Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 75 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by SMHalps on 2/23/2024 & rated 91 points: Obviously somewhat past it's prime, but still drinking very nice. The fruit is still there, but not in a big Zin kinda way. Lots of spice notes (cedar?) on the palate. A beautiful nose. I've always thought that older Turley Zins start to taste a little like aged claret (Bordeaux), and this one definitely did. (106 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 12/3/2018 & rated 93 points: Still drinking very well, with nice soft red fruit. Confirms that at least some of the Turleys can age with proper storage. (1582 views)
Tasted by M DU VIN on 3/26/2018 & rated 92 points: Excellent aged Turley zin. Still had nice fruit, but with the added depth that can come with age. (1713 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 12/28/2016 & rated 85 points: Opened and poured. Cuvee direct from winery and impeccably stored since release. Loads of sediment and stuff clinging to the side of the bottle. A thinnish watery consistency of glycol esters. Barnyard funk on the nose hiding any semblance to zinfandel here. Sweet almost acrid acidity on the palate, showing tart reds that soak the senses. With air the barn is blowing off a bit, and more lively cherry coke and strawberry notes reveal themselves. Hard to tell this is a zin honestly. An off bottle for Turley I think, as this is not the quality I expect - will have to follow-up with Larry to get a refund. Turning more sour and thin after a day under vac-u-vin....one of the weakest Turley's I have had. (2188 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 6/18/2016 & rated 92 points: excellent aged turley again. not overly ripe, brambles over black fruit. spicy mid with some sweeter plum and pepper. the finish is medium but that would be my only gripe. drink in the near future. delicious. (2723 views)
Tasted by Neat Water Back on 4/13/2015: Peppery which is what I like in a zin. I really enjoy the mountain fruit and this fit the bill tonight. Outer rim appears garnet and a deeper cherry color for the body of the glass. This bottle threw off a lot of sediment.

Medium bodied and what I thought was light to medium tannins. A bit of sour cherry on the finish, some blackberry and raspberry on the mid palate.

The nose reveals quite a bit of alcohol, confirmed by the bottle label at 15.1%, the nose is quite hot. However, I do not find the alcohol as prominent on my palate. A nice wine that I would certainly drink again. (3170 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 3/26/2014 & rated 90 points: Medium-bodied mixed berry fruit, cloudy, flavors a bit dulled, tannins have mellowed, some pepper and tarriness noted, may have been a corked bottle, disappointing given previous tasting notes, aged Turley wines seem highly unpredictable (2960 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 1/12/2014 & rated 92 points: Rusty in color. 15.1% ABV. Red fruits, pepper and anise on the nose. Medium body with strong acidity. Boysenberry, plum, raspberry compote, licorice and pepper on the palate. This has Howell Mountain written all over it. Light tannins. Drink soon. (2953 views)
Tasted by Sir Long Pour on 11/27/2013 & rated 90 points: Wonderful character - aroma stayed in glass for a very long time - this power zin aged nicely! (1858 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/1/2013 & rated 91 points: I have always liked the 2005 vintage from Turley, and the streak continues. Red currant, pepper and spices with black fruit undertones. Flavors of licorice, pepper, boysenberry and plum with just a hint of raisins. Long finish. (2627 views)
Tasted by Innerducky on 11/16/2012: Sadly, this bottle was way past it's prime, which is a bummer since others recently opened and loved it. (2682 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 10/16/2012 & rated 93 points: Delicious, mellowed, medium-bodied mixed berry fruit with loads of pepper, cedary, and tarry flavors, fruit has waned with age and tannins dominate, excellent structure, a bit eccentric a la Turley style, medium finish (2699 views)
Tasted by gaschief on 9/16/2012 & rated 92 points: beautiful Zin, berries and fruit, smooth and well integrated-- Fine resonance of flavors and aroma (1407 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/6/2012 & rated 91 points: BLACK CHERRIES AND BLACK RASPBERRIES IN THE NOSE AND FLAVOR. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (635 views)
Tasted by sbtoby on 5/11/2012 & rated 86 points: Too old. Would have been much better a year or too ago. Probably undrinkable next year. The Turley fruit profile you expect is gone, replace with a mild musty taste. Waited on this too long. My bad. (1785 views)
Tasted by Tparker on 4/15/2012: - Ruby color with medium forming legs and aromas of raspberry. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of black pepper with a medium/full body. Flabby texture with a medium finish. (2886 views)
Tasted by Uglypinga on 4/8/2012: Olive tapenade, confectioner's sugar, earth and black pepper on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with raspberries, some herbal elements and white pepper. Somewhat clipped on the finish. Good, not great. (2679 views)
Tasted by greyhound93 on 2/18/2012 & rated 93 points: The best Turley we have had in years. It tasted like Turley of old - rich, fully bodied, and tannic. A Zinfull fruit bomb with strong pepper and cedar undertones. (2689 views)
Tasted by rdsboca on 1/13/2012 & rated 90 points: Fully mature, plum and cherry with some white pepper. The tannins have smoothed out and the heat is gone. Nice food wine. We used it with dessert and it worked well. (2315 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 12/4/2011: Showing some age by the development of the fruit (more compote-like and blended together on the palate) and the relaxed, smoother palate. Like a mixed fruit compote of cherries, berries and cranberry, having simmered together and blended. Some Zin bramble notes, but these too, like the palate overall, are relaxed. Clearly an evolved Zin, which is not to say that it's better or worse than when it was a young wine (I don't recall having tried this young), but one does note an absence of youthful Zin power and exuberance. Also noteworthy for the lack of overt oak and alcohol; the absence of both is doubly good. No oxidation overnight, but the wine does emit an odd rubber-like note that reminds me of Syrah, and is somewhat muddy. I think this is the last vintage of Turley that I bought for my cellar. (2404 views)
Tasted by mcubed on 10/9/2011 & rated 93 points: Outstanding zin. Well balanced and not prone to the sometimes overdone Turley fruit bombs. Thoroughly consistent from nose to finish. Perfect match with short ribs. (1571 views)
Tasted by btock on 8/28/2011 & rated 89 points: Agree with other posts on the medium-bodied comments. This is not a Turley bruiser, nor particularly typical for a Howell Mtn zin. I found this more textured, less assertive. Nice enough flavors, but on the soft side with black cherry, bit of earth. Served with penne and Italian sausage, and that worked well (2369 views)
Tasted by Double D on 8/11/2011 & rated 92 points: Dark, smooth, rich blueberry, balckberry and plum tastes of black pepper also...worth the wait. (1581 views)
Tasted by IAMVLAD on 6/2/2011 & rated 86 points: light. probably to be expected given the vintage. (2607 views)
Tasted by MJTed on 4/12/2011 & rated 88 points: Medium body and fairly light for Turley, but not atypical of the vintage. Black raspberries, earth/bramble and glycerine on the finish. Still fresh but time to drink. (2863 views)

Rattlesnake Ridge

On Weinlagen-info

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
