Community Tasting Notes (average 93.7 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bryanb2002 on 3/16/2024 & rated 92 points: Better than the 2013, 2014, and 2015 but I really did not see the structure that some did. It is not a fruit bomb but I just don't think its memorable either. It is a lighter body wine with a mix of fruit and earthy notes, but I did not think it had the depth and structure to hold it all together. (247 views)
Tasted by Philip67 on 11/30/2022 & rated 94 points: Wow! Gorgeous. Great depth and breadth of mainly black fruits but with raspberry poking through on the finish. Big structure, well integrated and covered by the fruit. (1182 views)
Tasted by Kdad on 5/20/2022 & rated 92 points: For some reason, not as good as last year. The finish was a bit off. (1262 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 1/26/2022 & rated 93 points: Three hour decant. Deep dark ruby magenta color (more ruby than magenta). Chocolate malt, blackberry, prune, freeze dried raspberry, bay leaf, black tea, and subtle petrol on the nose. Smooth, tongue drying, modestly tart palate. Firm, full tannins on the medium long finish.

This is a bit more demure and Bordeaux-like than I would prefer. It’s elegant and well integrated, but drinks below its price point IMHO. (2266 views)
Tasted by Winning_Wines on 7/21/2020 & rated 94 points: Dark red fruit, forward nose, plums, dark cherries, and hints of a cedar box. Rich and balanced acidity with 30 sec + finish that evolves beautifully. 94-95 points. (2556 views)
Tasted by KPB on 12/19/2019 & rated 95 points: Saturated deep purple, the 2016 is quite closed right now, but shows red currents and cherries, spice cake, beeswax on a nose that evolves and shifts as you swirl the glass. The wine is plush but not at all overripe, with the fruit nicely framed by firm acidity and a long mineral support. The tannins have a lovely polish here. Excellent wine, although not cheap. Blankiet Estate

Producer website

Blankiet Estate is located on the western foothills of the Mayacamas mountain range over-looking Yountville in the Napa Valley of California. Created in 1996 by Claude and Katherine Blankiet, sixteen acres have been developed by renowned viticulturist David Abreu.

The vineyards, known as Paradise Hills, are stunningly beautiful with gorgeous views of the valley. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are planted on volcanic soil. Merlot is planted on a deep layer of alluvial clay deposited by streams draining the mountain range high above. Sustainable farming is practiced and the human hand is the connection between vines and wines. Our artisanal production is less than a thousand cases of a flagship proprietary red wine, Blankiet Estate, and a few hundred cases of a Saint Emilion inspired red wine named Rive Droite.

The first eight vintages were made by the legendary Helen Turley. Then Martha McClellan-Levy took over winemaking with the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages assisted by world famous oenologist Michel Rolland. Vinification is done in a state of the art winery right on the property. One hundred percent new French oak barrels are used for every vintage. Our wines are aged on their lees for over two years and are bottled without fining or filtration.

Robert Parker validates our terroir, stating that the wines we produce “are world class, combining the extraordinary power of the site with unbelievable elegance and definition”.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
