Tasted by Enfantterrible on 5/5/2024 & rated 93 points: The surprise of the evening. I’d been disappointed in this batch until now. This little bottle was excellent! Strong apricot and peach notes, very well balanced, not cloying. Paired beautifully with mango cream dessert. Nice way to end another evening at Tony’s (85 views)
Tasted by Jack60 on 4/13/2024 & rated 93 points: From a magnum and opened for several weeks as I used 4 splits to store the wine in the refrigerator. Paid $75 a bottle and bought 2.

Drinking the last glassful of the 1st magnum and showing little or no signs of decline from oxidation. Light golden color and a few shades darker than purchase date in 2016. Med-full body, honey-citrus on the palate with lemon-mango and a nice acidity balance. No doubt it will improve over the next decade. (535 views)
Tasted by Margaux Bro on 3/11/2024 & rated 94 points: What's not to like at this price point for a 375 (888 views)
Tasted by Pete Moss on 3/8/2024 & rated 93 points: My second ever Sauternes. I am loving this juice.
From .375ml, stored in bond, mid amber colour, cork in perfect condition. Pronounced aromas of botrytis with hints of lemon. Long and luscious it tasted mainly of lemon & grapefruit. Acidity was very good. Found it to be best on Day 2 (it was a wee bit sharp on Day 1).
Overall superb value if buying now and while not as complex as the Suduiraut 2009 recently tasted - it is really lovely (775 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 1/29/2024 & rated 93 points: Pnp and served chilled. Medium+ amber in colour. Nose of honeydew melons, apricots, and a touch of honey. On the palate, sweet pineapples and peaches, along with some brown sugar and a hint of honey are noted. Medium bodied with a medium finish. Last tasted May 2013. (1178 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 1/15/2024 & rated 93 points: This was originally opened one month ago today for Mrs. TLV’s office party. I didn’t have any that night and it has been sitting corked on the screen porch since then. Outside temperatures have been in the -10 Fahrenheit range this week and I noticed it had frozen solid. Brought it in to dispose of, and thought I’d try it before I dumped it. Amazing. Honey and apricots, with a touch of toffee. Long finish with mouthwatering acidity. I would not have believed it if I didn’t see this in person. Probably not the preferred treatment, but in the words of John Mulaney, “it didn’t not work”. (1246 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 12/26/2023 & rated 92 points: Opened on Christmas Eve but I didn’t get to taste any till Boxing Day because of antibiotics. Kept in the fridge. Lovely mix of peachy fruit, barley sugar and botrytis. Very nice, classic Sauternes drinking very well now. (1024 views)
Tasted by RKCam on 12/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Tasted alongside Raymond Lafon 2010 - honey, orange peel and apricot smell. Followed through when tasted, a sharp marmalade and honey glow. Much less weight than RF, more acidic and tart, slightly imbalanced but a good wine (800 views)
Tasted by GuanYu on 8/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Shiny yellow gold. Preserved peach, apricot, honey, and butterscotch. Well balanced, but mid-palate was weak. Long finish. (1548 views)
Tasted by jjhsom on 1/12/2023 & rated 93 points: Rich, concentrated. Agree with others who note honey and tangerine, apricot flavors. (2170 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 12/10/2022 & rated 91 points: Lovely stuff, tangerine, marmalade, rich without being cloying. (1971 views)
Tasted by DH90 on 10/2/2022 & rated 90 points: Pale amber color. Hints of tangerine peel and honey. Not overly cloying with reasonable acidity . Very pleasant wine and still youthful but less concentration relative to other wines from this excellent vintage . (2481 views)
Tasted by wineshlub on 9/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Honey apricot aroma. Smooth flavors of stone fruit and honey. Rich almond finish. Firm backbone, mutable, complex, great staying power. Classic. (2475 views)
Tasted by G.O. on 7/12/2022 & rated 89 points: Lacks acidity and extract. (2559 views)
Tasted by winemanintheden on 3/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Dark amber. On the nose, an intense bouquet of honey, brown sugar, pineapple, orange peels, toasted nuts and fermented grapes. On the palette it’s well balanced with good acidity and some light tannins. It’s aged nicely since my last bottle 2 years ago. No rush in opening these with plenty of life left. Perfect way to end the week. (2381 views)
Tasted by byzero on 2/28/2022 & rated 92 points: Served with the Vinloq System from a 375ml after Chinese New Year dinner

Day 1
👃Apricots and honey🍯. Also peaches, and with time: pineapple and some light florality.
👅Peaches, tropical fruit, acetone. Hints of vanilla/oak especially on the finish.
Proper acidity and med sweetness
Alcohol not exposed. Nice 👍

Preserved in fridge under preservation gas. Sauternes resists oxidation well for multiple days or longer without preservation. However, I didn’t return to this bottle for over 4 weeks

Day 29
A new perfume note this time that I didn’t be notice on Day 1
A little more soft and rounded in character now but the same score
Still drinking nicely (2340 views)
Tasted by OenophilistMN on 12/15/2021 & rated 91 points: From a .375. In a refrigerator for one day, on ice (open) for 90 minutes and allowed to warm for 20 minutes before drinking. I rarely do this, but AAGRAWAL's prior notes describe this wine so perfectly that I adopt them (with attribution, of course). (2443 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 4/24/2021 & rated 89 points: 4th Saturday Group (M&R's): From 375ml courtesy of R&D. Apricot and marmalade notes on the nose and palate. Nice balancing acidity. Very good. (3560 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 1/4/2021 & rated 91 points: From 375mL. Light golden; aromatic, some tropical fruits, guava, youthful oak; palate is full bodied, elegantly textured medium to medium-plus acidity, medium-plus alcohol (13% but seems a bit higher), sweet but not overly so, fruit fades somewhat through the midpalate; medium length finish. Relatively primary as was my last half in 2020. Good but won't develop that next level complexity of top sauternes. 91. (3680 views)

Tasted by empire80 on 11/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Super fresh, concentrated tangerine, not that complex but complete enjoyment in a glass. (3166 views)
 Tasted by robferguson1 on 7/24/2020 & rated 91 points: Nice (3194 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/20/2020 & rated 89 points: Fresh, bright, light, and sugary, there's nothing particularly wrong with this but it's not really a profound expression of Sauternes. (3863 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 7/19/2020 & rated 91 points: From 375mL. Golden; high intensity aromatics with tropical fruits, guava, slight white flowers; palate is sweet but balanced by medium acidity, well integrated medium-plus alcohol, peach fruits; finish is medium length and clean. An interesting sauternes, showing fairly primary on the nose, which is unexpected for its age but delicious nonetheless. 91 (2737 views)
Tasted by PDavisMarble on 7/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Golden. Lovely nose - pineapple, prunes, mango. This is lush, rich, and with honeyed fruits. That said, it was not cloying or heavy. The elegant structure and precise acid made this utterly enjoyable. A long finish, was the cherry on the sundae. (2401 views)

Sommelier Journal, July 31, 2010
(Château Doisy-Védrines, Sauternes (375 ml)) In a half-bottle, this can legitimately be considered a bargain. Referring back to my en primeur notes, the wine remains true to its promise, showing rich, marmelade-laden botrytis notes and a delicious, youthful freshness. Hugely pleasurable now, but with plenty of substance to age. Hot Picks

Bordeaux

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Sauternes

Le Grand Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac 1855 (Crus Classés de Sauternes et Barsac) - Read more about Sauternes, Barsac and its wines
– Read more about the 1855 Sauternes Barsac Classification

Forty kilometres south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is an AOC that includes together 5 communes, including Barsac. For centuries, humans have been patiently learning to master this region's climate, soils and grape varieties. But Mother Nature did a good job laying the foundation. The Sauternes terroir is distinguished by a geological predisposition to gravel and pebbles that cover limestone streaked with veins of clay. In the communes of Fargues and Sauternes, a layer of hardpan (iron-oxide cemented sand) in which vines flourish can be found. The vineyards at the highest elevations and farthest from the river have the best terroirs and produce the majority of the Crus Classés, including the monumental Château Yquem.Sauternes wines are made from Sémillon (80% of vines planted) and Sauvignon (15%) grapes. A bit of Muscadelle occasionally is used to give the wines an untamed touch. Sauternes have an "aged gold" colour that is denser and darker than other dessert wines. When they age, they develop a stunning amber colour. The nose has aromas of flowers and fruit that melt together to create a bouquet of remarkable complexity and balance. The primary aromas include almond, quince, mango, pineapple, stewed peach, dried apricot and passion fruit. There are also floral notes, with touches of linden, acacia, mimosa and honeysuckle. And as is typical with Sémillon, there are also notes of beeswax, almond and hazelnut. In the mouth, Sauternes wines have a powerful style that is viscous but extremely elegant. Its strong sweetness is captivating. Finally, its aromatic finish is something that simply must be experienced.

2013 Vintage Notes:
"the extractive ratios in th[is] year are in the phenomenal range and there's ripeness/botrytis to cover two treks around the globe [...] so appealing is the immediacy of the wines. Many can be enjoyed now for their sheer joy and delicious nature. [Some] should also age" - Jon Rimmerman

2014 Vintage Notes:
"a golden vintage for Sauternes. It may not have the depth or weight of 2010, but it has some of the richness. What has set 2014 apart is the intense lime and lemon flavors that cut into any overblown cloying character and allow both the fruit and the honeyed noble rot to sing." - Wine Enthusiast
