Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by vespasian on 11/5/2014 & rated 90 points: This was surprisingly good given the age, the Grenache element gives a little oxidation but on the whole it was a smooth mouthful with good flavour and decent balance. I would drink again. (1759 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 5/9/2014 & rated 85 points: Probably didnt store this one correctly if I am honest, but still a good colour. Not decanted, drank immediately and still plenty of berries, vanilla, ash and cedar oak on the nose. Medium bodied, quite bitter but that is probably my own fault for not letting an 8 year Barossa breath, it does settle a bit though. Shortish finish. My last bottle, the others were used for cooking, a splash for you and a sip for me was the old kitchen theory. Bit of a quaffer but ok I guess, served better as cooking wine.
Agree with the others past its best. (1909 views)
Tasted by rcvx on 7/26/2013 & rated 90 points: Past its prime, but a very enjoyable one: beautiful garnet red with orange shimmers, well balanced, warm (slow legs), medium bodied, round tannins, showing earthy and ripe fruit notes w/ a hint of caramel & spices. (2221 views)

(2647 views)
Tasted by sojoknuckle on 2/18/2012 & rated 91 points: Nice red medium body and was enjoyed as a cocktail. I love the different wines from this producer. (3205 views)
Tasted by C'est la Vin on 1/20/2012 & rated 90 points: Seems to be holding up well, and if anything, improving. Starting to see some mature fruit characteristics. (2021 views)
Tasted by CorkPullerUpSC on 9/2/2011 & rated 90 points: I was a little surprised tonight with this win. We didn't expect much from this bottle, cellared for for about a year. It was paired with a CHARED medium rare fillet. Shiraz was the star but the Grenache was best supporting in this show, with cherry hiding in the background. The wine ended up being the star of a romantic evening. It's a bit like a walk on that steals the show! (2149 views)
Tasted by C'est la Vin on 8/14/2011 & rated 85 points: - Crimsom color with medium forming legs and aromas of cherry. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of strawberry jam and cherry with a medium body. Juicy texture with a medium finish - Sweet fruited but not too sweet. Nice spice. Still holding up okay. Good solid wine still with a bit of tannin grip on the finish. (1965 views)
Tasted by TheBosWineGuy on 6/12/2011 & rated 88 points: I'm feeling this wine. Held up over 2+ days. This is definitely Rhone in it's style but obviously much brighter fruit. I'd say it's like some of the 2007 Southern Rhones I have had. Went really well with mushroom and chicken pie. I'll be buying more at $15. (1876 views)
Tasted by C'est la Vin on 3/29/2011 & rated 84 points: Consumed after two bottles of very nice Cab Sav. Probably an unfair comparison as after drinking these, the big shiraz and rich grenache seemed far to over powering. On previous occasions, drinking this was a very enjoyable experience, not so much on this occasion. (2016 views)
Tasted by Jim.Hoover on 3/17/2011 & rated 91 points: Got this bottle from Total Wine. Nice red-purple, almost looks burnt but not so. Great big earthy Shiraz nose with cherries and strawberries. Palate of mixed berries that opens up quickly with air. Long soft finish. Great value (2143 views)
Tasted by RichardZula on 8/28/2010: Fragrant nose; quite dark in color; dense, rich flavors. (2205 views)
Tasted by jamieirving on 3/28/2010 & rated 91 points: Owned by "cult" winemaker Jonathan Maltus, who made his name with St Emilion's Château Teyssier, The Colonial Estate is made up of a collection of vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Making truly individual wines with equipment shipped in from France, The Colonial Estate's top wine, Exile, uses grapes sourced from the same area as Penfolds Grange.

The 2006 GSM, Envoy, is made from a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Shiraz and 20% Mourvèdre (more commonly known as Mataró in Australia) aged in a mixture of French and American oak for 12 months.

Dark-ruby in colour, I found dark cherry, blueberry and earthy aromas on the nose. The palate is full bodied and mouth-filling. Intense berry fruit, mineral characters and a long, clean finish.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
