Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 67 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Andrewbdc on 12/24/2015 & rated 91 points: The wine is clear and medium gold in colour.
The nose is clean with pronounced inaromas of citrus fruit (candied lemon), stone fruit (peach), green fruit (pear), tropical fruit (pineapple), spice (cinnamon), oak (vanilla, cloves), mlf (cream, butter), tertiary (honey, nuts), fruit development (baked apple). The wine is developing.
The palate is dry, with medium acidity, medium (+) alcohol, full body, pronounced intensity flavours of baked apple, peach, candied lemon, pineapple, almonds, vanilla, cream. The finish is long. The wine is very rich with glycerol mouth feel.
The wine is outstanding in quality. The wine is complex from primary, secondary and tertiary elements and has pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long and the acid, fruit and oak are well balanced.
The wine should be drunk now and is not suitable for further ageing. The primary fruits are starting to fade a bit now and the wine has aged quite noticeably in the last 18 months - colour and tertiary flavours. Drink in the next 6-12 months. (5032 views)
Tasted by theeb on 10/17/2015 & rated 92 points: Sherrynase, sehr nussig, milder Gaumen, trotzdem frisch und schlank. Überreif aber sehr gut. (5158 views)
Tasted by rwgray on 8/1/2014 & rated 91 points: A very interesting chardonnay with some interesting spiciness on top of all of the regular high quality buttery notes. unlike a lot of the community i didn't find this wine over the top in oak. (6458 views)
Tasted by fjd1960 on 7/5/2014 & rated 93 points: Great with Salmon. (6564 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 4/26/2014 & rated 92 points: Clear, golden yellow, slightly fading to the rim. Clean nose, buttery, hazelnuts, vanilla, peaches, citrus fruits, very rich. Full palate, still nice acid backbone, long finish. Excellent. Has been a favourite wine ever since 1995 when we drank it on the evening I proposed to my wife, and this 2006 vintage doesn't disappoint. No hurry to drink. (6733 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 1/27/2014 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soaked pears, yellow apples, hazelnut and talc. Flavors of lemon, Granny Smith apples, yellow pears and a bit of minerals on the finish. Medium to bright acidity, full bodied. Drink over the short term. This was my last bottle sadly. (3505 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 1/18/2014 & rated 92 points: An Eclectic Bring Your Own Red Night (Los Olivos, CA): Very similar to the last bottle, with a bit more heft and richness. Complex floral nose of tropical fruit and sweet spices. Full bodied, with that glycerined texture this wine often features. Flavors of citrus, pear and apple. Medium to long finish, with plenty of balanced acidity. Not for the oak averse but I find this a great use of new oak. No rush to drink. (3782 views)
Tasted by Leigh Johnson on 4/6/2013 & rated 91 points: Limpid lemon gold, nutty, sharp lemon and citrus and white flower. Excellent acidity, broad and rich, a touch of oak. Could very easily be Meursault. Fat, lovely. (3136 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 2/24/2013 & rated 92 points: From a 750. Performing exactly where a Cervaro should be. Complex floral nose with of tropical fruit and sweet spices. Full bodied, with that touch of glycerin this wine often features. Flavors of citrus, pear and apple. Medium to long finish, with plenty of balanced acidity to standup up to the truffled celeriac soup that accompanied it. (3018 views)
Tasted by brooklynJ&O on 2/7/2013 & rated 92 points: As good as the 2009. Thought it wouldn't have the same freshness but it did. Well balanced. Sad its gone. (2742 views)
Tasted by cse on 3/18/2012 & rated 89 points: badly overoaked but there's great raw material underneath. plush on the front end, much more california than burg, especially with that vanilla creamsicle of a nose, but with surprising density and spine, and a long tingly finish. (3574 views)
Tasted by AN on 2/26/2012 & rated 88 points: Very full bodied, powerful, proncounced white - full of layers of aromas, nuttiness, dried fruit, very ripe apples and oak. At peak now, should be drunk within 3 -5 years. Went really well with meat dishes - suckling pig and even mild lamb. Cheers! (3707 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 12/26/2011 & rated 89 points: A bit disappointing actually. I love Antinori's chardonnay blend. Every bottle I've opened (about a dozen) has rated at least a 91. But this one, served with stone crabs the day after Christmas, was a bit light and less interesting than I remember other bottles being. It was missing the pronounced tropical fruit nose that the 2005's had. Also on the palate this seemed to have less mineral flavor and kiss of oak than the previous vintages, according to my notes. Oh well, on to the 2007's. (3087 views)
Tasted by KSWinegeek on 12/6/2011 & rated 91 points: Wow. Bought this on the close out rack for $5, so I was not expecting much given the age. Golden color. Not a particularly expressive nose, but a smooth, agreeable citrus and buttery palate. The moderate length vanilla finish is marred by some slight late bitter notes - probably due to improper storage retail storage for all these years. But the craftsmanship shines. (2755 views)

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.

Yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of yellow pears, wet stones and yellow apples. Flavors of yellow apples and yellow pears. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink now. (3343 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 11/12/2011 & rated 93 points: Tasted blind from a 375ml bottle, I guessed a high end white Burgundy, maybe a 1er cru Puligny-Montrachet or even a Batard-Montrachet from a warm vintage. Fairly dark yellow with golden and some green hues. Intense roast almonds, lemon, green apple and minerality on the nose. Medium+ bodied with bright fruit, minerality and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. (2337 views)
Tasted by Dokken on 11/10/2011 & rated 91 points: Equivelant of a Burgundy premier cru. Medium lemon with intense MLF aromas of butter & hazelnut wrapped around a core of stone fruit and pear. Hints of flowers/honeysuckle. Creamy with refreshing acidity and medium alcohol and body. Some minerality is also there. Overall an outstanding wine from ripe and fresh fruit, that is expressive and well structured. Oak is fantastic bringing all elements together. Chardonnay with Grechetto. Viva Italia! (2213 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 7/17/2011: oaky and full bodied; very supple but lacking in minerality and acidity. (2260 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 7/16/2011 & rated 90 points: heavy oak (3302 views)
Tasted by wahoff on 7/2/2011 & rated 91 points: Deep gold color. Oaked Chardonnay with good length and complexity. Will hold a couple more years.

Robe or profonde. Chardonnay boisé avec une belle longueur et complexité. Evoluera encore positivement quelques années. (3203 views)
Tasted by kenthargis on 3/14/2011 & rated 91 points: Was definitely enjoyable, but not as much as the one about a year ago. The fruit doesn't seem quite as rich. The Grechetto still adds an interesting element. Great with seafood risotto. (3635 views)
Tasted by kweiller on 2/25/2011 & rated 89 points: Not as brilliant as when I last frank it 6 months ago (3847 views)
Tasted by herberto on 1/12/2011 & rated 85 points: A good wine with pesto, though unfocused and a bit bland, and showing some sur maturite at this point. Was my last bottle, and I won't miss it. (4000 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 1/9/2011 & rated 93 points: WIML93+

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of cream, yellow pears and yellow apples. Flavors of yellow apples and yellow pears. Medium acidity, medium to full bodied. Drink now or over the next 2-3 years. (4109 views)
Tasted by herberto on 12/10/2010 & rated 89 points: Nice simple oaked chard. Nice with pesto. (3912 views)

2006 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Umbria Cervaro della Sala

The grapes originate from 15-20 year-old vineyards surrounding Castello della Sala, at altitudes between 200 and 400m a.s.l., on land of Pliocene origin and rich in marine fossils with some clayey infiltration. Once picked the grapes were placed in a refrigerated conveyor to ensure they remained at a low temperature for destemming and crushing. The varieties were fermented separately and in order to increase the range of aromas, the must remained in contact with the skins for 8-12 hours at 10°C. The must was then transferred into new 225-litre French oak barriques (Alliers & Tronçais) where alcoholic fermentation took place for 14 days. The wine remained on the lees in barriques for about 6 months, during which malolactic fermentation was completed. It was then blended an bottled. Bottle ageing lasted a further 10 months in the traditional Castello della Sala cellars before release on the market. Alcohol : 13% Vol.
