Tasted by Neurowine1 on 5/15/2022: The last time I had this was 2012. Tonight, paired with an 00 Cavalotto Bricco Boschis San Giuseppe riserva (modern vs traditional), and grilled hanger steaks, it was awesome. Very lovely, polished, cleanly made modern baroli. Yes, the wood was apparent, esp compared to the Cavalotto, but it was not intrusive or overbearing. Clean dark fruits, saddle leather, and dried herbs. Sexy stuff. This has aged perfectly and is clearly in the zone now. Two more bottles of this I am really looking forward to. (1331 views)
Tasted by Duce on 2/21/2022 & rated 91 points: Bricking around the edges, dried cherries and dried flowers, forest floor and mushrooms (1332 views)
Tasted by Sanlucar on 11/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Overpriced by at least 25%, this wine is very nice but falls short of expectations given the lofty reviews & price tag. Wild strawberries, dark plums and tertiary flavors of balsamic with old-world spices were the best part of this wine. And the tannins were classic Barolo; long and persistent. (1698 views)
Tasted by SparkyMI on 9/29/2021 & rated 92 points: Lovely wine. Fruit began to fade at around one hour.
Drink up. (1675 views)
Tasted by Smithc1214 on 7/9/2021 & rated 87 points: Feels past it’s prime. Still has some fruit left and dose much better with some food. Drink now (1780 views)
Tasted by SparkyMI on 4/30/2021 & rated 90 points: Getting old but still a lovely wine. (1324 views)
Tasted by SteelerFan on 11/24/2020 & rated 92 points: Deep and long. Complex. Drinking well. (1623 views)
Tasted by Stevey on 11/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Pulled from cellar and let sit for 24h before opening, then opened and slow ox in bottle for 2 hours. Black fruit dominant, still excellent structure supported by strong tannic finish; full bodied, this wine can last many more years, but good to go now after some air time. Drank over 3 hours and opened up further with more time. Drink or hold. (1468 views)
Tasted by WhinyWiner on 4/27/2020 & rated 94 points: Scrumptious Barolo. No decant needed, drank well over 3 hours till it was finished. Lots of fruit, great acidity. Oak was only moderate and didn't detract from fruit. Can't imagine it will get better, but maybe. (1885 views)
Tasted by SparkyMI on 12/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Beginning to dry out, but with food is just fine. (1996 views)
Tasted by awkiii on 11/19/2019 & rated 92 points: decanted half hour and was wonderful (1872 views)
Tasted by Pickler on 3/16/2019 & rated 92 points: Tar and roses - perfect after a two hour decant (2050 views)
Tasted by Swartzy on 4/21/2018 & rated 94 points: Drinking well. Scavino is always a treat. (3223 views)
Tasted by Smatk on 9/24/2017 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous dark ruby to orange rim. Started to shine after about an hour open, decanted to remove sediment. Nose needs some coaxing, some hints of tar, violets, maybe some smoke, potting soil, and cherry. Palate is complex; dark ripe cherry, rose petal, hints of anise, and cola. There's a rich, umami savory note that runs through the palate. Nice acidity with a charcoal ashy tannin. Lip smacking and long, a candied cherry note lingers in the mouth. This wine is begging to accompany pan roasted squab. (3243 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 12/17/2016 & rated 93 points: Wine Friends Converge (Taberna, Bukit Merah + Pietrasanta, Portsdown): A very nice Barolo - this was an amazing pairing with pasta in a rabbit ragu. There was a beautiful nose with this one, with dark flower petals littered over deep-fruited aromas of plums, black cherries and cassis, and then bits of graphite and tar, bloody meat and leather, and some liquorice and spice. A real kaleidoscope of a bouquet - deep, dark and savoury, yet also beautifully perfumed. Wonderful stuff. The palate was still very much in the grip of chewy, powdery tannins that needed the slightly gamey meat to tame. Beyond that though, it had a lovely shape in the mouth, with juicy flavours of dark cherry and blackberry wreathed with drifts of smoky spice and menthol. There was a lovely sense of presence on the wine, with both complexity and clarity to the way in unfolded in the mouth. Good long finish too, quite smokey, with note tar, ash and asphalt. Really nice on the night, especially with the pasta, which brought out a lovely sweetness in the fruit, but there is still a long way to go with this one. (1285 views)
Tasted by JerM on 12/17/2016 & rated 95 points: Wino Friends Converge! (Taberna): Broad orange rim. Rich dark cherry, soft plum, licorice, dark ash, hint anise/fennel. Rich, dark, seductive florals, juicy, clean and layered. Light elegant structure with fine supple tannins. Cola nut, graphite, tar, black cherries and printer's ink. Tea leaf. Tall, and tight, yet so giving and exotic. This is my first serious barolo, and gosh will this be a slippery slope! Amazing pairing with the rabbit. (4311 views)
Tasted by warreninco on 10/8/2016: - Brick color with fast forming legs and aromas of strawberry jam, black currant and dusty and has flavours of licorice anise with a full body. Polished texture with a long finish - 69th birthday at Dwight's. Polenta, roasted tomato marinara, with cod. Balanced, nuanced wine rather than majestic or overpowering. (4132 views)
Tasted by MEverley on 6/19/2016 & rated 95 points: Drinking very well at this time. (4244 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 1/4/2016 & rated 90 points: Was really excited to try this bottle but came away a little disappointed. Everything was in working order but lacked some of the depth and complexity I was hoping for. Came at the tail end of a long day which might have contributed. (90) (4291 views)
Tasted by md20 on 12/31/2015 & rated 95 points: Ausdruckstarke, gereifte Nase mit Duft nach Rosinen. Sehr ausgewogener, seidiger Barolo mit gutem Körper. Am Schluss sind noch gewisse Tanninreste spürbar, er hat also noch ein paar Jahre vor sich. 95/100 jetzt bis 2020+.

Expressive, ripe nose with aromas of raisins. Very well balanced, silky Barolo with a good body. At the end are still certain Tannins there, so he still has a few years ahead of her. 95/100 now to 2020+. (3671 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 9/28/2015: Paolo Scavino Wines (La Pizza Fresca Ristorante): Nose of ripe dark cherry. Dark ruby color, youthful and vibrant. Taste of cherry with a hint of mint. The wine is still tannic and is not even close to being ready. Wait. (3595 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 9/15/2015 & rated 94 points: candied cherries, dried plums, herbal tea, spice, cassis, supple tannins, well balanced. A (3178 views)
Tasted by up4wine on 5/31/2015 & rated 92 points: Excellent Nebbiolo fruit. This wine was totally smooth. The color was fairly light and the color showed a wine of possibly more age than would have been expected from a 2000. The acid and tannins were apparent, but not overpowering. On the palate, the acid moved to the fruit and gave a good long finish with the tannins coming in on the appropriate cue. I found no flaws of harshness or undesirable entanglements. The only thing holding this one back from a bigger score was less complexity and nuances of nose that I know can come from a great Barolo. (3205 views)
Tasted by 10centpower on 1/20/2015: Notes consistent with the other 1/18/2015 notes. (3502 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 1/18/2015 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tasting Group: Barolo & Barbaresco (Cafe Lurcat, Mpls, MN): This had a 90 minute double decant. Very dark red color. An interesting transformation rapidly here; the nose was dominated by dried herbs and dill initially and evolved rapidly to show a nice core of blacker fruits, big and ripe, black plum, black cherry, and tar. The palate is consistent, more modern and bigger than the '00 Einaudi but extremely satisfying. 92+pts. (3461 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
