Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Siwink57 on 1/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Better than 6 months ago. Now getting some of the meaty/smokey notes that were previously missing. A nice expression of the varietal from Washington State. Will look into some recent vintages as this was my last 2016. 4.3 stars (1060 views)
Tasted by Bryan49 on 10/14/2023 & rated 93 points: Beautiful color. Olives, plum, cherry, mineral & spice/pepper. Great purity, velvet mouthfeel and mineral tinged finish. You can smell and taste the terroir similar to Cote Rotie. Excellent value. (1052 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 10/10/2023 & rated 91 points: Been waiting for this to mellow, and it hasn't. Still pretty good.... (1192 views)
Tasted by SCM Fan on 7/13/2023 flawed bottle: Massive weighted bottle- should match the quality inside- this does not. Typical with high pH, low acidity Syrahs this developed quite the nasty VA on it. Having worked at a winery for years, I'm sensitive to slightest VA as I could not pour nor sell a customer a defective or flawed wine. My friend finally agreed with me that this Syrah had that VA and needs to be poured out. The Gigondas we had next to this shined however. (1274 views)
Tasted by Siwink57 on 7/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Starting to taste the age. The green taste of 3 years ago has disappeared; fruit is more forward. Decent mouthfeel and length but lacking smoke/meat notes. Don't see much upside. Drink up. 4.1 stars (1193 views)
Tasted by Laz4wine on 6/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Meaty, smokey char, intense wild blackberry and raspberry. Upside? (1322 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 12/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Bold and vibrant, still benefits from some air. (1618 views)
Tasted by Jessie and Max on 10/18/2022 & rated 92 points: Wow! Powerful, complex nose right from the start: black olive, chocolate, rubber, leather, raisin, cooked blackberry, bacon, savory, black pepper, and pine. The palate is smooth, surprisingly and pleasingly light weight, though big in flavor, with a long savory leather finish. Fine tannins, with floral, aerosolized cherry, but otherwise no detectable fruit for us. The texture is remarkable. Don't just sip - be sure to swish and aerosolize to view this wine from all angles.  Tasted by wino121 on 9/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Fabulous, and in the bubble.
Decant is a must,

Tasted by robmatic on 5/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Quick taste. Very ripe but also very structured. Tannic and almost backward, will take many years for this to mature. Spicy and dense. (2042 views)
Tasted by Wine Gopher on 3/11/2022 & rated 92 points: The aromas leap from the glass. A dark fruit note, smoke, pepper, wet stone and a bit of funk. Tastes start with the dark fruit and then evolve to charcuterie, a red fruit note, and pepper. Medium finish with acidic backbone. (4655 views)
Tasted by vinoareni on 1/14/2022 & rated 86 points: Sorry but I don’t like a black pepper bomb as some other reviewers have mentioned. I had the wine 4 hours after opening with pizza. (4900 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 12/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Day 1: Last bottle of this steal of a deal for $20.00. Black olives, spice, earth, roasted meats, black pepper and stone. Super complex and tasty wine. Outstanding value. 92 points
Day 2: This was great on a pop and pour. Not nearly as good on day 2 and lacks the complexity of day 1.
Recommendation: Pop and pour and enjoy. I would drink these on the younger side but a few more years of cellaring won't hurt. (5037 views)
Tasted by JensAgo on 12/14/2021 & rated 92 points: First MCK experience and expression! Deep and dark ruby, dense - almost oily in appearance. Nose combines pepper, intensity, olives, dark fruits / blueberries and plums, bunch of meat, smoke. Palate is full-bodied, rich and vast at all levels, peppery and meaty with good juicy black fruit, balanced acidity, velvety and spicy long finish. Will keep remaining bottles for a couple of more years. (2437 views)
Tasted by HU on 11/22/2021 & rated 92 points: Dark. Fresh ( i.e. on the acidic side ). Fruity, dark fruits, in particular black currant. Very Syrah. Very enjoyable. Perhaps a bit linear overall. Good to drink now, but will also be fine to keep for later. 91 or 92? I give it a 92. …. Bottle 4 on Jan 26 2024. Quite tannic, almost bitter, though the wine developed during the evening. Meaty, smokey, indeed. Licorice, dark flavors eventually. But perhaps wait for another three years to drink the remaining two. (2151 views)
Tasted by Eriklainen on 11/6/2021: Really not too warm at all. Very northern Rhone, albeit with some sunshine. I think this is a really good expression of the Syrah grape. I had it to lamb and that paired really well. Grape seed, some smoke and slightest of black pepper. Fruit is dark. (1996 views)
Tasted by Bryan49 on 10/23/2021 & rated 93 points: 1st of 6 bottles. Great wine. Nose of Plumb and sassafras. Dark fruit on palate with silky, rich and deep finish. Medium to full bodied. Didn't get to experience Day 2 as my wife finished it... (1888 views)
Tasted by Eriklainen on 7/25/2021: Super nice Syrah a la northern Rhone but without any prominent tannins. Good to go. Really quite lovely. (2186 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 5/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Day 1: Bandaid funk, black pepper, soy, dark fruits and spices. Full throttle on this bottle and delicious. Good Friday night wine. 92 points
Day 2: The funk has blown off and features tar, soy, black pepper, dark fruits and spice. Medium plus finish. Pretty intense Syrah overall but enjoyable. 92 points
Recommendation: Buy if you like a bigger style Syrah. (2380 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 4/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Day 1: Bright fruit featuring cherry, plum and blackberries. A nice mild funk on this wine along with black pepper, menthol and floral notes. Reminds me of a well made Aussie. 91 points
Day 2: Interesting change on this wine on day 2. Picking up sour cherry, menthol, white pepper, gravel, earth and floral notes. While certainly not Northern Rhone much similar to it than the Aussie comparison in day 1. Just a unique development. 92 points
Day 2.5: Similar to day 2 but adds a roasted meat character that is very nice.
Recommendation: Buy this wine. Outstanding value. (2612 views)
Tasted by spaceteddy on 4/2/2021 & rated 90 points: Tannins still quite pronounced ar first taste. One hour’s decanting made them more supple and soft. On nose and palate lot of spices and dark fruit. Quite good already now but I believe the wine should be even better in a year or two. (2209 views)
Tasted by johnnyo on 3/19/2021 & rated 90 points: Full bodied jammy black fruit with notes of coffee, tobacco, and pepper. Very stylistic of K fruit intensity. (2214 views)
Tasted by Lord Rodney on 12/29/2020 & rated 90 points: This was very well made with dark cool fruits, bacon and green peppers. great balance of fruit and acidity. I don't drink this kind of wine often but the quality was undeniable (2283 views)
Tasted by yasha on 12/6/2020 & rated 92 points: like always good (2285 views)
Tasted by jay_hawk@yahoo.com on 10/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Savory with menthol, pepper and some blackberries on the nose Plenty of structure and tannins to age another few years before I open my next bottle. (2106 views)

Full Pull, Full Pull K (5/26/2019)
(K Vintners Syrah Motor City Kitty Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard) Hello friends. We have small parcels of a trio of rarities from the recent set of K Vintners releases. These offers are notorious for turning into feeding frenzies, and this one – our first of the year – promises to be extra cuckoo given the wines involved and the parcel sizes. I suspect we’ll have to under-allocate here, given the parcel sizes, so a quick reminder of our allocation technique: Our allocations generally favor breadth over depth, so that everyone gets one bottle before anyone gets two. And our formula for prioritizing allocations includes overall orders, frequency of orders, recency of orders, list tenure, and size of order request, among other factors. Now, onto the wines: Jeb Dunnuck: Copyrighted material withheld. This is only the fourth time we’ve been able to access MCK, generally regarded as one of the stronger values in the K Syrah lineup. Warning: past allocations of MCK have been *brutal*. We’re going to ask for max order requests of 4 bottles, but more likely allocations are 1-2 bottles, and I won’t be surprised if some folks are shut out entirely. Apologies if that’s the case. Entirely from Boushey Oldfield, it spent 47 days on skins, and was aged entirely in large-format French puncheons, 25% new. Listed alc is 14.5%. From Charles: Not shy to say, super expressive! Classic in approach which abounds with plum, black cherry, sandalwood, layered along with cured meat, white pepper and minerals. Voluminous, velvet and pure. Another milestone in the history that is M.C.K.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Washington Wine
Washington State is a premium wine producing region located in the northwest corner of the United States. Although a relatively young wine industry, it is now the nation's second largest wine producer and is ranked among the world's top wine regions. Washington wines are found nationally in all 50 states and internationally in more than 40 countries.

Wineries
With 30,000+ acres planted, the state has ideal geography and conditions for growing premium vinifera wine grapes. Primarily grown on their own root stocks, the vines produce grapes of consistent quality, resulting in strong vintages year after year. While its focus is on Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the region also produces a wide range of other spectacular whites and reds.

Growers
Winemakers from all over the world have chosen to establish themselves in Washington, where they can create wines reflecting this region's unique characteristics. Their hand-crafted wines are receiving wide acclaim from critics regionally, nationally and internationally for their consistently high quality. Many of them have received scores of 90 and above from the major wine media. Overall this is a higher percentage than other leading wine regions.

Regions
As the state's fourth largest fruit crop, the Washington wine industry is an important contributor to the long-term preservation of Washington agriculture. The industry is committed to sustainable agricultural practices and conservation of water resources.

Varieties
Washington produces more than 20 wine grape varieties - a ratio of 56 percent white to 44 percent red. As the industry matures and experiments, it finds many grape varieties that thrive throughout Washington's microclimates. There are more than 16,000 vineyard acres of red wine varieties statewide.

History & Vintages
Washington's wine future is limitless. As consumers discover the quality of Washington wines, demand continues to grow nationally and internationally. New acreage and wine varietals are being planted and new wineries are opening at a remarkable pace. Washington State is recognized as a premium viticultural region around the world.

State Facts
Washington's wine industry generates more than $3 billion to the state economy. It employs more than 14,000 people, directly and indirectly, with projections to add nearly 2,000 more jobs by 2006. In terms of tax revenues accrued to the state and federal government, wine grapes are among the highest tax generators of any agricultural crops. Furthermore, Washington wine tourism attracts nearly two million visitors annually contributing to the positive growth of local and regional economies.
Washington State - the perfect climate for wine = ideal growing conditions, quality wines, business innovation, lifestyle, and social responsibility. All are key elements of this world-class wine industry.

Vintages
"2008 and even more so 2010 and 2011 were cool, even cold vintages (think: 2002 in the Barossa) without the extreme ripeness, extract and higher alcohol that had become the norm in the state’s post 1995 world. 2008 was manageable but the duo of 2010/2011 nearly caused a “great depression” in Washington State." - Jon Rimmerman
