ranch is one of the great crus for old vines in California thanks to the amazing work done by its owner Stuart Coulson, one of the great champions of old vines in Russian River Valley. The wines from this ranch combine the vibrant, blue-toned fruit of the Russian River Valley with the density of low-cropping old vines. Our block of the ranch, which includes eleven different varieties along with a large slug of Carignan, plays up the natural brightness of the site with the added spice and energy brought by the mixed varieties. Papera is like Dolly Parton, Rick Rubin or Quincy Jones: it just produces hit after hit after hit. $45 Podcast minute mark: 40:20Papera RanchPapera Ranch (Formerly Carlo's Ranch) vineyard is an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard, located on the eastern side of the Laguna de Santa Rosa in the Russian River AVA, Sonoma County, California. Just a stone's throw from Carlisle Vineyard, this "grand dame" of the Russian River Valley was planted in 1934 by Charley (Carlo) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of carignane with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in late October. These old vines are head trained and dry farmed to produce high quality harvests, resulting in intensely flavorful grapes.
Details on weinlagen-infoUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sonoma CountyMendocino CountyRussian River Valley Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia |
