Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 24 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by whits on 9/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Opaque with ruby rim, aromas of acai berry, blueberry and coffee grounds, opens with air but somewhat closed, tender, dry and rich, layered flavors of cherry, blueberry, chocolate bark, cola and rose, elegant, the finish feels like stony earth, structured to age well, gushes with flavor, hold a bit longer (1482 views)
Tasted by Super Dave AZ on 6/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Shut down somewhat, yet still had much to offer (1874 views)
Tasted by Jr11454 on 6/4/2023 & rated 94 points: This wine hit it out of the park. (1447 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 5/6/2023 & rated 96 points: PHMG WAG: The California Wine Club Tasting (The Lyon Club): This was a great bottle and a couple tasters had it as their WOTN. Fairly luxurious on the palate with blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, cocoa, underbrush, anise and leather notes that go on and on. Now-2030. (1802 views)
Tasted by Ticker tape guy on 12/26/2022 & rated 92 points: very nice gsm blend went well with roasted Guiana fowl (2109 views)
Tasted by CLUBLFE on 12/4/2022 & rated 100 points: 100 Points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another magical wine from this estate is the 2019 Côte à Côte, a blend of 34% each of Grenache and Mourvèdre, with the balance Syrah. Brought up in 29% new French oak, it boasts a dense purple color as well as incredible aromatics of blue fruits, smoked game, violets, black pepper, and spring flowers. One of those incredibly complex, nuanced wines that still brings depth and richness on the palate, it’s perfectly balanced, has ultra-fine tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It’s the finest vintage of Côte à Côte ever produced. Drink it over the coming 15+ years. (1631 views)
Tasted by Jr11454 on 11/25/2022 & rated 90 points: Fairly good gsm. However after a few days in frig started to get a little flat and fanic (1343 views)
Tasted by mikemaan on 11/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Perfect, nice, blend dry
34% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 32% Mourvèdre
14 months in 41% 1-year old French oak, 29% new French oak, 18% concrete, 12% amphors

Tasted by ***Monkeyboy*** on 8/30/2022 & rated 94 points: I am a big fan of GSMs and although this is probably too young to be drinking, I can't help myself.....
Tossed it into the decanter for 2 hours and poured it into our glasses
Deep beautiful ruby red aromas of dark fruit and plums
On the palate very pleasing and smooth mouth feel with a still lingering finish......I'm impressed with how good this is already....also sure it with get better with some age, but I don't know if I will wait too long....... (1257 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 8/20/2022 & rated 97 points: Great wine! Rich, delicious dark berry fruit with licorice flavors, long finish, best Cote-du-Cote in memory (1199 views)
Tasted by Super Dave AZ on 8/16/2022: Shut down somewhat. Did open up on day 2. Birthday wine (1300 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 8/11/2022: Three Tastings and a Meal in Paso Robles; 8/11/2022-8/13/2022 (Paso Robles, California): Ripe nose of dark fruit and pine needles that made me think Cabernet rather than a Rhône blend. Ripe, fairly unctuous feel that stops short of being heavy. Rich, naturally sweet blueberry fruit, chocolate, and bark. Good acidity gives some lift despite its overall size. Very good. (1473 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/22/2022: The hommage to Chateauneuf du Pape. Funny, darker fruit here, even though its less Syrah. And again, more tense than I thought on the palate as well. Joe notes, its how CdPs should taste. Concrete, co-ferments, and really, darn that is good. (1504 views)
Tasted by csimm on 6/9/2022: Party with some 100 pointers: This comes off as big and brash, with a mid-palate that wants to desperately go deeper but is stifled by the sense of booze and grainy grippiness. Crunchy blackberry seeds, chocolate cake batter, and heavy spice all create a heavier essence, one pushed by power and currently lacking some nuance. This has a lot to work out, and is clearly less suave in its current condition than the 2019 L’Aventure Estate Cuvee. As mentioned last year, this has a great deal of potential, but it’s going to take some serious massaging to smooth out some of the rough-and-tumble going on with this wine. Leave this alone for, heck I dunno, 8+ years? A similar showing to my last go-around with this wine, though I think this latest experience was even more crunchy. Many-a-folk liked this wine, but for those paying close attention and using any form of referential comparison to the other wines floating around, it was not without some carnage. Not rated this time because, well, you know... (3880 views)
Tasted by Boydmick on 12/29/2021: 100 points (2173 views)
Tasted by csimm on 12/2/2021 & rated 94 points: A big-boned GSM (34%, 32%, 34%) that comes in hard and fast with purple and black berries that are all octaned-up and smoking with a core that is chockfull with gushing midnight ripe fruit and meaty roast beef notes. Cracked black peppercorn is also able to wedge through the otherwise dense wall of formidable tannins and booze. It’s a bit of a bruiser in its current state but certainly with the stuffing to find a path worthy of revisiting in 7+ years. Finishes pretty hot right now, even with some Coravin taps throughout a two-week period and ultimately a few hours in the decanter. I say don’t touch these bottles short of 2030 really, but I know some of you compulsive BASE jumper carpe diem types just can’t keep your fingers off the trigger. I hear you my friends.

94+ points , with upside as long it can properly integrate all of its booming whiskey parts into one cohesive solution down the road. For now, you need a face shield and a man-bib if you wanna dive face-first into this king-sized carnival. (4483 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
