Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 2/11/2024 & rated 89 points: Good but showed less well than the Bouscassé Veilles Vignes 2001 drunk alongside.Expressive nose with a slight hint of balsamic, round full-bodied taste, tannins still there but in check. Good, not great. (302 views)
Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 9/17/2023 & rated 90 points: Almost 6 years since the last note; still going very strong. Eucalyptus and menthol nose mingled with black fruit. Full-bodied taste with a still tannic finish. Very fine. (442 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/1/2023 & rated 88 points: A lot of green herbs in the bouquet, toasted oak and some stable flavors. On the palate juicy dark berries and fairly mild acidity, with round but still sticky tannin. Ready now, not really impressive at this moment, so maybe…..in a few years this wine has recovered from a dull stage, but I will not put any serious money on that. (1219 views)
Tasted by petervlam@skpnet.nl on 2/1/2023 & rated 92 points: EEE 20230201 - Stevig rood; 2/1/2023-2/2/2023: Rood met bruine rand. In de neus kers, rozijn, teer, koffie, wat oxydatie, bosgrond en braam. In de mond kers, laurier, drogende tannines, bos, thee, mokka, koffie, gelaagd, power en ook wel elegantie. (1103 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 12/14/2021 & rated 87 points: Tannic, dusty and grippy it is! And that's what we should expect from Montus and Tannat. It definitely needs food and a certain amount of concentration. (2029 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 6/12/2021 & rated 92 points: A private lunch (Café De Klepel, Prinsenstraat 22, Amsterdam, NL): Mature but lively appearance; wonderful nose, leather and tobacco and eucalyptus, spices and red berries; fresh and classical palate with a firm tannic structure; quite dusty and grippy on the finish. (2709 views)
Tasted by Peter Z. on 10/27/2019 & rated 89 points: Dusty, bordeaux style (despite Tannat grapes). Needs drinking (3052 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/7/2019 & rated 89 points: Monthly tasting club LTC 2019-03 Two special sets of wines (@ DJ): Be3autiful bouquet with dark berries, plums, vanilla, earth, sweet spices and mushrooms. On the palate sweet spices, vanilla, dark berries, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Good length. Beautiful wine. (3283 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 1/16/2019: 13.5% alcohol. Very good cork with no wine penetration. Dark colour with thinning at the edge of the rim. Decanted an hour ahead, which was probably a mistake, see further.
The wine is strange in that it is still vigorous in the sense of residual tannins, yet it oxidises very fast once opened. Past its best, and not worth describing in detail.
An education for me, as I thought that those strapping tannins would protect against oxidation; obviously not so in this case. (3072 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 4/28/2018: 13.5% alcohol. Very good dense cork with no wine penetration, quite a feat after all these years. Decanted for an hour.
The colour is dark, with barely any ageing except at the edge of the rim. Good nose of wild berries. The mouth is much more rustic, which is not a problem so long as you are in the mood for it. Still, this is surprisingly un-evolved after all this time; I wonder if this predates micro-oxygenation (the technique was not invented by Rolland, you know). Maybe decant for a longer period the next time, but I fear that it is my last bottle. As it is, it has a slightly austere balance, but by no means an unpleasant one; there is fruit there, but you have to seek it out. The wine plays hard to get, but as usual it is worth the effort.
A repeat purchase if only for the uniqueness and the undeniable honesty of the winemaking. (2941 views)
Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 12/10/2017 & rated 88 points: Decanted to get rid of sediment, and straight back into the bottle. Nice nose, mature. Fairly smooth taste, finishes a bit dry. A point, Nothing more to be gained. (2824 views)
Tasted by barolo300 on 10/23/2016 & rated 89 points: Very dark in colour, with some garnet showing at edges. Nose is pronounced, with red berry fruit, kirsch but not showing much development. On the palate, alcohol outweighs the rest to begin with, but there are peppery, red berry and cooked fruit flavours. a slight bitter note, leaning towards coffee. a bit out of balance, will try with food...  Tasted by wprev on 7/27/2015 & rated 93 points: outstabding,y soft tanins, lots of herbs and dark fruit, complex and refined (3922 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 11/8/2014 & rated 94 points: Substantial improvement since the last bottle two years ago. The poo smell has gone, leaving a rich, inviting bouquet of redcurrant, dark cherry, blackcurrant, leather and yeast. The wine still tastes young, but it no longer needs decanting. Rich, massive, yet retaining considerable elegance and finesse, the blackcurrant hits first, followed by a thick seam of dark cherry and leather, then a third sensation of raspberry liqueur, before a a long, persistent finale combining all three waves. I haven't tried the 00 Prestige yet, but this is amazingly good at the price, like a top Pessac-L but four times cheaper. Wonderful. (4717 views)
Tasted by roelof.ligtmans@gmail.com on 3/16/2014 & rated 89 points: Nice, wild, becoming a bit more civilised with age. At peak, but no hurry to drink. Drink with food. (4466 views)
Tasted by uli369 on 12/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Sehr konzentriert, dunkles Rot, einiges an Satz. Urgewaltig und kräftig. Gut gealtert. (4733 views)
Tasted by Ian S on 11/9/2013: Very youthful colour with nothing betraying any age at the rim, and strong depth to the purple colour.

Interesting nose, that would have put me more towards super-Tuscan than southern France, with nice dark fruit/dark olive and a little meat stock / light dung, but with lighter/brighter red fruits giving it some lift. A very complex and pleasing nose.

More linear on the palate, with fruit to the fore, but a little more complexity on the finish. Tannins and acidity still somewhat forceful, making this more suited to appropriate food.

On this form I'd say this could improve over the next decade, perhaps beyond, but is offering good enjoyment already. (4049 views)
Tasted by uli369 on 9/28/2013 & rated 88 points: Sehr dunkel, konzentriert, kräftig. Wirklich eine Granate. Fehl allerdings etwas die Eleganz. (3243 views)
Tasted by uli369 on 4/8/2013 & rated 85 points: Sehr konzentriert, dunkles undurchdringliches Rot. Im Geschmack sehr kräftig, erdig und wild, immer noch ungestüm. Brauch eine ganze Weile Belüftung und wird dann etws zugänglicher. (3464 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 3/10/2013 & rated 94 points: Fantastic wine and consistently one of the greates values in the wine-world. Dark ruby with a garnet rim. Gorgeous nose of cedar, hot iron, nutmeg, clove, red cherry and subtle barnyard undertones. Medium to full-bodied with firm but juicy tannins, vibrant fruit, balancing acidity and a long, caressing aftertaste. Just entering its plateau, can be enjoyed now and over the next decade or even further. Excellent. (3351 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 2/17/2013 & rated 93 points: Excellent wine. I am a little surprised with fellow cellartracker's reviews. This is a fantastic wine!
Nose of medium intensity with sweet spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), cedar, bitter chocolate and a lot of red fruit still quite fresh.
Palate is medium bodied, elegant and smooth with purity of red fruit, cedar, something iodine and obvious good-quality-oak influence. Tannins are a little dusty but overall soft (microxyganation here?).
Acidity is medium but overall the wine is very balanced and rather on the soft side. Good bittersweet finish.
Flavorwise very much like a cru classe left bank Bordeaux wine with more depth of fruit and softer tannins. No funk or brett whatosever and although it shows some evolution it still has
a long life ahead of it. (3024 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 11/15/2012: I decanted this four hours in advance, just as well since my first sniff revealed a rather unappealing blend of fresh manure...which disappeared after two hours, leaving a blend of dark cherry, earth, a bit of meat and leather. In the mouth, the wine has finally unwound, to reveal a rich, deep mixture of dark cherries, redcurrants, vanilla, cigar box, earth and leather. In fact there's such an earthiness to it that it tastes quite like a Pessac-Leognan. There is a certain rusticity, but less than Bouscassé 2000, I found it very appealing and immensely satisfying. Great value. No hurry, this is just embarking on its drinking plateau, where it will stay for at least ten years if not more. (3316 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 10/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Still massively tannic & rustic. Needs food to shine. Lots of fruit flavors & earthy elements. Classic Madiran. (3101 views)
Tasted by chbeaumont on 10/21/2012 & rated 87 points: Blood red, dark; eucalyptus, farmyardy, substantial, meaty, brett; brooding, brutish tannins, rustic, flavoursome. Rugged, powerful finish. Impressive but where's the true enjoyment? Maybe worth a revisit in 10 years? (2792 views)
Tasted by uli369 on 7/15/2012 & rated 90 points: Sehr Dichte fast schwarze Farbe. Sehr intensives Bouquet und sehr konzentriert im Geschmack. Deutlich beeindruckender als die letzten Flaschen Montus. (2931 views)

Madiran

Vin de Madiran (l'ESAT de Madiran)

The Madiran appellation is where red wines were born to go with magret and confit de canard. Alain Brumont is a master of this deep, dark-fruited, powerfully grippy style, the tannins melding satisfyingly with the fat of the meat. HT:
