Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 55 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by vinelouse on 7/9/2016 & rated 90 points: Dark coloured with significant legs, no sediment in the bottle, not much happening on the nose, no reduction noticeable, decanted for about 20 min, fairly uneventful but nice balanced tannins towards the finish. If you still have some of it drink up pronto! No noticeable difference after several hours of decanting. Did go nicely with steak though. (2989 views)
Tasted by hawkinss on 2/21/2016 & rated 90 points: Still has time. good length. Soft tannins. Mouth filling. (3220 views)
Tasted by tommangione on 12/22/2015 & rated 92 points: One of my favorite Merlots (3333 views)
Tasted by Matty the wine collector on 10/1/2015: Past its prime. Not worth the calories. (3421 views)
Tasted by Wpdawg on 8/8/2015: BirthdayHill stone w mom (3504 views)
Tasted by Bozekt on 5/6/2015 & rated 87 points: Deep garnet in color, the edges show the wine's age. Has started to develop a bit of old world funk on the nose, but is dominated by cedar, cocoa, and licorice with hints of plum still present. Palate is reflective of the nose, but comes off a bit hot. Tannins have completely mellowed out - this wine finishes smooth and supple, but with heat that seems out of balance. Not sure if this bottle has started to turn, but this wine is still a good drink for a smoother wine with a bit of old world elegance. Don't wait any more on this one. (1393 views)
Tasted by ppeterson99 on 11/15/2014 & rated 91 points: very nice. ate with rib eye. good depth and balance. some fruit with nice earthiness (1609 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 10/22/2014 & rated 89 points: Opened and allowed to breathe for 1h. Musty, berry nose, with alcohol. On the palate, red fruit (cherry mostly), with muted oak in the background. Tannins and acid are nicely balanced. Nice but not overly complex. A solid showing for burger night. (1507 views)
Tasted by AMC Eagle on 5/6/2014 & rated 90 points: This is waaay better than when I tasted 2 years ago. Same nose of black cherries and mocha with a hint of cherry pie; the palate is getting some dark plums and dark cherries. A bit hot at the end. 90+ (1849 views)
Tasted by bu11itt on 4/3/2014 & rated 90 points: I'm not normally a big merlot fan; but this wine is great. Nice fruit notes with a dry, acidic bite. (1120 views)
Tasted by Rick.Bennett on 12/11/2013 & rated 89 points: - Garnet color - Classic, good quality stags leap merlot. Makes you wish so much merlot was not ripped out over last 2 decades. Strong, pronounced, pretty berry fruit, solid tannin structure without interfering with acid and balance. (2053 views)
Tasted by Jump29 on 11/26/2013 & rated 87 points: This one had a fly in it! I thought it tasted a little off... (1868 views)
Tasted by Fat Lips on 11/25/2013 & rated 86 points: Decanted for half an hour. Nice, deep, ruby color. Tight nose, cherry and hint of mushroom and soil. Palate: Cherry, blackberry and hint of prune, bitter/sweet with hint of chocolate, mushroom and soil, medium acidity, firm tannins, low-medium finish. Would have given it a higher score if the nose was not so muted. (1709 views)
Tasted by Mad Wine on 7/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Spicy & peppery with a lingering finish, surprisingly muted fruit. Nice legs. Solid wine. (2117 views)
Tasted by manny651 on 2/23/2013 & rated 90 points: nice full bodied merlot, with a great mix of fruit and spice, full tannins and peppery med-long finish. (2016 views)
Tasted by Tarrant on 2/2/2013 & rated 90 points: This was a solid '90', very nice Napa Merlot - Dark brick red, full bodied with a nose of plum, cherry, cedar, spice and vanilla, nicely structured, quite elegant, smooth on the palate with excellent length, nice! (90 Points). (1697 views)
Tasted by TashNYC on 1/23/2013 & rated 90 points: Post-Metropolitan Museum Women of the Nile Event Dinner at the Afghan Kebab House (Afghan Kebab House, NYC, East Side): What a delicious wine! Dark color and expressive nose yields to reveal lots of fruit flavors (blackberry, cherry), dark chocolate, espresso beans and some oak on the tannic finish.
This was tasty now but could age more. Very kind of Gia (Grace) to bring this to share with our group. (1976 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/17/2012 & rated 85 points: Young and full on. Maybe some decanting is needed here but not sure how much will it help. Dark in colour. Nose is full on the dark fruit, oak notes, mocha. On the palate there is heat to begin which mellows out with some food but overall stays a bit harsh and is more of a name than a wine. 85 ish (2154 views)
Tasted by StageOneRacing on 12/14/2012 & rated 88 points: Pleasant nose and silky smooth. Initially was bold but softened by day two. Thoroughly enjoyed this merlot. (1566 views)
Tasted by TheSohs on 6/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Silky deliciousness. Blackberries, oak, some dark chocolate and hint of spice. Incredibly balanced with a lovely long round finish. Great afternoon sipper on its own. (1984 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 5/16/2012 & rated 88 points: Good balanced, between dark fruit and oak. (1881 views)
Tasted by vinoceros on 5/11/2012 flawed bottle: Corked, sadly. (1920 views)
Tasted by gtroeger on 4/28/2012 & rated 90 points: - Brick color with medium forming legs and aromas of rose. It's balanced and has flavours of smokey and dusty with a medium/full body. Round texture with a long finish. (1856 views)
Tasted by manny651 on 4/20/2012 & rated 89 points: Solid, dark, dry merlot, with some spice and only slight fruit. (1925 views)
Tasted by fanglangzhe on 3/25/2012 & rated 90 points: Taste: cherries, dark fruit, slight oak, coffee, dark chocolate. Smooth and well balanced with enough complexity to make it interesting. High deliciousness factor. (2028 views)

NOTE: This is easily confused with Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, but Stags' Leap Winery is a different winery. [StagsLeap See details here].

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
