Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.4 pts. and median of 86 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Neecies on 4/1/2024: In a delightful place right now and a great upside surprise compared to previous bottles. Pnp'd and drunk over two-three hours. Mature Bordeaux nose of old books and bandaids with baked fruit and lightly roasted coffee beans. (87 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 8/18/2021 & rated 85 points: Finally has that good old Bordeaux smell: specifically, old wet wool and used coffee grounds with stewed black cherry compote. Color purple with brown edges. Acidity and tannins decent. It's very drinkable--not over the hill but heading there. (807 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 1/4/2020: Little buggers got away from me. Not brown but not much fruit or persistence, should have drunk them up five years ago. (967 views)
Tasted by Oenecnist on 9/7/2019: Bought a 6b case of magnums from Binny's for 30/mag 12 years ago; this is #4. Decanted with normal sediment for its age and format. Dark purple; blackcurrant nose, hint of leather, following onto the palate; good mouthfeel. Tasty with some years of life ahead, unlikely to improve. Glad I have more as a good everyday Bdx, esp. for a dinner group. One of four reds (three cab-based) shared over dinner with a small group of wine friends: this had third place among those with more experience. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this notable+ when considering quality, age, and price. (947 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 12/13/2017: Past peak. Black fruit, tobacco, lots of cocoa, lower than desired acidity, soft tannins with a somewhat chalky texture--made me want to run it through a paper coffee filter. (1270 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 12/26/2016 & rated 84 points: Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.

Decent, but not all that great entry level Bordeaux. Perhaps it was past its prime, although my experience with Bordeaux suggests otherwise, particularly out of a magnum. Opened it about 1 hour before drinking and drank over a few hours (second day of Christmas dinner). Tannins subsided over time. My major reservation was the lack of fruit or any depth. I don't want to sound all negative (84 is not a bad score). I guess I was hoping for more. (1580 views)
Tasted by Sir-Harrie on 3/8/2016 & rated 90 points: Nach wie vor steht der Wein toll da. Schöne Frabe, rund, ausbalanciert mit den typischen Noten eines Guten Reifen Bordeaux. Toll (1591 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 5/2/2015 & rated 90 points: Strong cassis on opening which gradually gets mixed with cigarbox and leather notes. Mature and well balanced between fruit, acidity and tannins. Lot of tobacco and leather on the palate. Nice finish as well. Might not get much better than now. A real positive suprise! (841 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 6/5/2014: Didn’t really mean to hold this so long, but doing fine. Cassis and black plums, pencil shavings, not complex but nice mature luncheon claret. B (2119 views)
Tasted by Capt Cutlass on 5/1/2013 & rated 85 points: Leather, barnyard and dark fruits on the nose boded well for an evolved Bordeaux blend which has sadly seen its best days. On the palate it is short and light with an inky texture. Past its prime... (2501 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 4/7/2013 & rated 88 points: On opening notes of smoke, tobacco and some cassis. Medium bodied style. Opens up after about an hour but the aromas fade after 3-4 hours. Nice soft tannins which mixes good fruit and earthyness. Pretty dry but I quite liked it. Bon rapport qualite prix. Good decent wine probably nearing its peak. (1086 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 8/29/2012: Mature, soft but not unstructured, midweight, clean black fruits. a little lead pencil. Pretty nice for $9! B+ (2506 views)
Tasted by rpontual on 5/30/2012 & rated 88 points: The wine is at a very nice age to drink, not a thrilling wine but well balanced and pretty enjoynable. Has hints of cassis both on aroma and palate. Perhaps some light hints of cedar. Nice dark red color. (2210 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 1/13/2012: Nice midweight Graves that's in a very nice place right now- cassis and black plums, a distinct tobacco note, a little cedar. Fresh acids, light ripe tannins in the background, nice, and holds well overnight. B+ (2055 views)
Tasted by markfitz on 9/1/2008: Too young, too young, too young! This developed in the bottle for a couple of hours, becoming something quite decent but tightly coiled. That cedar box and blackcurrant combination was prevalent. It was a sterner, stiffer wine than I was expecting, going better with food than on its own. There were some bitter tannins on this, with a greenish edge. In time I'd guess they will be fine but quite demanding now. Far more interesting in 3-4 years. (1157 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 10/21/2007: Light but not fragile or short, a clean red and black currant nose with a little cedar. Palate is more cassis, with a lead pencil note and some earth on the finish. Not thrilling or attention-grabbing, but a solid and classical Graves. .
B/B+ (2050 views)
Tasted by awinestory on 7/22/2007 & rated 80 points: clear, inky purple-black ruby core with ruby highlights, pale fuschia rim clean, developing, soft purple fruit at first sniff, lavendar, violet - highly floral - subtle sweet baking spice"brandied red/black fruit aroma" dry, medium+ body and intensity, tannin is medium, a bit sour, acidity is medium+ (unusual for a red), finish is long and p (1303 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 7/21/2007: nice classically styled Graves. Red plum and currant fruit, a bit of woodsmoke, some graphite and cedar. Not a huge wine, more a middleweight, but enough tannins to stand up to the rare meat. There's good acidity helping give it a fresh note, and good length for a wine that normally retails in the $20-25 range Very happy to have this in the cellar, though I think it's probably not one to make old bones, I plan on enjoying over next 10 years. B+ (2083 views)
Tasted by Redline325 on 7/5/2007 & rated 82 points: Nice nose makes it easily identifible. Not complex or full at all. Clean finish. Simple everyday Bordeaux (2507 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
