Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 228 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kmforster on 11/23/2018 & rated 90 points: Very good but overshadowed by Dusi and Ueberroth vineyard Turleys from time he same year. (1478 views)
Tasted by yatchisin on 1/1/2018 & rated 88 points: Opened and shared at a party, so just had a quick taste, not enough to develop a full note. A bit past its prime, though--very port-y. (1972 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 11/16/2016 & rated 92 points: Popped 1hr prior to pouring. Opened with fresh ground black pepper on the nose - but with time that receded to show much more ripe raspberry and zinberry (boysenberry/cranberry) as well as a touch of plum liquor. Mid is full of red plums, great acidity, lip-smacking cherry and res berry up front with sweet herbs (pipe tobacco?) on the back. Good long finish. impressively light for a gigantic wine. great showing. (3460 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 6/19/2016 & rated 91 points: Cassis, brambles. Perfect age for it. Light ...impressively so for 15.9 abv. Long plum and Berry finish. Touch of pepper. Damn good. (4119 views)
Tasted by TheyCallMeAddo on 10/23/2015: It ain't dead!!! (5156 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 8/5/2015 & rated 90 points: Crimson in color. 15.9% ABV. Big nose of brambly red fruits, cinnamon and earth. Lush and jammy yet remarkably well balanced. Medium body with enough acidity to make things interesting. Raspberry liqueur, cherries, white pepper and figs on the palate. The finish is somewhat muted. Certainly ready to drink. (4033 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 7/10/2015 & rated 92 points: DRIED PLUMS, BLACKBERRIES, LICORICE, AND LEATHER IN THE NOSE. EARTHY FLAVORS WITH BLACKBERRIES AND BLACK CHERRIES. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (1897 views)
Tasted by DoubleMagnum on 2/10/2015 & rated 89 points: Alcohol was very prominent right after uncorking. Decanting it for 30 minutes blew it off and it was quite enjoyable after that. Still 15.9% ABV is quite high. Over-imbibing not advised. (2916 views)
Tasted by Rob Hansult on 1/17/2015 & rated 91 points: Pretty plum, red & black berry fruit with some raisin. Good balance & intensity. Some round tannin, & OK acidity. Raisin grows with air.
Big wine (16%+ alcohol), with the fruit, flavor, & intensity to carry it.
Big-Country Zin with some flair. Has held well, but, for my palate, time to drink up. (439 views)
Tasted by Tompa71 on 12/29/2014 & rated 92 points: Really enjoyable and in my opinion still drinking good. Despite the high alcohol it showed surprisingly many nuances. This wine should have a characteristic floral note which I must say I did not find.
This wine was bought at Turley cellars in Paso Robles and then brought back to Sweden for consumption. Worth waiting for. (2968 views)
Tasted by lebo9968@gmail.com on 11/26/2014 & rated 87 points: My palate is overly sensitive to "green" or "vegetable" and as with most Zins I tend to pick that out of the wines. Immediately upon open I got that typical green nose. Palate was surprisingly smooth for a wine with 15.9% alcohol. Smooth, almost velvety mouthfeel. I still get primarily green on the palate. (2388 views)
Tasted by Minnesota on 11/13/2014 & rated 86 points: Fruit had fallen off to marked degree, opened up a bit over time but definitely past its prime drinking window. (2072 views)
Tasted by EmilyE on 7/6/2014 & rated 90 points: Oxidative qualities but still delicious (2562 views)
Tasted by pyrat40 on 7/4/2014 & rated 92 points: Classic Turley zin, good fruit, nicely mellowed. Absolutely delicious with BBQ ribs on the 4th of July. (2067 views)
Tasted by EmilyE on 6/11/2014 & rated 90 points: Wine beginning to fall but still very enjoyable (2149 views)
Tasted by Djfermentation on 6/7/2014 & rated 94 points: We took this wine to dinner at Hanks Fine Steaks to share with friends last night. Wow! Everyone loved this zin! I wouldn't wait another day as its drinking wonderfully right now. Turley's always seem to be an easy crowd pleaser and this one was as good as any I've ever had. (1907 views)
Tasted by levinml on 5/26/2014 & rated 92 points: Still rates among my favorite Turleys, and nowhere near over the hill. (1892 views)
Tasted by 41hijinx on 5/24/2014 & rated 91 points: Excellent color in glass with mahogany rims. Lots of weight and concentrated fruit on palate. Alcohol (15.9%) under control. A little jammy and not too complex but very nice. Maybe a few particles of sediment. Virtually at peak but should hold a few years. Needs one hour aeration before drinking. (1510 views)
Tasted by Alv3sachan on 4/12/2014 & rated 93 points: Color is still a pretty dark red but the edges seem to show an orange flare. Nose is big with dark fruit and spice. Tasted of dark fruit, blackberries, some earth, and loads of spice. Nice tannings with a smooth med-long finish. Very balanced wine and a smooth drinker. We did let it sit a bit so the alcohol would burn off a bit. (1706 views)
Tasted by mrmedoes on 3/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Good example of a big zin that has come to integrate really nicely. Didn't blow me away with the depth that I hoped for, but that being said, has integrated into a really nice wine. (1676 views)
Tasted by pmk on 2/20/2014 & rated 94 points: Last one and a dynamite wine. see earlier notes. popped and poured. (1935 views)
Tasted by pmk on 1/6/2014 & rated 94 points: popped and poured. At a wonderful place now - no point in holding longer. Classic Turley with wonderful layering, delicious dark fruit and wonderful very long toasty spice finish. (2376 views)
Tasted by lynarthur on 11/27/2013 & rated 92 points: The wine looks Ruby colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Prune, Raisin, Black currant (cassis), Blackberry, and Mineral. The body is Medium. The wine has Polished texture. The wine finishes Medium. (2283 views)
Tasted by difran on 10/24/2013 & rated 91 points: A little sharp on the nose after the pop and pour. Let it stay in the glass 5-10 minutes and it you get softened edges and fruit with still enough structure. A bit of sour cherry and candy apple. Drink it now. (2302 views)
Tasted by 2loyal on 9/23/2013 & rated 93 points: Still drinking beautifully. Great wine, assuming you also enjoy the almost Rhone-like style that often comes from this vineyard. (2424 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
