Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 8/28/2023: This would make an excellent restaurant wine and reminds me of Cupano’s “vino rosso di tavola”- the perfect way to access that balsamic depth of sangiovese maturity in a relatively young bottling. There should be a touch (no more than 15%) of cab Sauv and petit Verdot to add body and depth here. I like it- a gluggable easy going but complex spicy and interesting wine. Bravo Casanova Di Neri for creating this “sweet spot” PQR wine that doesn’t need decanting, opening early or long cellaring to deliver the pleasure expected from Montalcino. (512 views)
Tasted by jjhsom on 8/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Fuller bodied and more blue/black fruits than most Sangiovese plus a little less acidic. I suspect it has some bordeaux varietals in it. Enjoyable before dinner and w/pizza. Good value. (469 views)
Tasted by 64cards@bellsouth.net on 4/28/2023 & rated 91 points: Aromas of black fruit. A bit earthy. Nice balance with medium tannins and acid. Opens up nicely. Very pleasant wine. Could have aged longer. (580 views)
Tasted by F_&_M on 3/11/2023 & rated 90 points: Really enjoyable! Interesting (which is high paise from me!), still young, with many years to go. (588 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 2/28/2023: And with some gumption still on day four. (812 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 2/23/2023: Raspberry and plum fruit palate. Fresh and medium tannin. A light barn-ish aroma that blows off. A structured little number. (333 views)
Tasted by davidandrose on 2/4/2023 & rated 92 points: Served w Rose's pizza class. This definitely opened during the 2 hours of air provided, but could still stand for more time. While 90% Sangiovese, the syrah and cabernet sauv components are evident, adding weight and depth. Could easily work with red meat; after 5 hours this has softened considerably and is really solid. Bumps from a 91 to 92. (316 views)
Tasted by ptconner on 1/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Great value wine. Cherry notes. Ready to drink now. PNP with evolution over about 30 minutes. Goes great with pizza. (270 views)
Tasted by FoodAndDINK on 10/31/2022 & rated 90 points: Like a baby Brunello; nice tart cherry, maybe lacking a little in acidity and finish. Evolved nicely with 30 minutes in the glass. Pretty solid for $20. (331 views)
Tasted by RussK on 10/7/2022 & rated 90 points: Russk. At the WW Tuscan Tasting. 90- (415 views)
Tasted by Madera16 on 2/2/2022: Yum, another great vintage. There’s an earthy terpinic freshness — cineole, borneol, etc — that adds lift and character to the nose. Rich palate with high extract and good grip, not too strong, very front of tongue. Bordeaux overtones. Great PQR at $18. (620 views)

Casanova di Neri

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

The Casanova di Neri farm began in 1971 when Giovanni Neri bought a large estate within the territory of Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for and purchasing of land which they believe to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. The result is that today they have about 36 hectares of vineyards divided between four quite distinct areas: il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, le Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, il Cerretalto and il Fiesole near the farmhouse of the same name facing Montalcino. Recent accolades include a perfect WS 100-point score for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and WS Wine of the Year honors for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova.

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
