Tasted by curtr on 1/23/2024 & rated 95 points: In a great place. Smooth with nice depth. Drink now to 2028. (429 views)
Tasted by gabird on 1/16/2024 & rated 94 points: - Brick color with a long finish - After opening, the wine had a forest floor earthiness on the nose. With the pour and a few minutes, the dark fruit and pepper started to join the party. The wine has a complexity of oak, spice and fruit which works well. Its deep and bold. Holding up well and a few bottles left in the cellar. I wouldnt wait too many years but it was a special taste. (283 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 7/9/2021 & rated 96 points: Part of a 4 bottle private purchase of high end wines (this, the '04 Dominus, a '06 Special Selection (Caymus) and a '03 Rubicon) about 4.5 years ago; total was $445, so this was probably about a quarter of that. On the nose and palate, bright sweet black cherry, cassis, mixed dark berries, and black currant, smoke, wet earth, spice, dark florals, anise, leather, chocolate, espresso, singed embers and drying tannins, which I love but which I know others don't, on the end. Dark purple, medium to full-bodied, thick legs. Powerful tannins which integrated well with air, medium+ acidity, a bit of heat which also integrated fairly quickly. Complex, with great persistence and intensity. This wine bore more than a passing resemblance to the Profile, but unlike that wine which came out of the bottle singing, this was both a bit boozy and unbalanced on the initial 1 oz pour. After 2.5 hours of air, though, this was just beautiful, with all of the elements--the fruit vs. structure, the sweetness vs. the savoriness, and the power vs. subtlety--working together in perfect harmony. This ever so slightly edged out the Profile, IMO, because the note of the embers and the tannins gave it just a bit better contrast than that wonderful wine, but again, this wine seems severely underrated on CT (less so among the pros, where the WS had it as a top 25 wine of '08). Perfect match with chicken basil orzo and a very good one with deep dish pizza, but this also excelled on its own, with its elegance and superior balance making for a sublime drink. Has held flawlessly over 3 nights, indicating lots of life left in this one. I'm left to ponder whether the middling reviews are another example of people drinking too early and/or without sufficient air, as the bottle age and aeration really seemed to open up this wine (just so that this doesn't seem like I'm a total jerk criticizing others, I bought 4 or 5 bottles of the '13 Signature from this producer which I found unexciting, but I drank them all within 5 years of bottling and without much air, so I'm guilty in part of what I'm charging others with; I did buy another 3 of the same vintage which are going to rest for a while). This is my first time with this bottling, but I'll do my level best to make sure it's not my last. 96-97, with a ringing recommendation. (2996 views)
Tasted by mdvillaverde on 12/12/2020 flawed bottle: Sadly the cork did not hold up. (2782 views)
Tasted by ocwineo on 6/9/2019 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby color. Lots of jammy fruit and long finish. Tannins still evident indicates this wine can last many more years. (3381 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 5/4/2019 & rated 95 points: Double decanted for 90 min, deep ruby, black cherry & a touch of vanilla, med/firm tannins, long finish with a little dryness; delicious, drink or hold (not sure if the slightly dry finish will improve - perhaps, too much petit verdot)

Fooled everyone at the BB tasting, prob. the petit verdot, continued to improve throughout the evening (3334 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 3/10/2018 & rated 97 points: Dense purple. Cinnamon , cigar humidor , menthol wood smoke and dark fruit nose. Packed with complex flavor. Ripe plum, currant , blackberry, black cherry, moderate tannins, good level of tartness. Modest heat on the blueberry laden finish. Opened and tasted over three hours, not decanted. (4403 views)
Tasted by jimyeni on 12/2/2017 & rated 93 points: 2017 Holiday Season Wine Tasting Party; 12/2/2017-12/3/2017 (Our house): Beautiful nose. Still lots of life left and I think it will still get better. Drinking well now, a good example of aged napa mountain fruit (3496 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 11/29/2017 & rated 94 points: Decanted for an hour last night & took to The Winemakers Table to celebrate Tom's 30th anniversary, med. ruby, dark fruit with leather & a touch of vanilla, mod/firm tannins, mod/long finish; delicious, but my last glass was the best, hold for a couple of more yrs, IMHO (2873 views)
Tasted by Bacchus&Ceres on 6/17/2017 & rated 92 points: Bright, Purple black in color, opaque, shiny, medium+ tears with purple staining, thick slow moving. deep garnet at very edge of rim. Nose is Clean and powerful with intense new American oak, ripe black fruits, Ceres detects subtle floral notes (attribute to petit Verdot) like peppery peonies, pepper, anise, ripe fruit not jammy. Slightly sweet medium tannin, medium acidity, medium + alcohol, nice, Bacchus wants friendly tannins to mature and come into alignment, Ceres thinks -OH throws it slight off balance but we both really like this wine. clean plums and dark cherries, black licorice in the complex finish of this full bodied flexing muscle man! (2505 views)
Tasted by CabIsKing on 11/27/2015 & rated 93 points: Took to 400 Beach South for dinner. Paired it with short ribs and Ahi tuna. Really nice nose of dark fruits, currants, vanilla, violets and earth. Very full bodied in the mouth with a smooth, long finish. Tannins are integrated and its drinking beautifully as of now. Good juice. (4351 views)
Tasted by Bam_Man on 10/30/2015 & rated 90 points: Brought with us to Mark's Prime in Ocala to celebrate Kerry's mom's birthday. This did not get a lot of air time, but that didn't seem to matter. The wine did not evolve with time in the glass. Agree with the previous reviewer, that this seems to be past its prime. Surprising - to say the least - for such a high-end 2005 Napa Cabernet. Still youthful-looking in the glass - a dark, opaque crimson in color, right up to the edge. Offers a very subtle Napa nose that is full of earth, with faint hints of spice and vanilla. Full-bodied and extremely rich. Highly extracted and almost syrupy in texture, but not quite over done. Its blackberry and dark currant fruit has faded noticeably, revealing secondary notes of cassis, licorice and baker's chocolate. Very mild in acidity, this must have been quite "fat" when in its prime. The Petit Verdot dominates the medium finish, which also features drying tannins that are smooth and velvety. Rich, round and polished - but not nearly the great wine we were expecting.

Tasted by Coachron13 on 10/16/2015 & rated 90 points: A little past prime. Somewhat unusual taste, not necessarily in a bad way, but tough to get past it and fully enjoy the other aspects of this wine. A previous note said crushed pencil lead overwhelmed the wine, we didn't note that particular taste but there was something dominant. (3534 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 5/11/2015 & rated 93 points: Needs at least 2 hours in decanter- medium plus bodied, good balance and finish, this probably is near prime but will last 20 more years. Average value (4231 views)
Tasted by tbyrne49 on 4/26/2015 & rated 96 points: - Brick color. It's in total harmony and has flavours of cloves, violet and blackberry with a medium/full body. Satin-Like texture with a long finish - Dinner at Joe and Tamara's new house. Went great with short ribs from ATK. Big, thick wine. Yet good balance of ripe fruit, tannins, acidity. Tobacco flavors, and some earthy spiciness. Long, long finish (3590 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 2/14/2015 & rated 94 points: Very dark red, almost purple. The Petit Verdot does come through on the nose. Deep , rich , still tannic after being open for two hours. Black cherry, blackberry, and tart pomegranate . Moderately long finish. Some ripe plum and cedar on the finish. There was plenty of structure to hold up to grilled filet. Will wait a few years on my remaining two bottles. (2316 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 11/13/2014 & rated 91 points: almost sweet and largely syrupy, ruby to rim, clear, intense, blueberry, cedar carmel toast, low acid, low tannins, medium bodied med + finish. with channa masala. nice pairing (2626 views)
Tasted by tp096255 on 8/20/2014 & rated 93 points: Very Bordeaux-styled from nose to finish. There's an austerity, like crushed pencil lead (is it the Petit Verdot?), that is ominous. It overshadows the fruit and everything else and I don't think it will diminish with time. Rather, it might completely overwhelm everything else.

Once I got past that element there were some seriously deep black and blue fruits in both the nose and the mouth. The fruit trailed off in the finish and gave way to more tobacco and tar, then pencil lead again in the end. This wine just seems too angular to ever coalesce into something grand. It has a lot of great components, those of a 95+ wine, but I can't see it ever getting there. A very expensive journey. (3397 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 8/12/2014 & rated 91 points: The color is dark black-garnet, dense color, deep garnet to the edge, opaque. The smells are dark fruits, flowers, blackberry, currant, dark chocolate, and tar. The tastes are black cherry, earth, blackberry, vanilla, currants, and spicy notes. The tannins are stout and very dry and like course satin. (2626 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 8/11/2014 & rated 92 points: Chappellet Retrospective at TexSom: Bigger (as one would expect) than the signature CS they produce, more of a tart cherry than sweet - not sure if this has the internal stuffing of some of the earlier wines, but very enjoyable. (2568 views)
Tasted by Trolson on 2/16/2014 & rated 89 points: Good bottle of wine though not worth the price tag. Nothing noteworthy. (2913 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 11/25/2013 & rated 90 points: Upfront rich, ripe chocolate cherry flavors. Somewhat surprising firm tannins on the finish. While this wine had a decent beginning and end, there wasn't a much of a mid palate, or overall secondary development to make this more than very good. Not particularly easy on the wallet either...  Tasted by Life At Your Leisure 🍷 on 9/20/2013 & rated 97 points: This won hands down in a 2005 horizontal tasting lot that included Lail Vineyards J. Daniel Cuvee and Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red. The 2005 Pritchard Hill just delivers completeness, power and elegance in every way. Just a beautiful wine overall, and worth keeping in the cellar until 2020. (3170 views)
Tasted by Bigbadbrewsky on 9/20/2013 & rated 93 points: This was a big wine with big personality. Lots of sweet fruit and a big mouth filling presence. Had it right after opus one and it was the star. Just came back from Pritchard hill and drinking this brought back all those great memories. I truly wonderful bottle. (2768 views)
Tasted by curtr on 9/7/2013 & rated 92 points: Decanted 1 hr and consumed over following 30 minutes. Did not open up enough. Would decant 3 hours and wait until 2014 to try again. Wine is balanced and shows promise. (2861 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
