Community Tasting Notes (average 89.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 25 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 12/25/2023 & rated 91 points: Retail $45. Bottle weight: 621g. 100% Syrah. Under cork. My wife described this as "an overly acidic barnyard" and she is not all that far off. But. This *is* a St. Joseph, after all and Bret is certainly part of the story. Medium color with some clear evidence of bricking, the nose has both red and black fruit, mostly baked cherry and blackberry. There is also a clear Bret element, but, honestly, for me it works. The palate is not on the tart side, it *is* the tart side. And while the fruit shows up, it struggles in the face of all that sour zinginess. Interestingly, the tannins are still alive and well on the finish, mostly silky, but not quite integrated. Again, not for my wife, but that is fine and good with me. Excellent. 91 Points. (216 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 10/2/2023 & rated 90 points: Tasting wines from the Northern Rhône (blind) (Skype): Wine 4 of 5. 13% ABV. Medium garnet color. Red and some dark fruit, some chocolate, and gamy notes, with fresh acidity. The tannin was grippy and the finish slightly chewy at first, but the tannin mostly softened and the chewiness disappeared with some aeration, making room for a fresh, red fruit-driven, balanced and integrated red. Good structure, and good balance. Darker, and more rustic again on day two. A rollercoaster experience. Should pair well with Entrecôte or Filet Mignon (no sauce). Drink or hold. 89-92(?) (331 views)
Tasted by Magnum PI on 11/12/2022 & rated 86 points: I enjoyed this bottle with chicken tikka and mulligatawny soup. I am a very big fan of St. Cosme wine in general, and drink many bottles of their Southern Rhone wines every year. I don't tend to drink much of their St. Joseph or Cote Rotie. I was a little dubious about this bottle because of the age, but I decided to open and drink it without a decant. Decent nose and enjoyable, albeit fading, mid-palate. A wide range of notes, which I won't get into in detail, but suffice it to say that there was a lot going on. This is probably 3-5 years past its prime drinking window, but still worth opening. Reading some reviews from 10+ years ago, where some decanted for an hour or more or thought the wine was not expressive, my thought is that this is a wine which needs 5-7 years in a good vintage to reach its apex, and is ultimately worth the wait.  Tasted by Bill Bucklew on 1/4/2014 & rated 89 points: PNP'd a initial earthiness on the nose, dark fruit and black olive. Really tight out of the bottle, it needed a few hours in the decanter to open up. Silky black fruit, black cherry, blackberry and cured olives. An evolving elegant wine needs time to open up and will continue to improve for a few more years. (4126 views)
Tasted by S_stas on 10/9/2012 & rated 92 points: This was a wonderful St. Jo! Fruity, but with some mineral notes and roughly in balance. Drinking good right now, but likely has a few more years alive in the bottle. (5170 views)
Tasted by SonomaWilliam on 9/19/2012 & rated 87 points: Either wasn't cellared properly, or just past its prime, which I wouldn't expect, frankly.

None of the tightness others describe. A bit pruny on nose and mouth, decent, but not remarkable black fruit, lacking the characteristics I'd expected. (5351 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 8/12/2012: Dark red color. Pretty nose of smoke, pepper, and black fruit. In the mouth, assertive with its fruit and structure, with a smoky edge to the fruit and pepper notes. A wine of surprising balance for all its structure. A- (5004 views)
Tasted by Winetex on 5/29/2012 & rated 87 points: Dark violet color; Dark fruit on the nose and palate along with a pruney grape flavor I didn't care for. Short finish. This should have been a better wine than it was - it just never opened up. Perhaps a longer decant - we briefly decanted when a couple of hours might have helped. (5077 views)
Tasted by madflyfisher on 1/9/2012: Had this over two days. Rather dark for a St. Joseph, but beautiful deep, violet colour. On the nose had some lightly smoked bacon combined with some dark berries. On the palate a fresh acidity in good balance with the mouthwatering tannins plus some texture too. Tastes revealed: Some graphite/pencil lead, dark ripe berries for sure, and even gun powder, I think (!!) I can confirm that it accompanies lamb chops with roast potatoes and mint gele well. On the second day, the taste notes apeared more "gathered", in lack of a better word, but also a tad more subdued. (2249 views)
Tasted by InternationalWineReport on 5/13/2011 & rated 89 points: Aromas and flavors of raspberry, pepper, spice and meat. Medium-Full body and a grippy chewy finish. (3014 views)
Tasted by Boffo on 3/31/2011 & rated 80 points: Pret à etre bu, Svein u Wiebke (2111 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 9/9/2010: Too high on acidity, and too low on fruit. (3483 views)
Tasted by celtic67 on 10/10/2009 & rated 91 points: decanted 4hrs. slightly less meaty & more floral/violet nose. black fruit. great minerality & acidity. balanced. (3928 views)
Tasted by celtic67 on 8/29/2009 & rated 92 points: decanted 2hrs. bacon & black fruit. mild pepper. big tannins. lots of minerality on the finish, graphite. great qpr. could use some time in the cellar. (4026 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 6/11/2009 & rated 91 points: Trip to the Southern Rhone; 6/11/2009-6/12/2009 (Avignon, Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas and the Dentelles du Montmirail): Another 100% Syrah. This was head and shoulders above the Cotes du Rhone that had a similar cepage. Nose had a lovely perfume with violets wed to rare meat and graphite notes. Palate was nice and clean, with fresh acid wed to a fine tannic structure with powdery but firm, mouth-coating tannins giving a frame to deep blue fruits. The berries obviously had lots of hang time, as there was a nice ripeness both to the fruit and the tannins. The medium-length finish had a nice minerally graphite tail. Very enjoyable. (5332 views)
Tasted by ScottG on 6/8/2009 & rated 84 points: This was either extremely tight and never opened up or there just isn't much there. I will wait on the last bottle, but my feeling is that a st joseph like this shouldn't go so dumb... but then again, what do I know? (4543 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 8/8/2008 & rated 91 points: Winery: Dark purple, conc blk blue frt; rich, big t’s, very young indeed. Need to check this out in 3-5 years. Very good, but 2002 is drinkable now. (1895 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/30/2008 & rated 91 points: Chateau St. Cosme Tasting (Beltramo's in Menlo Park, California): Dark red violet color; tight, herbaceous red fruit nose; tight, slightly herbaceous, concentrated tart red fruit palate with iron and minerality; medium-plus finish (100% Syrah) (4516 views)
Tasted by foodandwineblog on 3/21/2008 & rated 91 points: Decanted 1 hour, drank over 3 hours. Tight fruits now, but lot's of great old world character, nose had caramel, sour cherry, raspberry. Chocolate and black pepper notes showed up after 2 hours, big big tannins and good acidity. This wine will develop well and is a good QPR at $29. foodandwineblog.com (4414 views)
Tasted by Evil Homer on 3/19/2008 & rated 89 points: Dark red and dense in the glass. huge black pepper on the nose that I nearly sneezed, also black fruit. Huge tannins, nice finish but very young. Needs at least another 3-5 years of cellaring. Could add another 2-3 points at that time. (4632 views)
Tasted by JorgeH on 2/1/2008 & rated 90 points: Thick and chewy with smoky bacon, sweet black fruit and herbs de Provence notes. The wine is carried by a lovely acidity that brings me back for more. A beautiful warm glass perfect for a rainy night in the city. (4701 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
"The first red wines already tasted in the Northern Rhône promise a beautiful vintage, with a quality close to the 2015 or even the 2009 vintage" - NEWRHÔNE MILLESIMES
