Tasted by JonBarnes1 on 1/21/2024: Serine grape. Given that, and the producer, I had lofty expectations that weren’t quite met. The concentrated notes of dark berries and smoke are there, but the nose is alcoholic and the body is out of balance. Maybe can be chalked up to the vintage or to poor storage conditions (I didn’t buy this at my usual retailer), but otherwise I would say this under delivers. Definitely doesn’t measure up to the Faury vieille vignes (also serine) that we tasted in parallel. (373 views)
Tasted by UFGators on 4/21/2023 & rated 93 points: Can be enjoyed now but upside for the future. Loads of dark berries and smoked meats. High acidity and a long finish. The 15 percent alcohol masked and there is no heat on palate or the finish. Drink or hold. 93+ (741 views)
Tasted by Motz on 12/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Coravin access.

Primarily blue and purple fruits and berries, savory herbs, pepper, cured meats, and hints of smoke. All highly appealing...with the exception of an alcohol jolt.

Excellent energy and tension. The wine tastes like it smells. Serious acid, fine tannins, considerable finish. Alcohol shows on the palate too...particularly at the back.

Likely to put on weight over the next several years, which might help to integrate the alcohol. If so, score it 92-93. (1479 views)
Tasted by ocassiuso on 11/8/2022: Bottle 1349g. Moderately intense aromas of red fruit, black fruit, black olive, fresh. Dry, with moderate acidity and moderate grippy tannins, only medium-bodied, yet 14.5°. Ripe berries, black olive again, herbal freshness, moderate length. Lamb chops with cumin and paprika tonight.

Meatier and more savory after an hour (and the meal), white pepper too. (882 views)
Tasted by stbraunt on 8/16/2022 & rated 91 points: It’s a touch sweet but very rich fruit flavor. Good balance after the initial sip. (1115 views)
Tasted by Jon Harrison on 6/27/2022 & rated 92 points: (Imported by Winebow)

Color: Dark ruby (but not opaque).

Nose: Sexy, perfumy, ripe, black/purple plum, blackberry liqueur, with a kiss of black olive, violets, and dark damp soil (no overt smoke). Classic northern Rhone nose. Beautiful.

Palate: Full body (alcohol at 14.5%). Excellent concentration and extract. Rich mouthful of black plum, blackberry, black raspberry, and black olive Syrah. Ripe, soft tannins. Excellent balance.

This is a wonderful elegant St-Joseph. I love this!
Nice value.

Now: 91-92 solid.
Peak drinking window: 2022-2028.

Tasted by Everything Ahead on 2/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Interesting wine that obviously needs time but we tried it with a several hour decant and then over the next two days. It changed quite a bit over those few days. At first, that signature house "yeast" quality was prominent (with a hint of brett, and natural-wine like funk), but by day 2 and 3 the fruit really came through (black and blue berries), along with Northern Rhone floral syrah qualities and a distinct note on the palate of brown sugar. This wine in my experience ages well so will let my remaining bottles sleep for 5 years or more. I am starting to prefer St Cosme's Northern Rhone bottlings (and their great value pure syrah cotes du rhone) over their more critically-acclaimed Southern Rhones (Gigondas) as climate change makes the latter too high in the alcohol department for me ...  Tasted by sid_loves_wine on 12/21/2021 & rated 94 points: Even at this early stage, super beautiful and quite pure. It could use some time to unwind (it's a little shy) but I wouldn't say closed- was totally lovely right on the pop n' pour. If opening now I wouldn't decant, just enjoy slowly, although a short cellar nap is ideal.

Gentle but gorgeous nose with fresh blackberry, something richer like blueberry liqueur (mirto!), plenty of olive brine, light meaty notes and violet floral tones. Basically no oak noticeable, and smells quite fresh, not at all extracted or overripe.

This continues on the palate in an even nicer way, feeling very vibrant and lively but never tart or harsh. Again with lots of perfectly ripe blackberry or mulberry, floral and airy, silken tannins providing a creamy weight and absolutely perfect briney acidity that felt persistent without getting in the way of the ripeness. Feels much lower than 14.5% ABV, it's warming, but mostly savory, fresh, understated.

Very similar to the Chave Offerus, maybe a little less expressive on the nose but more complex, and even better-balanced on the palate. Crazy QPR around $30 (seems common), would still be great in the $40 range, although by that point it has some solid syrah competition. (1295 views)
Tasted by lkilpio on 11/28/2021 & rated 91 points: This full-bodied wine is still too young and unintegrated, but very promising. The wine is very structured, with gripping tannins and acids. It is quite fruity as well, but still fairly closed. The wine is revealing promising notes of wet crushed stone, smashed blackberries and blackcurrants, plum and pepper. This is going to be great after a few years. The points are describing my impressions now. (1083 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

### 2017 vintage ###
