Was not impressed by this wine on Day 1 as it tasted hot and woody, but by day 2 is developed more complexity. Still coming into its own, so I would drink 2024-2034. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 90. (579 views) | | Tasted by Sid G on 5/10/2021 & rated 91 points: A gentle, even delicate, cab. Nice bouquet of red fruit, light body, moderate acid, mature tannins, nice finish. Tastes of dark and red cherries. A very easy wine to like a lot. (995 views) | | Tasted by Lawino7 on 3/15/2021 & rated 91 points: Nuanced. Understated loveliness. (1035 views) | | Tasted by stbraunt on 12/31/2019 & rated 92 points: As cabs go, this one is lovely. Very approachable - decanted for an hour and paired beautifully with skirt steak. A little dry on the aftertaste but rich fruit flavor. (1825 views) | | Tasted by srh on 12/21/2019: Big Gun Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Tasting [9 Napa, 1 Paso] (San Diego Wine Co.): “93% C.S. & 7% P.V. harvested 10/10 – 10/25/14 @ 22.80° ave Brix, the majority from the dry-farmed 9.5 acres of C.S. planted on the estate, located 1/3 mi N of Oakville Cross Rd on Money Rd.; The fruit was sorted in the vyd & on the crushpad, then gently crushed into small fermenters. We let the juice ferment on the skins for 14 days after inoculation using ICVD254 yeast. The wine went through a combination of punch-downs & pump-overs 2x/day during this period. After pressing, the wine was racked into 60% new FR & 10% new AM oak barrels & left to age for 24 mos. During this time, native malolactic fermentation occurred. 1,095 cases bottled filtered on 12/14/16 & released Aug ’18. 13.9% ABV, 0.1% R.S., 6.3 g/L T.A., & 3.78 pH;”
N: CLOSED; Smoke atop cherries & pyrazines? Intensity lurking?
P: Med, poss LM, body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which stays within hailing distance of the init frt as it seamlessly works itself into & through the LONG, BALANCED finish with an elegantly subtle, tangy/swtness to the few, firming, relatively innocuous, dusty tannins. VERY nicely done for now & into, probably through, '23. My EXC (92,93/100 using that metric), & an impressive QPR (given the tasted price) for a classically styled C.S. from this AVA! 90-92 pts WA (12/30/16) & 90 WE (4/1/19) @ $75. [This vendor's (closeout?) $44.99 is a remarkable $15 < either of wine-searcher's 2 current postings!] (1675 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 8/11/2019 & rated 91 points: Nose of black cherry, plum, and dusty earth, same on the palate, medium/big body, tasty, rich fruit, mouth filling fruit, at peak drinking, easy to sip and savor, has a long finish. | Saddleback Cellars Producer website Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Saddleback Cellars was founded by acclaimed winemaker Nils Venge. Nils got his start in Napa Valley in 1970 and has been creating award winning wines at Saddleback since 1981. He is known as the "King of Cabs" due to being the first American to receive a 100 point score from wine-critic extraordinaire Robert Parker Jr. for making a 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Saddleback sits on Money Road, a dead-end lane in Oakville, a renowned Cabernet growing A.V.A. (American Vinicultural Area). Our first love is Cabernet Sauvignon; although we make a variety of wonderful wines both from our estate vineyard in Oakville and from around the valley. Some of these include; Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Zinfandel – and even smaller lots, made especially for our Posse Wine Club, which include: Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Charbono, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc to name of few.Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Oakville |
