Tasted by Reblin on 11/5/2020 & rated 93 points: Drinking well. Ample fruit, rounded with vanilla and oak. Lengthy finish. A fair amount of sediment. (1002 views)
Tasted by stevenjstein on 1/27/2019: Well-balanced. Good fruit, but not overripe, with a decent acid backbone. Still holding up well and probably has a least a few good years left. (1710 views)
Tasted by Watcher900 on 1/26/2019 & rated 92 points: Excellent. Heavy floral notes, along with hints of vanilla. Tannins well integrated resulting in a very smooth wine. Shame it’s the last I have. (1545 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 2/18/2018 & rated 91 points: Some sediment on the bottle. Spicy and concentrated. Red fruit and integrated oak with vanilla. Full body and medium to long length and pleasant finish. Better than the previous bottle. (2033 views)
Tasted by Halfeel on 7/29/2017 & rated 92 points: Last bottle from the cellar - Still very good. (2483 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 7/28/2017 & rated 88 points: PnD let air for 2hrs. Nice fruit a bit elegant and perhaps thin. Did not live up to expectations and not nearly as good as the Havens Bourriquot that was consumed alongside it. (1719 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 6/12/2017 & rated 89 points: 4 years later, cork again broke on extraction with little effort. Wine was still solid, not much benefit from additional age though, a bit of oak showing, but no secondary or tertiary characteristics. Just kind of middle of the road, monolithic... (1520 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 6/10/2017 & rated 88 points: Enjoyed it, different than the norm. Dark fruit, saline. (1304 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/16/2017 & rated 88 points: Opens up very oaky and even bitter, but gets better after 2 hours of decanting and practically was phenomenal the next day! (1340 views)
Tasted by SCMeyer on 2/14/2016 & rated 90 points: I'm giving a slightly higher rating due to how interesting and unique this wine is. At first I thought it was disjointed, but after several hours i realized it's just the unique profile. Huge nose of eucalyptus, saline and dark fruit that carrys over to the palate with a high acid tart salinity masking some still considerable tannins. A big dark complex wine, but that salinity acidic component is dominant. I enjoyed it overall. (1904 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 2/11/2016 & rated 90 points: PnP. This had some considerable tannic weight that did soften with air. I liked it both early and late. Big black fruit, charcoal, chocolate. Somehow I expected this to be more old world, but I agree with D.T.: This is Napa. (1748 views)
Tasted by David_T on 1/29/2016 & rated 91 points: Aromas of black fruits (black currant/blackberry/black cherry), red licorice and a bit of herbs. The aromas match, and add a bit of red fruit and a fair amount of earth towards the finish. Classic Napa structure with medium acid, medium+ tannins and a medium finish. The structural elements are still integrating. Drinking well now with air, it may age a bit more and will likely least a minimum of 5 more years. (1685 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 4/12/2015 & rated 90 points: Huge nose on opening. Decanted for two hours and drank over the next two hours. Poured ruby with burnt orange hues. Significant bricking. This was slightly disjointed and may need more time. Black fruit with chocolate. Harsh mid palate with deeper finish but seemed old at the end. (2238 views)
Tasted by bkay on 12/21/2014 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well now. Decanted for 5 hours and really enjoyed it. Tannins well integrated and wine has decent finish (2434 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 2/1/2014 & rated 89 points: A large framed, but noticeably complex Merlot. Intriguing nose of seaweed, dark chocolate, herbs and blackberry. Dark fruited attack with significant weight. No hardness to the structure, rather smooth with integrated oak notes. Finishes with dark chocolate and black fruits. This is in a nice place now, though plenty of fruit to see it through to a more tertiary phase. The alcohol does come off as a bit high, though it is not a real distraction given the various points of interest in this wine. (2629 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 3/30/2013 & rated 89 points: Cork broke on extraction then second half pushed in when trying to salvage... had about 20 minutes to breathe prior to consumption.. initially wine had a pretty hollow mid palate with a short finish.. primarily red fruit flavors.. a bit of tannix grip... filled out a bit over time and improved, but did not live up to expections... was expecting a more complex, more old world styled wine.. this was kind of basic and a little lacking given the mid-palate and finish... I'm a bit unsure if it was a bit closed and needed more time, or if it was just mediocre... will wait a couple years on remaining bottle. (3496 views)
Tasted by ecola on 12/31/2012 & rated 91 points: Limited aromas of red fruit. Very smooth on the palate. Gentle flavors of plum, red cherry, and well integrated cedar. Gripping on the finish, but the tannins are not overpowering. Feels tight after an hour decant, should open up more in an hour or so. (3664 views)
Tasted by bablues on 11/30/2012 & rated 90 points: Should have read the other tasting notes before I opened it. Needed much more time than I had given it. At first, the nose was very dark, really dark. It had an exceptional taste but the finish fell off a cliff. After about an hour this opened up nicely where the nose was much more blue/red fruits and the finish was much stronger. Not sure the score actually represents the potential here.. (3236 views)
Tasted by pkatz on 10/29/2012 & rated 92 points: I was apprehensive reading some of the notes, but this is a very good wine. Dark fruit flavors, great body, big tannins that integrate well, nice complexity with lots of interesting subtle flavors to go along the the serious fruit. Excellent with steak. You can tell the pedigree. (3120 views)
Tasted by AMM3RD on 4/9/2012: Popped and poured, should have decanted. Was wonderful with prime rib roast. Dark fruits in perfect balance. Calling all old world fans, focus item. I'm looking for more...AM (3294 views)
Tasted by njc2o on 3/31/2012 & rated 86 points: Saturday Afternoon Tasting (German Village, Columbus, Ohio): color: dark, rich, youthful cabernet color. nose: cassis liqueur, sweet oak, blueberry. palate: tannic. oaked. fruit character hidden by youthful oak and tannic character. toasted herb and scorched earth. somewhat savory. drinkable now, but needs more time. decent character and weight. (3159 views)
Tasted by jfaulk on 2/3/2012 & rated 79 points: Not much going on. Disjointed with no complexity. (2631 views)
Tasted by gajalaa on 1/13/2012 & rated 87 points: Did not decant and I think it needed to be, dark red color, oak and floral on nose, lush plums with some leather and tobacco on palate, good length. Not worth the $35 I paid. (2537 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 12/22/2011 & rated 82 points: nose - floral and herbal
mouth - thin, yet tannic, fleeting berry fruit. in a dumb phase or perhaps an off bottle. (2763 views)
Tasted by Jack O'Brien on 12/5/2011 & rated 89 points: Good bottle - an assault of oak on the nose with plumy Merlot flavors and eucalyptus notes. Very lush on the palate with good depth and length. Nice wine but wouldn't buy again at the price point. (3206 views)

2005 Hyde De Villaine Belle Cousine Hyde Vineyard

VINTAGE NOTES
The 2005 vintage in Los Carneros was cool and slow paced. After an early budbreak in the middle of March, Hyde Vineyards experienced wet weather in May and June. Summer also consisted of cool weather thanks to the San Pablo Bay fog influence. From maturation through harvest, days were sunny and mild, allowing Merlot and Cabernet flavors to develop gradually with pronounced acidity and expressive complexity.
WINEMAKER NOTES
The nose features the restraint of the old world contrasted by the opulence of the new world. Showcased are complex aromas of sweet spice and intense black fruit that evolve into black pepper and red fruit with time. Ultimately, a balanced wine with elegant, soft tannins countered with a backbone of fresh, natural acidity. The purity of the fruit lingers on the finish and makes the wine a perfect match for rack of lamb or any dry rubbed steak. The 2005 Belle Cousine favors decanting an hour before serving. It should continue to improve for 10 to 15 years.
- Stéphane Vivier, Winemaker, HdV Wines

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.
