Tasted by Bob & Sue Atlanta on 12/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Alive and kicking! If it tasted blind, I would’ve guessed 2017. This is an outstanding $20 bottle of Syrah from 2006. We’ll done Carlisle! (348 views)
Tasted by oaxaca90049 on 8/31/2021: Drinking beautifully. In our experience Carlisle's age far past their supposed drink by date. A joy to drink. (601 views)
Tasted by dmwilsondvm on 8/5/2019 & rated 95 points: Wow! Still prime! Dark plum, chocolate undertones. Bravo! (1138 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 1/31/2019 & rated 88 points: 2006 Retrospective (Central Coast, CA): Dense, monolithic and a bit lifeless. Notes of kirsch and mocha. Surely not still developing at this age, so an unsatisfying wine for me. (1317 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/29/2018 & rated 88 points: Full nose of smoke, meat and sweet black fruit. The palate is concentrated with smoky black fruit and spice. For the ripeness/richness, this has excellent freshness and precision. Aging glacially. I don't drink much Cali Syrah anymore, but this is quite nice, especially for the tariff. (1247 views)
Tasted by Mscruggs on 1/16/2018 & rated 92 points: CT window shows drink by 2015 but this wine is still going strong in my opinion. Dark briary fruit and road tar on a long finish. This wine needs a rack of smoky baby backs for pairing!! (1094 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 7/19/2017 & rated 92 points: lovely. no sign of aging - very young. showing just a bit of secondary and mainly primary fruit notes. big black fruit. mid is ripe but with great acidity. serious. long finish. whats not to love? (1306 views)
Tasted by tim_c on 11/25/2016 & rated 93 points: One of my favorite wines of the year. Drinks like a new release, classic Carlisle syrah, deep core of dark fruit, plush texture, plenty of acidity. Balanced, seamless wine. No signs of slowing down. (1476 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 9/5/2016 & rated 93 points: My last bottle of this wine and perhaps my best. IMHO this wine is at peak now. Even though the CT drinking window shows 2016 as the end date I would give this at least a couple of more years at peak. (1558 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 7/14/2015 & rated 91 points: A larger-scaled RRV syrah that 110% scratched my itch on this evening. Full nose of black fruit, toasted herbs, smoked meat and creosote. Palate has concentrated black fruits with just enough acidity to keep it fresh and in balance. Alcohol is well contained within the frame of the wine. Peppery, smoky finish. Great value and is aging gracefully. (2075 views)
Tasted by oenophilemoose on 5/18/2014 & rated 91 points: Dark garnet color, unmistakable Russian River notes on nose and palate accompanied by ripe dark concentrated fruit followed by a lengthy and pleasing finish. The 15.9% alcohol is undetectable. (3120 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 3/24/2014 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 30 min. and drank over next 3+ hours. Still big, dense and dark. Opaque without bright light, which shows brick/purple. Massive fruit but not overly sweet. Plum and anise, but big spice and hints cherries and (lesser) raspberries on the long finish. This wine has evolved since my last bottle 2.5 yrs. ago. More time -- at this rate several more years -- might do even more, but this is my last bottle so I'll never know. (2719 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 2/10/2014 & rated 92 points: Brought this to a dinner with non-Geeks. My second and last bottle. Just beautiful. Very impressive. My friends loved it. Drinkable on pop n pour. Dark inky color. Dare I say drink or hold! (2499 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 12/10/2013 & rated 93 points: Awesome juice (2419 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 10/10/2013 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour - note after 2 hours. Savory nose of meat and peppers. Black and blue fruit, licorice and smoke on the palate. Nice wine and good QPR. (2123 views)
Tasted by Bellissimo on 3/2/2013: PnP, served over 3 hours. Inky dark with a little translucence around the edges. Dark fruit, soy, oak, wax on the nose. Taste shows ripe brambly dark fruits, sandalwood, and a smoky charcoal. The longer this sits open the more I notice the 15.9% alcohol on the spicy finish. (1730 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 12/30/2012 & rated 91 points: Gave this some air and served at a holiday party. A real crowd pleaser and wotn. (1823 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 11/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Huge nose of brambly fresh blackberry puree; very intense with a slight flavored pepper and mossy mierality aspect; mouth of concentrated, dense, with again layers of wild blackberry, medium tannins, a touch hot, but very well balanced for such concentration--clean finish make this fantastic. (1933 views)
Tasted by daniel.jay on 9/2/2012 & rated 90 points: This was just ok on day 1 - out of balance, alcoholic. Really came around on day 2 and 3 as fruit emerged. A little on sweet side, but balanced with nice spice. (2076 views)
Tasted by greenblanket on 5/26/2012: Found hiding in the Zinfandel racks and immediately brought up to go with some experimental barbecue. It offered a full suite of classic old world Syrah flavors (olives, smoked meat, blackberry, florals, charcoal, asphalt) on a big ripe new world frame. A remarkable Cali Syrah and a delightful match with the pasilla glazed lamb. (2312 views)
Tasted by dhammer53 on 3/22/2012 & rated 91 points: This was the table wine at my sons wedding for my non-geek friends. Chewy and delicious. Inky color. No rush to drink. As father of the groom, there's limited notes. (2352 views)
Tasted by alpha_ori on 2/25/2012 & rated 93 points: This is exactly what I drink Carlisle for. Licorice, tar, ripe black fruit, smooth tannin, a little sweet oak. I could drink this all night long. This is a mailing list I really want to be on. (1973 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 12/20/2011 & rated 92 points: 15.9% ABV. Nearly opaque dark garnet in the glass. I really like the place this wine is in right now. Sexy, slightly floral, nose with underlying black fruit and a subdued nuance of black olive. Full bodied with balanced black fruit. Good length. (2396 views)
Tasted by lpollack on 12/10/2011 & rated 90 points: Dark purple color. Nose of black fruits. Good concentration. Tastes of black rasberries, licorice and spices. White pepper on the finish. (2709 views)
Tasted by ljl203 on 11/5/2011 & rated 89 points: Purple core, tar, berries, leather and twigs. (2266 views)

2006 Carlisle Syrah Russian River Valley

Winery Note:

2006 Russian River Valley Syrah

Like its older sibling, the 2005 Russian River Valley Syrah, this wine comes entirely from the Parsons' Ranch on Wood Road. "Wood Road?" you say. Isn't that old-vine zin country? Indeed it is but syrah excels in this cool climate as well. Composed of 68% clone 174 and 32% clone 877, 25% whole cluster was employed to accentuate the spice and black olive qualities of the fruit. Thirty-three percent new French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Dark ruby-garnet. Gorgeous aromas of blackberry, crème de cassis, and spring flowers meet the nose. On the palate, flavors of blackberry and herbs. Full-bodied but with refreshing tannins on the finish. While enjoyable now, additional complexity should develop with bottle age. Drink 2009-2016.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
