| Community Tasting Notes (average 86 pts. and median of 86 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Vinolew on 11/19/2017 & rated 85 points: After pouring a glass, right away the color caught my eye. It was very dark almost inky. Not having an older Bordeaux in a while I forgot how beautiful it was. The nose was earthy almost leathery. The taste was almost of burnt smokey oak and dark fruit. As it sat it opened up to a wonderful berry chocolate and spice (clove-pepper), good mellow tannin's with a finish of which I haven't tasted in some time, dry and long lasting dark fruit. (1554 views) | | Tasted by wconnolly on 10/14/2017 & rated 87 points: Big, floral, perfumed nose with a bit of mushroom and moss. On that palette, mostly earthy notes of leather, forest floor, minerals but with some dark plum and cassis on the finish. A good QPR wine but time to drink. (1597 views) | | Tasted by wconnolly on 6/25/2017 & rated 80 points: Found this to be rather bitter and flat. Maybe bottle variation as previous bottles were more fruit filled and interesting. (1809 views) | | Tasted by loantaka on 10/19/2016 & rated 91 points: opened up after 30 minutes (2232 views) | | Tasted by wconnolly on 2/29/2016 & rated 86 points: Soft, round and balanced. This is drinking well right now with plenty of fruit, well integrated tannins, a hint of oak and a medium finish. Great QPR. (2718 views) | | Tasted by wconnolly on 12/21/2015 & rated 87 points: Medium indigo in color. A musty earthy nose. Some jammy dark fruit on the palate but outweighed by minerals and slate. Good QPR. Starting to open a bit. (1540 views) | | Tasted by loantaka on 9/11/2015 & rated 92 points: After half a case, this is surprisingly coming into its own. Very elegant and restrained. Nicely balanced. Not too fruity. Have nine years age. Garnet in color. (1767 views) | | Tasted by loantaka on 7/25/2015 & rated 88 points: Brought to Juniper. Surprisingly better than previous bottles. Had with gnocchi and mushrooms. Still tannic on the finish. Could possibly age with a few more years. (1645 views) | | Tasted by loantaka on 5/24/2015 & rated 81 points: Went flat within an hour. (1419 views) | | Tasted by juneau bob on 9/21/2014 & rated 84 points: Nothing particularly distinguishing about this wine. The Columbia 2012 we opened for cooking had more going for it than this French stuff. (1394 views) | | Tasted by rwpalmer on 8/21/2013 & rated 86 points: Colour is still deep, but whereas 3 years ago I gave the charred oak the benefit of the doubt, I am now less hopeful that the fruit will ever shine. Consumed over two nights it was soft and easy in its charms--not at all typical of a 2006. Full-bodied and almost round. Hardly Graves-like. Not bad but not especially exciting. (2262 views) | | Tasted by margolism on 5/29/2013 & rated 87 points: Decent, but unexceptional bordeaux. Neither offends or excites. I would be more specific if something positive or negative stood out. (2168 views) | | Tasted by ikileo on 9/23/2011: Popped and poured. Drank over 2 hours. No formal notes.
Started off with very cab fruit and leafy notes on the nose. Mid palate was a little hollow and the body was a touch on the lighter side of medium bodied. As time passed and more swirling, but the end of the dinner i had opened up very nicely, the nose had more complex notes including soy sauce, compote and chocolate. The mouthfeel rounded out and it tasted more flavourfu with a cool streak of minerals running through. A nice casual weeknight wine. (3353 views) | | Tasted by hubas on 5/1/2011 & rated 90 points: Strong acidity and lots of red berries. The tannins where very strong and almost a bit grainy. (3180 views) | | Tasted by sdwineguru on 2/24/2011 & rated 87 points: Graves nose, with earth, balance of Cabernet, Merlot fruit aroma; mid-soft body; decent flavor; a little short. but great with beef and light mushroom sauce. (3106 views) | | Tasted by peternelson on 10/14/2010 & rated 89 points: Foresty notes with smoke and earthy tones. Classic Pessac Leognan with Cabernet France and other Bordeaux grapes. (987 views) | | Tasted by rwpalmer on 9/5/2010 & rated 88 points: I thought this utterly charming. The first night it had excessive charred oak, with a nicely textured body of moderate weight and length. The next day delicious raspberry fruit came to the fore with a background of true Graves terroir. This should be enjoyable for the next 3 and maybe 5 years. (2195 views) | | Tasted by cma82 on 10/7/2009 & rated 86 points: Opened nicely into a nose of black cherry, currants, charcoal, and cedar. Medium bodied with a decent finish. Would probably be nice in a few years (2613 views) | | Tasted by KeithAkers on 5/15/2009 & rated 88 points: nose: classic graves nose of charcoal, mineral rich earth, dark red cherries, cedar and some bits of dark berries
taste: excellent medium feel with good tannins along with pure graves tones of charcoal, mineral rich earth, dark red cherries and some cedar tones with a bit of tobacco
overall: a quality young graves at a good price. This gives the exact profile that I would want and expect and it works well. Should be really nice in a few years (2197 views) | | Tasted by spmulligan on 2/2/2009 & rated 84 points: I'm not sure what to say about this wine. It's good, not great. Tasted better the second day with a little air. Would recommend, but wouldn't pay too much. I should have held onto it a little longer. | Château Picque Caillou Producer websiteRed Bordeaux BlendRed Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.
Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.France Vins de France (Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins ) | Pages Vins, Directory of French Winegrowers | French Wine (Wikipedia)

History of Bordeaux
History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification
"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson
"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman "The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson
"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson
"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon RimmermanGraves Vins de Graves (Conseil des Vins de Graves) - Read more about Pessac Leogan Graves and its winesPessac-Léognan Pessac-Leognan reds: Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Soil: Predominantly gravel and sandy rock, with varying proportions of clay and sandstone Surface Area: 1,491 ha
