Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by williamc on 7/11/2023 & rated 93 points: Immediately stunning with mesmerizing aromas of ripe peach and honey. A little melon and citrus as well. Plentiful fruit but enough verve to keep it in balance.

Really hard to put down. A touch of petrol as well. (377 views)
Tasted by puffinscellar on 3/13/2023 & rated 96 points: Scored as high as I did considering this is a friulano and just a stunning example. At first whiff it has the classic pretty, breezy honey-dipped floral and fresh stone fruit aromas, but quickly turns wild. A brooding petrol note (and I mean the in the best possible way) is reminiscent of Mosel Riesling but darker and less refined, like newly tapped oil shale. Buttered popcorn alternates with cotton candy and cream soda to tickle the inner child. The palate is fresh, vibrant, and creamy with gentle acidity (by white wine standards at least) girding honey-macerated apricot flavors, tangerine zest, and a slight bitter note of red grapefruit pith keeps everything honest. Going to have to find more of this, the most beguiling white wine I have had in a long, long time. (657 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 10/20/2022: Two Months in Roma; 9/6/2022-10/28/2022 (Rome, Italy): From the wine list at Al Moro, Rome . We had the 2015 a month ago and loved it, but I did not care for this vintage nearly as much. Rich fruited, with acidity but also a bitter peach pit note on the finish that was a bit jarring for me.  Tasted by wineappellation on 6/3/2022 & rated 93 points: Pale gold color. Alluring aromas bursting out of bottle. Ripe lime, pear, peach, quince, apricot, savoury yeast, stoney minerals, touch of honey mingling with toastiness.

It is medium to full body, rich on palate yet with sharp precision and mineral driven all the way. More complexities emerged: zesty juicy lemon, salty minerals, lees, bit of caramel too. Drinking very well now. (979 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 11/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautiful gold straw colour, medium floral nose, with hints of peach and orange, with some lime now coming through. The wine is full and round, with apricots, tropical pineapple and lime marmalade, a lively acidity. This is all perfectly balanced and complex, with a long finish of some sweet apricots and a tingle of acidity. Absolutely delicious. Drank this over a year ago and this is starting to sing and develop more complexity with age. I bought this for £65 @fineandrarewines and it is expensive but as it is maturing you can see why, well worth seeking out to try and #giveanewwineago #burgundynick 93 points (1145 views)
Tasted by Jdevans on 1/25/2021 & rated 94 points: Outstanding, and slightly odd. I wouldn't be excited by a celery and passion fruit smell normally, but here it works wonderfully well. Cut price zachys sale helped, for sure. (1228 views)
Tasted by MJR21401 on 6/27/2020 & rated 92 points: Beautiful dark straw color. What a powerful nose with primarily tropical fruits and ripe melon. Some hint of spice. Also a note of petrol very much like a Riesling in a good way. In the mouth the fruit is balanced with moderate tannins and minerality. Very little evidence of the 14% alcohol. The finish is persistent and the tannins persist assuring there is good aging potential. I am sorry I only bought this one bottle because I would love to experience how the wine might evolve in a few years. (1150 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 3/6/2020 & rated 93 points: Beautiful gold straw colour, light floral nose, with a few hints of peach and orange. The wine is quite full and round, with apricots, tropical pineapple, marmalade, a lively acidity. This is all perfectly balanced and complex, with a long finish of some sweet apricots and a tingle of acidity. Absolutely delicious. Drank this nearly a year ago and this is starting to sing. I bought this for £65 @fineandrarewines and it is expensive but as it is maturing you can see why. notched up a point from a year ago 93 points (1151 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 6/29/2019 & rated 89 points: Yellow-sheen with a light golden sheen. Pineapple rind and banana leaf on the nose. Notes of Banana peel, pineapple, guava, and faint notes of nectarine. Tasty and easy-drinking. (1394 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 6/25/2019 & rated 92 points: Slightly floral with some citrus on the nose. It tastes delicious with an initial citrus zing, that then gives way to some tropical fruit and apricots. It's got a lovely balance and weight that makes it go so well with food, mine was #panzanella it was great. Although at £65 @fineandrarewines it's very expensive when the basic wine is lots cheaper and almost as good. It's still worth seeking out and the grape Friulano is fantastic 92 points (1069 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 2/28/2019 & rated 92 points: This has a floral nose, yet it tastes of lemon, lime, some tropical fruits and apricots, amazing, but these are delicate flavours. It's got some acidity and a lovely finish. It's expensive, £65 and the normal offering is a superb wine. I think this needs a few years, glad I have 5 left so I can see how it develops to see whether this actually becomes outstanding and then it would be worth it. It's still delicious 92 points (983 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 2/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Opened by Mark. 95% Friulano and 5% Riesling from 52 year old vines. This is the top wine made by this estate which began making it in the 2015 vintage. It sells for about $70. Paired with a burrato, prosciutto and spinach first course. Straw color. Fuller body. Notes of lemon curd and minerals. An elegant wine. Very nice but I didn't see the 98 points that James Suckling gave it. 92 points. (1266 views)

It would be difficult to speak about top quality wine from Italy and not include Mario Schiopetto in that conversation. He is widely considered one of the founding fathers of Italian white wine and a true pioneer. His early wines helped to change perceptions of Italian white wine, forever. Mario was also responsible for introducing many modern winemaking techniques to Italy, both in the vineyard and in the wine cellar.

Towards the end of his tenure, Mario passed the reins of his property over to his children, who worked hard to continue their father's hard work and uphold his legend. The estate is now in the capable hands of the Rotolo family who have also done a fantastic job of keeping Mario's philosophy alive to this day. This is an approach born out of an unwavering desire to let his vineyards speak for themselves - to give them a voice, so to speak. [Good Pair Days]

Friulano

Friulano (formerly Tocai Friulano, and also known as Sauvignonasse) is a grape variety most famous for its role in the white wines of Friuli, northeastern Italy.
These wines, usually varietal, are lively and fruit-driven with notes of citrus and almond, and often a touch of minerality. The grape is thought to be native to
South West France, where it is known as Sauvignonasse or Sauvignon Vert. However, it has moved on from its home and into northeastern Italy, where it has
quickly become one of the region's most classic styles. Mentions of wines called "Tocai" date back hundreds of years here, but as always, it is not clear exactly
what grape variety this refers to. Many local winemakers believe it to be Tocai Friulano.
