Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 266 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Neecies on 8/22/2019: Immediately ready upon opening. Ripe, kirsch-y notes of dark cherry with a touch of pencil shavings and coffee. (2958 views)
Tasted by mhewitt on 10/16/2018 & rated 93 points: My last of 14 bottles and was drinking the best of all. One of the all time best values in Napa cabernet if you can get it at discount pricing. (3314 views)
Tasted by Whine-oh on 9/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Had at restaurant, Decanted tableside. No significant sed.No significant bricking. Represented well as a modern style Cali cab. No flaws, mild tannins, gave good structure. Alive and well tonight, good with food. (3216 views)
Tasted by mdkraft99 on 7/29/2018 & rated 92 points: Agree with notes from BAM_MAN, perfect description from what we tasted, paired great with peppercorn NY strip steaks. Definitely needed time to open up, but I do think this is about peaked and won't likely get much better with more age. (3432 views)
Tasted by KGudek on 6/3/2018 & rated 92 points: We like it with our spaghetti meal. (3612 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 4/9/2018 & rated 91 points: A deceptively youthful-looking, semi-opaque magenta in the glass - lightening just at the very edge. Initially tight and austere, this needed a good 90 minutes of air before it finally showed its best. Very expressive and pretty on the nose, offering powerful scents of crushed dark berries, Napa earth and exotic spice. Medium-to-full bodied and so silky in texture. Still shows a surprising abundance of ripe, delicious plum, blackberry and dark currant fruit with very good depth and focus. Not 'over-the-hill' at all. This has a lively acidity that gives it a nice, energetic lift, which perfectly complements its mouthwatering fruit. Finishes with good length, along with smooth tannins that are completely integrated. Appealingly fruity, polished and delicious. A very nice, mature Mondavi Oakville from an often overlooked vintage.

Tasted by johnnyo on 11/9/2017 flawed bottle: Brett (2252 views)
Tasted by Garfield on 7/12/2017 & rated 90 points: Slightly over the hill. (3533 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 2/16/2017: Agree with KCP that this wine has peaked; soft red fruits, low tannins. Enjoyable but won't improve. (4113 views)
Tasted by amateurwino on 12/25/2016 & rated 92 points: Balanced cab showing fruit with the sweetness and exuberance of its Napa origin, with lead pencil to give this a Left Bank Bordeaux feeling as well. Very good for the money. (4091 views)
Tasted by kcp on 12/6/2016 & rated 88 points: This one has peaked. Hoped it would have a longer curve. I need to drink up. (4074 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 11/24/2016 & rated 93 points: Sultry and sumptuous in style, this conveys a gorgeous bouquet of mountain berries, forest floor, mint, conifer, cedar, and elegant bottle age. Rich, deep, and long in the mouth, with melted tannins, a beautiful middle sweetness, and flavors that are generous, broad, and expansive. Seamless, complex, and sexy. 93++ (3739 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 10/16/2016: Much improved over the last year. The alcohol impression's backed off and the wine is balanced with comfortable maturing flavors. Probably about peak but should hold here for years. Would estimate's it's outer drinking about 2021. (2782 views)
Tasted by Capitolhack on 4/3/2016 & rated 92 points: Excellent wine that has taken well to aging. (3340 views)
Tasted by GalvezGuy on 3/6/2016 & rated 90 points: This has held up pretty well. Nice nose of sour cherry, currants, cedar, and spicy oak. On the palate, nice flavors of currants, cherries, hints of spicy oak. Balanced finish with decent grip. Really solid. (3163 views)
Tasted by kcp on 11/28/2015 & rated 89 points: It's not improving since earlier last year (and others before that). It's Mondavi, but feels a bit rustic, not like Mondavi Oakvilles I'm accustomed to. (3400 views)
Tasted by johnnyo on 11/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Great QPR! (3312 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 10/22/2015 & rated 88 points: Big rich and ripe Cal Cab. Youthfully dark reddish purple color and heady nose of black cherry, blackberry and chocolate. Best to decant--needs air to let the fruit and alcohol come into balance--smells and tastes a bit too potent right off the bat. (3296 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 12/25/2014 & rated 88 points: may be a litttle past its prime. a bit tight and acidic, never really opened up (3483 views)
Tasted by mhewitt on 11/8/2014 & rated 93 points: Drinking best ever right now. Unfortunately my last bottle of 13. I need to purchase this wine every year and sit on it. (3691 views)
Tasted by Rick.Bennett on 11/7/2014 & rated 92 points: 9 years in the bottle and i have to say it ages well, even though this is just the napa entry wine. surprisingly fresh, hidden tannins, great and dark fruit. No wonder I continue to spend $15 on this wine and set it down for years. Highly recommended. (3513 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 11/1/2014 & rated 92 points: I was a little concerned when I first opened it - thought it was past its prime, but it opened up very nicely to display a rich, full body. Great with Italian meats and fresh mozzarella (3209 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 10/26/2014: Reminded me why I don't like Napa Valley cabs: over-extracted, pruney, black-fruit dominant, unbalanced... dreadful (3099 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 9/19/2014 & rated 91 points: A little tight at the opening, but the tannins smooothed out very nicely. Full bodied, with a plum and dark fruit taste, medium to long finish. (2231 views)
Tasted by EvanRose on 8/2/2014 & rated 90 points: Smooth, black cherrry flavor, mediuym finish (2203 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
