Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 250 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by danstrings on 2/18/2024 & rated 93 points: Showing wonderfully at almost 20 years old - super youthful, inky dark and loaded with unctuous glaceed dark fruit. Good earth and a touch o' brett/funk - just a touch. Lovely. (1135 views)
Tasted by Chuck Miller on 2/1/2024: Disappointing. Tannic AF, bitter, lacking any of the charm that Charvin can display. (871 views)
Tasted by cvst on 1/3/2024 & rated 93 points: Double decant and still needed a few hours to blow off some dust. Beautiful bouquet of red and some dark fruit, with pronounced herbaceous notes such as garrigue, some spice, earthy notes such as old leather, barnyard and soil and also with some minerality as in schist or iron. Elegant expression with some tertiary development. Very delicious. Recommend to enjoy with food (1079 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 11/4/2023: In the same mold as the 2004. Light, stony, earthy, mint notes. It seems to be advancing just a little faster than the 2004 right now, so this is a good time to drink it. (1426 views)
Tasted by Esmags7 on 10/13/2023 & rated 91 points: My last one (and the best of the few I bought). Nearing the end of its optimal window. (1377 views)
Tasted by Esmags7 on 7/13/2023: Bottle was not in tip top shape - but still very nice. Well kept bottles should still have several more years left. (1360 views)
Tasted by SirFred on 7/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Auction purchase. 2cm fill. Advanced but nonetheless on point. Beautiful floral nose with pepper and cherry preserve. Lush on entry and suave throughout with sweet red fruits, crushed pepper and vanillin to compliment the mélange of spices and medicinal herbs. A substantial finish with lingering smoky red fruits. Well kept bottles should easily cruise another decade, but definitely in a good drinking window. (1378 views)
Tasted by finewinebuff57 on 4/16/2023 & rated 92 points: I agree with other recent notes here. This is a beautiful Charvin in its prime. Nonetheless no rush. (1564 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/7/2023: Absolutely stunning once again. Perfumed, floral, airy fruit, balm of Provençal herbs, spices, impeccable balance and, as usual, great purity of fruit and STGT qualities. The is drinking in its prime window now, I think, but there’s many years left in the tank. Bravo, Laurent. (1607 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 2/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Ouvert la veille et bouchon remis dessus.
Un nez de viande grillée, de confiture de fraises.
Corps moyen, une belle texture, avec des arômes classiques de kirsch. Un vin épanoui et savoureux, à son sommet. 93 pts (1639 views)
Tasted by cvst on 12/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Rustic and herbal nose with tones of red berries. Decanted for couple of hours, which allowed the fruit to come forward. Ripe raspberry, red cherry and red currant with garrigue, crushed rock and some iron on the palate. Spicy, herbal and herbaceous. Present acidity, tannins and alcohol (14.5% but no heat), well integrated, well balanced and very delicious overall. (1316 views)
Tasted by Esmags7 on 12/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Significantly better bottle than the first two of these I drank from my cellar (all purchased via auction); luck of the draw I suppose. I wouldn't have pursued more but this bottle has changed my mind.

Drinking very clean / great texture, well integrated. A little more pepper and mineral coming through than cherry flavor. Lacks the incredible finish that I've had with the 2001 and 2003 vintages, which prevents me from scoring it higher, but excellent all the same. (1414 views)
94-95 pts (1635 views)
Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 10/27/2022 & rated 93 points: This medium-to-deep garnet Châteauneuf was decanted off of its sediment and allowed two hours in decanter prior to tasting over the ensuing three hours. Fully expressive upon initiation of sampling, it offers a layered package of dark bramble fruits, licorice, Provençal herbs, loamy earth and crushed rocks. Fresh, medium-to-full-bodied and with nicely integrated alcohol (14.5%), it stays solid in the middle and finishes long. This is a gorgeous Châteauneuf with fully resolved tannins and velvety textures. It is definitely at its apogee but well-cellared bottles should retain enough stuffing to provide enjoyement for another 2-3 years. Drink now-2025. (1311 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 7/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Simply stunning nose that I found more expressive than on my palette. Good balance and quite elegant. I don’t see upside to holding this much longer (1458 views)
Tasted by wizlb on 6/17/2022 & rated 94 points: This 2006 Charvin CDP wine 🍷 is a wonderful Bouquet that offers drinkers a Burgundist style of a drop.
If we can only open a 16-year-old bottle of wine like this every time.. well find and enjoy! (1567 views)
Tasted by Larewski on 1/11/2022 & rated 92 points: Gorgeous. More feminine than some CnPs, but no brett on the nose or bricking. PnPd for a glass of wild blueberry, slight French oak, graphite. Beautifully balanced. In an optimal drinking window. (1733 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 11/12/2021 & rated 93 points: This bottle has a little Brett and barnyard. Still has vibrant red fruit with provincial spice box notes. Maybe not as deep as prior bottles but much more elegant and balanced than a recent ‘06 Beaucastel. (1928 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 9/6/2021: Tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red
-vinyl subtle red fruits
-med acidity, med/med+ weight quite concentrated subtle dark fruit molasses, med- tannins give some chewy texture to the long finish that has only a whisper of heat
-subtle dark fruited very pleasant mature CdP (2006 views)
Tasted by afot on 5/30/2021: Dark grenate, limpid, no bricking. 3h decant. Didn‘t evolve much afterwards, maybe the fruit got more to the background. Full-bodied, very soft extraction, intense tannins. Crazy aromatics of red fruits, herbal garrigue, smoke and earth. Some drying finish maybe stands for the only negative aspect. Really enjoyed this classical chateauneuf with the distinctive stem character. Drink now until 2040 (1995 views)
Tasted by Esmags7 on 5/6/2021 & rated 89 points: Put through the vinturi into the decanter and began drinking ~75 minutes later. Took another hour before it hit its stride, although I might give my next bottle more time. Edit: definitely giving my next bottle a good deal more time.

Perfectly good, but neither particularly interesting or exciting - the '01 and '03 Charvins are some of my favorite CdP's.

Still has plenty of acid and a long finish, but a lot of the other notes have faded. Get tobacco and a certain amount of minerality, but very, very little fruit.

Given the structure, still has many years left, just not sure I'm excited if it fades further. (1873 views)
Tasted by Enfant sauvage on 4/2/2021: This was nice but not fireworks. Sadly, I find myself feeling that way about Charvin more frequently these days than in the past. Me or the wines? Anyway, I agree with others, this still has some life in front of it. Given the relative simplicity of my bottle, if I had more '06s, which I don't, I'd roll the dice and hold them hoping for more secondary/tertiary development. (1761 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 3/27/2021 & rated 91 points: In the decanter for 3 hours and drunk over the next 3 hours. Violets, flowers, leather. Well balanced, fine, dry chalky tannins, medium + to long finish. Big wine, I did enjoy though. Holding up very well, years ahead. (1550 views)
Tasted by Redwineobsessed on 3/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Great nose. Flowers. Fruit. Big. Quality tannin structure. Balanced, in harmony and long finish. 6 hours in decanter. Cracker with at least a decade of good drinking ahead of it. (1510 views)

(Charvin) Charvin Dear Friends, This wine has been very difficult to source and it seems the US allocation has been cut by 50-70% in 2006 - why, I'm not sure? I finally found a parcel at a great price and it is on the way to us. I have a soft spot for the wines of Charvin as they seem to age in a timeless and lovely fashion - Rayas comparisons or not, they often require 6-10 years of bottle age to blossom but the wait is more than worth it. The 2006 is a gorgeous effort from Laurent Charvin - it reminds me of a combination of the 1990 and 1999 (if that is possible) and it is still priced at the lower end for the top-tier wines (2006 Clos des Papes is hovering around $100 and it is not better than this - it's just more extracted and more alcoholic): VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for ageing potential and for support of one of the good guys in the wine trade. This parcel arrives with impeccable provenance directly from the source 2006 Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf du Pape It will ship during the first available shipping window in the fall season (weather permitting). Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone7180

OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Located in the northwest part of the appellation, with vines chiefly in Cabrieres, Maucoil, and Mont Redon, Laurent Charvin makes one of the most elegant and seamless Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Opting to produce a single cuvée, the winemaking here is staunchly traditional, with no destemming and fermentation and aging occurring all in concrete tanks for 21 months, bottled unfiltered. This is a wine that can age 20 years from any vintage as well as be accessible quite young with just a little breathing.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
