Tasted by KPB on 5/3/2024 & rated 95 points: The 2009 is finally in its zone! If you don’t know Charvin, try one of these.

Medium dark in color, with a lot going on in the exuberant nose : sweetly ripe raspberries, crème caramel, lavender, vanilla. Soft, rich, palate-staining. Hard to resist going back to the glass… the endless finish makes it even harder : the wine seems to linger for ten minutes! Awesome.

PS: eventually, reduced this from 97 to 95. With food, it seemed off-scale amazing. But after dinner by itself, I started to feel that the back half of the finish lacks stuffing and comes off as a little hollow. Not a flaw, but not as close to perfect as I was initially thinking. FWIW we paired it with butternut squash-stuffed ravioli in a sage and butter sauce and zucchini poached in white wines, shallots melted in butter, and a little “better than bouillon”, the roast chicken one.  Tasted by pbaek on 4/14/2024: Ripe, plummy cherry fruit. Rich and spicy, great purity. Lavender and thyme. Great expression of terroir, as always, from Charvin. Many years left. (408 views)
Tasted by cugel_saga on 1/13/2024 & rated 93 points: A fine nose that suggests plummy fruit and a hot hillside.
On the palate the fruit is muted but there are great notes of garrigue that are interesting and long on the finish.
This really settles well and improves over several hours. It has depth, layers, dark beauty, fine tannins and lots to give.
Ace. (1104 views)
Tasted by Jerseyjudge on 1/2/2024 & rated 93 points: Pnp. Medicinal red fruit to start giving way to taut, candied berries and spice. Consistent. Continues to be in an ideal phase and should be for a good while. (1222 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 12/24/2023 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured - earthy and tight. (1045 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 10/13/2023 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet color with minimal signs of aging. This was immediately highly aromatic after opening with rich smells of blackberry, sage, thyme, and cassis. After a brief period of oxygen exposure, it evolved from slightly hard to a soft plush wine. It is still youthful but a great pleasure to drink at present. (1437 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/29/2023 & rated 91 points: CdP blind tasting. Illuminating evening, while there were some nice and complex wines there were also quite a few misses. Issues revolved around either not aging well and becoming pruney, oxidative with cooked fruit aromas or just being too heavy/sweet/alcoholic. TN: Nose of farmyard and brett, complex and masculine. The palate is precise and has very good acidity, they managed the warm vintage very well here. (1899 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 6/2/2023 & rated 88 points: Deep garnet color. Enticing nose of candied red cherries. After an appealing start, the initial taste and feel on the palate are disappointing. The wine is a little disjointed with an over-ripeness combined with too much oak. I have been a long term fan of this wine and have a vertical in my cellar but this bottle was disappointing. I am going to wait on trying the next one to give it a little more aging as it may improve (said hopefully). (1530 views)
Tasted by Owmyeye99 on 12/25/2022 & rated 90 points: Ready to drink now. Decanted for an hour. Still a little tight at the 3hr mark it really started to open up. This can still sit for a little bit with no problem (1843 views)
Tasted by maxima on 10/30/2022 flawed bottle: Bouchonnée! (2573 views)
Tasted by ludwigbpm on 10/29/2022 & rated 94 points: Nez classique , garrigues, des épices.
Tasted by redknife on 10/27/2022 & rated 89 points: Opened 90 mins before dinner with the Thursday group at Christys
When I first poured into the decanter the nose was beautiful grenache, white pepper and meaty aromas
Palate was a bit tight, dry fruit and very strong tannins
I think wine is closed now Or needed more time on the decanter go open up (1544 views)
Tasted by Jerseyjudge on 10/18/2022 & rated 94 points: In a great place. Opened 2 hours before pouring. No decant. A bit medicinal at first. Nice backbone and great development in the glass. Red fruit and spice with a hint of apricot and saline. Paired great with grilled lamb and an octopus salad. I would think it has plenty of years ahead but no need to wait! (1339 views)
Tasted by atilla on 9/29/2022 & rated 88 points: A little rough. Don't decant. Open hour before. (1319 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 8/22/2022: Slightly darker fruit than usual for Charvin but still in the elegant mold with great purity and finesse. Getting better with age, there’s now some tertiary notes underneath the red fruit. Very long and deep. Great effort given the vintage…. (1568 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 7/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Ouvert à midi pour le soir.
Superbe vin! Nez de kirsch et de garrigue. Bouche de puissance moyenne, avec une belle texture, une longueur fort respectable et une complexité aromatique impressionnante. Excellent. 93 pts (1776 views)
Tasted by Twowinechicks on 6/9/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby, subdued nose that opens to reveal dark fruit and garrigue, and rich smooth mouthfeel, more graceful than expected for a wine with ~15% alcohol (although that was the style then). Tasted in conjunction with Janasse Chaupin CdP, same vintage, at a send-off dinner for friends who were departing on a trip to France. The Chaupin had more fruit and was more elegant (not a surprise), and the Charvin was more savory and equally delicious. (1687 views)
Tasted by tphilca on 5/13/2022 & rated 91 points: Nicely balanced with plenty of life left. Probably some upside remaining with another 3-5 years under its belt. It's a little bit hot for my palette but I can still enjoy for the rich fruit and complex flavors. Seems like enough acidity to keep it balanced enough to really enjoy. (1754 views)
Tasted by azzah on 5/9/2022 & rated 93 points: Such good drinking now. Florals, red fruits, darker berries, anise, herbs. Lots of complexity and depth of flavour - its big but not overly heavy. A very good bottle of CdP. (1715 views)
Tasted by tloir on 3/22/2022 & rated 87 points: Arômes de prunes, peu de complexité. Bouche présentant un volume moyen, déséquilibrée par un alcool excessif (15°). Peu de plaisir. (1947 views)
Tasted by ludwigbpm on 2/14/2022 & rated 93 points: Sans notes (2102 views)
Tasted by winepog on 12/6/2021: I know this was good, but I was too distracted to remember anything specific, let along to compose a score. It was good. Cheers! (2107 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 11/13/2021 & rated 90 points: Good fill and healthy corkage with no seepage beyond 5 mm. Restrained nose initially but gradually showed blackberries and later black cherries along with hints of savory herbs. Smooth tannins but not very concentrated or long. Drinking well right now. Doubt that it will improve further but also does not appear to be fading yet. (2109 views)
Tasted by maxima on 10/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Super beau, sur les herbes et les épices
avec des beaux fruits murs, c`est complexe,
soyeux et bien équilibré.
Belle longueur en finale.

OWNERS & HISTORY:
The Domaine Charvin was founded by Guillaume Charvin in 1851. 16 years later, in 1867, the entire planting area was destroyed by vine fretters. But William Charvin and other members of the family didn’t let this get them down, and replanted the soil. At this time, the family name also changed from Charavin to Charvin – due to an administrative error. The winery is situated in the northwestern part of the region next to Château Maucoil.

The family began its work with four hectares of land in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The first bottling at the winery – intended only for private consumption – took place in 1951. During the following years, most of the wine was sold to dealers. In 1990, with Laurent Charvin, the sixth generation took over the family business. During his first year, he produced some 8,000 bottles of wine. The remainder was still sold to local dealers. Since 1990, the amount of wine produced has increased each year. At the moment, the winery has 8.2 hectares of land in three different lieux-dits: Maucoil, l’Arnesque, and Cabrières, all in the northwestern part of the region. The soil there consists mainly of limestone and loam, and is more or less covered with stones. The average age of the grapevines is 45 years. Laurent Charvin loves to philosophize about nature, adjusting himself to whatever happens outside: to the weather, the soil, and the grapevines. He explains:

“I’m not sure whether the quality of the wines increases with passion; the potentials of the soil and of the grapevines are more important. You have to comprehend what you have. Besides, you should never try to copy your neighbors, because each parcel has unique material with its own DNA.”

GEOGRAPHY & VARIETALS:
Only a single red Châteauneuf-du-Pape is produced; it consists of 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% Vaccarèse. The wine is made in a very traditional manner. No stems are removed; after sorting, the grapes are lightly pounded and then poured into fermentation tanks made of concrete. The wine is recirculated daily during alcoholic fermentation and maceration, which last around three weeks. Laurent is no friend of excessive extraction of the wine, but rather aims at more balance, freshness, and structure in the wine. Experimentally, and always striving to maintain optimum freshness, Laurent uses concrete tanks exclusively during the ripening process lasting eighteen months. All of the wine is bottled without interruption and without filtering, in order to avoid even the slightest differences from one bottle to the next. Annual production amounts to around 30,000 bottles.

"It would be no problem for me to make two cuvées: a powerful one and a light one. But I am convinced that only a mixture of the two will make a wine the way a wine should be, and the way I like it!"
- Laurent Charvin

Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Located in the northwest part of the appellation, with vines chiefly in Cabrieres, Maucoil, and Mont Redon, Laurent Charvin makes one of the most elegant and seamless Châteauneuf-du-Papes. Opting to produce a single cuvée, the winemaking here is staunchly traditional, with no destemming and fermentation and aging occurring all in concrete tanks for 21 months, bottled unfiltered. This is a wine that can age 20 years from any vintage as well as be accessible quite young with just a little breathing.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
