Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bacchus of knockholt on 12/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Ruby colour with a nose of sweet baked red and black cherries, cinnamon and spices. The palate is delicious with rich, morello cherry, currants and sultanas. Nice grip and very long. (241 views)
Tasted by Cheesybee on 12/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark red, dark cherries, some brooding gentle spice, very smooth, perfect with stronger blue cheeses. Mamma mia, it’s lusciously good. (155 views)
Tasted by Jdevans on 10/31/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 2 or so hours, this was very smooth. Low tannins, no burn, and dry enough that four of us saw off the bottle without regrets. Very nice. (381 views)
Tasted by trumpet60201 on 2/24/2020 & rated 87 points: Haven't had a lot of ports, so not sure what to expect here. A bit too sweet for my taste. Not sure I'd buy this again. (606 views)
Tasted by weiny on 6/10/2016 & rated 94 points: Voller, tieffruchtiger Port (1127 views)
Tasted by gelliott on 3/4/2010 & rated 89 points: Color: Very dark red fading to garnet and then ruby near the edge. Not quite inky, but very dark.
Nose: Sweet, dark cherries and lush, ripe raspberries struggle with some aromatic alcohol for dominance. A little dusty, and occasionally a whiff of a very sweet candy-like grape.
Palate: An initial hit of Welch's Grape Juice is rapidly overpowered by an intense cran-raspberry-like flavor. The tannins seem a little astringent, but are solid. Good acidity, but it has an edge to it that blends with the alcohol to form a hot feeling very early in the finish. A little on the drier side to me, but with good (medium) body weight.
Finish: The aforementioned hotness mellows evenly to a pleasant warmth. Early tannic grip fades fairly quickly. The fruits, mostly red raspberries, are slightly harsh with a bit of a green tone to them. The tail shows grape stem.

A little on the red fruit and dry side to me, but a fine Port. I think it has the backbone and acidity to last, but I'd check back regularly to make sure that the fruit doesn't disappear as it seems a little light. It might be worth another point or two if you enjoy primarily red fruits in a young Port and/or a Port on the dry side, but for me a respectable 89 points.

One further note: at only 6 years of age it needs a good 24-hour decant. On the first night with only 2-3 hours it was quite rough, and now at roughly +48 hours it is still holding very strong. Last night (+24 hours) was not significantly different than tonight, though it might have been every so slightly richer. (2430 views)
Tasted by theportguy on 12/15/2007 & rated 90 points: Dark cherry on the nose. Spice and full mouthfeel. Firm tannins on the mid-palate with a long finish. (560 views)
Tasted by obiscoito on 11/11/2007: Dark reddish maroon with hints of purple. Violets in a bouquet with blueberry garnishes, sitting on a bed of earth, this wine is well rounded on the nose. Sweet in the mouth with a black raspberry liquor quality to it that grips your tongue with fine tannins and well balanced acidity. Chocolate plays a part and mingles well with soft wood notes and allspice. I really think of chocolate with this wine and combine it with chokecherry syrup in my mind. Firm and well rounded, with good balance throughout. The first thing I noticed is the leather aromas and schistous minerality I noticed on the palate. I think this will be a nice wine for future consumption (2507 views)

Port Blend

Over a hundred varieties of grapes (castas) are sanctioned for port production, although only five (Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa, and Touriga Nacional) are widely cultivated and used.
