Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jz-drinks-wine on 7/30/2023 & rated 87 points: Elegant body, notes of prunes, dry herbs, dry flowers, chocolate and leather. Fine soft tannins and good acidity. Unfortunately it has just surpassed its best drinking window as it’s almost all tertiary and it’s starting to lose intensity. (426 views)
Tasted by Somm Troy S on 6/25/2022 & rated 97 points: The technical and artful abilities behind the winemaking for this wine is astounding, how Cathy Corison is able to produce such a wine of place and ethereal majesty in a climate and winemaking culture like what's found in Napa is beyond me, refreshing, and awesome. The 1997 vintage doesn't hurt, it being such a highly rated year. This Cab bristles with quality and nuance, tertiary flavors for days, but the core fruit remains persistent and the structure is glorious, I mean it's just impeccably balanced and alive even after 25 years, and it can keep going too, that's the thing. A wine for gatherings, community, *really* good food, and your awe complex. Enjoy, friends. (312 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 1/31/2019: Sorry to be repetitive. Actually exactly same as our notes from 10/9/16. Still a classy wine. (2750 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 2/16/2018: Actually exactly same as our notes from 10/9/16. Still a classy wine. (2966 views)
Tasted by doctornoah on 8/7/2017 & rated 92 points: Elegant, especially for the year. Wood notes resolved but part of the picture. Cassis and earth. I find a lot of 97's roasted and the reputation of the year more to die with Parkerized excess than anything else, but this comes in at 13.2% and drinks like a time machine rescue from 70's Napa. (3684 views)
Tasted by Schwarzer Hund on 10/9/2016: dark red color, earthy cassis, raspberry aromas and fruit on palate, it is in perfect balance now and will be in a great drinking window for several years I think. A very classy wine. (3849 views)
Tasted by Schaeferr on 1/3/2016 & rated 93 points: Don't have too good of notes for this, but suffice it to say this was fantastic. We let the wine breathe in the bottle after shouldering for several hours. This wine is not over the hill by any stretch of the imagination. It's got years left. (4412 views)
Tasted by NiklasW on 3/6/2015: Wine tasting at Paul B's place (Cambridge, UK): Tasted double blind. A good contrast to the previous wine, very Old World in style, aged and elegant. Cassis is there, but elegant, good tannins, a very enjoyable wine. (4351 views)
Tasted by lestergibo on 1/23/2015 & rated 93 points: Great herbal notes. As you would expect, nothing like today's fruit bombs. Wonderful wine! (3519 views)
Tasted by MLR on 9/14/2014 & rated 88 points: Nice bUt done. (3063 views)
Tasted by klezman on 8/6/2013: Per rpm, this one was cut down before its time. However, it was delicious, right at PnP. It shut down after a while getting some air in the bottle but was beginning to show its stuff later on. Hold the next for 2017+ (4847 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 5/18/2013 & rated 92 points: Bearserkerfest Day 2- Domaine Wine Storage (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): Nose: Nice and stylish nose with plush tones of black currants, dark red cherries, dark red berries, and some cedary tones as well. There is nice depth to this as well with all of the tones being well in balance.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with silky tannins and medium acidity. The feel is very polished with well balanced tones of black currants, dark red cherries, dark red berries, and some spice tones.

Overall: This was drinking beautifully. It's a very well balanced and mature cab that is showing very well. There is some real nice style and polish to this right now and it feels like it can hold for a while. (4640 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 5/5/2013 & rated 91 points: Last bottle, consistent with prior notes. balanced and elegant wine. If you have it drink up (3292 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 1/1/2013 & rated 90 points: same as prior notes. nice fruit, elegant and restrained. Late in its drinking life, but still very nice wine. (3961 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 10/30/2012 & rated 90 points: Had this one with a cassoulet we made for our post hurricane Sandy dinner. Consistent with prior notes. Smooth, restrained, elegant wine (3602 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/30/2012 & rated 89 points: Same as prior note, left half a bottle for the second day. Seemed more ripe and fruit forward on day 2 (as this style goes). This one slightly better than prio r bottles, drinking very nicely (2559 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/22/2012 & rated 88 points: did this one on back to back nights, given how light it was I thought we would see if paired OK with scallops and Salmon. Pairing not bad (it was an experiment), works well with Salmon and complimented a tomato couscous perfectly. Nice thing about Cathy Corison's wines is how delicate they are vs traditional Calif Cabs. Only about 13% ABV, tastes/feels like it could be lighter. Opens up different pairing possibilities with Cabs.

I know this is old, and probably past its prime, but still nice wine. the Kronos vineyards from Corison are a notch up from this, great wines if you have them (2365 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/21/2012 & rated 88 points: Bottle had more in than prior tasters. Definitely old, but still very pleasant. 97 Calif Cabs in my cellar all have life left in them.

Restrained, Bordeaux like for a calif cabernet. Smooth, light mouthfeel, medium finish. tannins are fully resolved. Lighter nose, prior taster noted licorice which is definitely in the nose.

Cherry and some earth, starts opening after about 20 minutes (2263 views)
Tasted by cdwinell on 6/11/2012 & rated 92 points: Very good on the palette. Very smooth. Good alcohol and good oak!

Another year or two at the most. (2092 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 6/10/2012 & rated 89 points: Garnet. Nose of a middling Cab with some age. Taste was a cab with age, red fruits, fresh herbs. Nice. (2029 views)
Tasted by jmprusko on 3/11/2012 & rated 92 points: last few CA cab 97's I've had have all been fresh and drinking well (2258 views)
Tasted by Tudz Drkl on 1/22/2011 & rated 90 points: Very intense preserved fruit, eucalyptus, and licorice on the nose to begin. Later, musty attic and dust. Tannins were soft and acidity was in balance. Fruit was predominantly dark. (3295 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 12/18/2010 & rated 87 points: Nice purple color and a muted dark fruit nose. Medium bodied, it lacked the depth of flavors I've become used to from Corison Cabs, lacked sufficient acid, and had a slight Balsemic note. This bottle was definitely past its peak, although its still drinkable. (3496 views)
Tasted by schwartzman on 2/7/2010 & rated 88 points: Agree with several comments below that wine is past peak. Nice cab flavors, just a bit dull and muted. Drink up. (4248 views)
Tasted by sirswami on 12/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Beautiful deep purple color and lush, sweet, dark fruit nose. Harmonious combo of black cherry, blueberry and plum flavors work their way to a slighltly tart but pleasant finish. In my opinion, this wine is in the twilight of its best drinking years, it is starting to throw some sediment and thus I suggest consuming your remaining bottles sooner rather than later. Corison

Producer website

Corison Winery is located just south of the town of St. Helena in the upper Napa Valley. They are on the west side of Highway 29, about a quarter mile north of Zinfandel Lane, at 987 St. Helena Highway, Saint Helena, CA 94574.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
