Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 47 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Whine-oh on 11/18/2017 & rated 91 points: Still big and bold, but mellowed appreciably. Slow ‘od x1-2 hrs. Nice Syrah profile, but age has mellowed this nicely. Tannins there, but gave wine nice backbone. In a good place and went well with the meat, a crowd pleaser tonight. Went well with grilled trip tip. Still life ahead. Drink or hold. (1920 views)
Tasted by eoremus on 7/4/2015 & rated 92 points: Surprised by how it turned out. It was a little crusty when first opened. Decanted through an aerator and waited a half hour or so and it began to open up. By the end, a couple of hours later, the nose was deep and lovely, redolent of dark fruit, and the mouth was rich with fruit and structure. A lovely surprise. (2959 views)
Tasted by ACR16719 on 2/12/2015 & rated 98 points: This is an outstanding wine. One of the best I've had.
Ruby red, full bodied, long legs, lots of nose.
Really good.
Upset I only have one left! (2944 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 11/2/2014 & rated 94 points: 18th Annual Lyon 10 Year Retrospective (Lyon Down Inn): You hope for surprises in a big blind tasting and the Californians tried their best as ringers...this was excellent! Jammy like its namesakes from OZ, but a different sort of peppered meat and black fruit jam on the palate. Really nice depth, length, and grip. No fall off on day 2. One of several I kept going back to...no rest for the spit bucket! (3939 views)
Tasted by DLeeds on 1/19/2014 & rated 93 points: lots of fruit with intense flavor. A bit strong on alcohol, but a great Shiraz. (3548 views)
Tasted by theesir on 12/28/2013 & rated 92 points: Still a lot of fruit. A bit strong on the alcohol at first but that settled out very nicely as it decanted. Really silky. A great Shiraz. (2372 views)

Tasted by bacchusrg on 4/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Inky and jammy! DECANT! (2708 views)
Tasted by TheFoodieTraveler on 8/28/2011 & rated 91 points: Still quite the fruit bomb. Big fruit, lots of layering, still has time. (3143 views)
Tasted by Stretch47 on 8/20/2011 & rated 92 points: Loved loved loved it (2642 views)
Tasted by Wink on 6/8/2011 & rated 90 points: Bottle variation? Past its prime? This is the first bottle of the '04 Darioush Shiraz that has failed to impress me as really, really excellent. Tonight it seemed a bit unbalanced with excessive ripe fruit and too much alcohol. Not flabby. Not overly oaky. Just somewhat lacking in energy, personality, and balance. I might have mistaken this for an Aussie Shiraz if tasted blind. (2650 views)
Tasted by Wink on 3/22/2011 & rated 95 points: Drank in Pensacola at Jackson's Steak House (BYOB). From memory: Dark purple. Nose of blackberry, pepper, toasty oak, and espresso. Full, ripe palate of blackberry, fig, plum, and espresso. Excellent length. Pleasant acidity. Integrated tannins. Everyone LOVED it. (2433 views)
Tasted by WineKV on 1/31/2011 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 90 minutes, enjoyed with friends, this was a full bodied, deep, dark, delicious bottle of wine, with some very serious hang time. Hints of Tobacco and Cocoa, lots of berry. This is an exceptional wine. glad I have some more bottles left (2507 views)
Tasted by Wink on 11/25/2010 & rated 95 points: Served with Thanksgiving dinner. No notes. AMAZING tonight. Big and balanced. Definitely WOTN. (2571 views)
Tasted by bcmatthias on 9/12/2010 & rated 88 points: A little too much heat at this stage. Plummy, spice. (2703 views)
Tasted by TheFoodieTraveler on 5/26/2010 & rated 94 points: fantastic. Deep, complex, powerful. Makes me remember why darioush is great (3033 views)
Tasted by Wink on 3/27/2010 & rated 94 points: Dark purple. Nose of blackberry, pepper and oak. Full ripe palate of dark fruit, spice, pepper, and espresso. Wonderful length. Mellow tannins. Integrated oak. Outstanding wine that keeps you craving that next sip. (2986 views)
Tasted by dasper on 3/19/2010 & rated 93 points: A rich (almost creamy) Syrah with few noticeable traces of tannins. The color was deep ruby red. Vanilla was the dominant spice on the nose. Not the longest finish in the world. Overall: superb. (3177 views)
Tasted by eric42 on 1/13/2010 & rated 93 points: Decanted, poured immediately, enjoyed over 4 hours.
As expected, a very full & rich wine. On the palate (blueberry, plum) it had a spicy/dusty pepperiness that lead into sort of a creamy sweetness, milk chocolate. Tannins were moderate, but the huge fruit and body of the wine masked it well. Acid was perfect. The nose had a little mint, maybe eucalyptus or tobacco, along with thyme, nutmeg, and cinnamon. It was really hard to pinpoint exactly what it was. So I stopped trying and just enjoyed the pleasant aroma!
The wine started on the heavy side and finished on the heavy side. No heat, which is rare for a big Syrah these days.
Very impressive wine, best Syrah I have had in about a year (since the Radio Couteau Timbervine).
Drink now (decanted or with food) or hold for 8-ish more years. Pretty wide drinking window on this one, it seems. (3165 views)
Tasted by Gotwine1969 on 7/29/2009 & rated 92 points: Rich and polished with less pepper than many comparable Syrah/Shiraz. Dark chocolate mixed with cherry licorice and scorched earth. Finished with a touch of Chipotle/Jalapeno. A few more years should be dynamite. (3567 views)
Tasted by dhonig on 6/3/2009: cross posted from 2 Days Per Bottle, pictures there.

Night One

Be careful not to put your nose too deeply into the glass. This wine forms a fist and punches straight up right at your schnoz. The bottle says "Alcohol 14.9% by volume." Don't believe it. Under US label laws that means the alcohol can be as high as 15.9%, and if I had a gas chromatograph in the junk drawer I would be willing to bet it will ring the 16+ bell. Lots of other big aromas are packed in that fist, including blackberries, very ripe and deeply bruised black cherries, black pepper, freshly ground nutmeg, dark chocolate and cocoa. This is one of those noses you can get caught up in, forgetting to drink the wine for quite a long time.

The palate is equally overpowering. The attack opens with huge bruised dark fruit and black pepper. A whole smorgasbord of flavors flash across the mid-palate, starting with plum skins and nutmeg, then adding dark chocolate, coffee, and a tiny grating of dried orange peel. The tannins are surprisingly gritty, but sweet, adding a cheek-drying leather to the finish, which is quite long.

Night Two should be interesting.

Night Two

I do not have detailed notes from Night Two. A friend came over and we just drank the rest of the bottle together. My general impressions were of a great big sweet woody wine, an Aussie Shiraz doppelganger. Tannins smoothed out significantly, the finish was quite long. At $40, it was okay for the price, but I was back in the same store a few days later and did not feel compelled to pick up any more of it. At the retail $69, I would not even consider buying a bottle. (3948 views)
Tasted by wino_tim on 1/21/2009 & rated 91 points: A Cabernet drinker's Shiraz, this generous offering put forth deep aromas of macerated berry alongside spice and grilled herb notes. Very nicely textured on the palate, with very fine, ripe tannins, and warm flavors of black fruit and coffee. Long and persistent on the finish. (3675 views)
Tasted by aaronwine on 9/7/2008 & rated 93 points: From half bottle pop and pour. One of the best Shiraz I've had from California. Huge concentrated wine with blackberry pie, spice and some chocolate and oak. The nose is incredibly strong. This is a very big wine and there was still some heat on the finish. (3874 views)
Tasted by panadera on 6/21/2008: powerful - heavy black fruits, chocolate, tea. (4025 views)
Tasted by smallhart on 4/26/2008 & rated 94 points: A Small Wine Tasting (Catonsville, MD): Outstanding. Chocolate with a little licorice. Very full mouth, stayed from start to finish. Nice spice. The pick of the party. (4541 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
