Tasted by melzar on 4/6/2024 & rated 93 points: Surprise! I have been disappointed in the '07 Chateneuf du Pape wines. This blows away my perennial favorite, Beaucastel, and is my current favorite producer in this region. Like this slightly better than the '15 that I had yesterday. In it's prime drinking window and open for business. (999 views)
Tasted by guitarguy on 4/3/2024 & rated 85 points: Pegau’s reliance (I’ve heard intentional dosing) on bretanomyces rears its head in this wine. Very much upfront zoo, which I don’t like, overpowers the wine on opening. Cherry, chewy leather behind that. Definitely not my thing, I feel Bret is a flaw, you can’t convince me otherwise. (1326 views)
Tasted by skipwine on 4/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Decant for one hour, great nose, fruit and balance with long finish. Drinking beautifully now! (1281 views)
 Tasted by europat55 on 3/28/2024 & rated 92 points: Domaine Pegau 1995-2008 Vertical: Nose: 91, Palate: 92
My #6, Group's #5. Tasted Blind. (1221 views)
Tasted by guido23 on 3/24/2024 & rated 92 points: Delicious, but felt a bit faded. Drink now! (1356 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/14/2024 & rated 94 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS: Chateauneuf du Pape vs Gigondas (By me): Beautiful and complex, fresh bouquet with good garrigue. On the palate juicy acidity, garrigue, a touch of sweetness, fine and round tannin, elegant and an enormous length. Beautiful drinking stage with still a soft and pleasant bite. (1987 views)
Tasted by prism on 2/1/2024 & rated 93 points: Decanted for a few hours; maybe didn't need it. I like to let the funk blow off on these '07 Pégau Reserves, but this bottle was advanced. Not bad at all, but I believe it would have paired better with a hearty stew or even a chicken Marbella than it did with our grilled NY strips and sautéed mushrooms—though it did play well with the maple-bourbon carrots. (2090 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 1/23/2024 & rated 93 points: Better out of the bottle than at 3 hours in the decanter. Would probably drink now based on this bottle (2537 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 1/20/2024 & rated 94 points: Friday Group Brown Bag Tasting (J&J's): Blind. Crimson red color. As soon as my nose hit the glass I knew what this was as the first aroma is that signature bretty funk. Aromas of red fruit, plum and pepper with herbaceous elements poking through as well. Medium bodied. The palate follows the bouquet with abundant red fruit, garrigue and pepper. Long finish.

This continues to show very well- without the roasted/raisiny qualities that other wines in this vintage can show. This was double decanted off its sediment about 2.5 hours before the flight was poured. It continued to drink well throughout the evening and paired very nicely with the bourguignons. (2355 views)
Tasted by canan on 12/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Stunning wine but it really needs a lot more age to really open up. It seems to be at a middle-point in its life and just requires more age.
I tried with extended decanting but it still lacked the airiness and depth and it will get with more age! Still, it still performed nicely and was very tasty and with plenty of thing to still enjoy in the wine! (2338 views)
Tasted by KristianT on 12/24/2023 & rated 93 points: From magnum. In a very nice place now. Extremely healthy cork (looks brand new). Quite dark colour with only a slight watery rim. Classic garrigue notes despite the warm vintage. A little less fresh than the Pegaus from better vintages, but still a very good and well made wine. No rush to drink up, but this will probably not be as long-lived as the better vintages. (1983 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 12/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Medium dark rusty red; slightly acidic, barn, caramel; light creamy fresh expression, some acidity, light fruity, long aftertaste; open and inviting, ready to drink; tasted with Pegau Da Capo same year - Da Capo was more dense and concentrated and perhaps a bit less inviting at this stage - gave both bottles same points (1887 views)
Tasted by Risky on 11/18/2023 & rated 93 points: Decanted for two hours, heavy body, dark, berry, slight allspice, smooth (2330 views)
Tasted by fisk15 on 11/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark red fruited, garrigue and holding well. (2419 views)
Tasted by Eric on 11/11/2023: ESTG Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Mmmm, more spice market, old school, powerful, plush. Very rich. These 2007's are just massive monsters. (2577 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 8/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Consistent with my last note(3-30-23), the dark red fruit notes remind me cherry fruit rollups and haven’t yet turned the corner on being overly stewy, which I find off putting, so I think I’ll probably drink up my last bottle in the nearish future. Quite nice! (2949 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 8/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Strong nose of brett and farmyard still very present, loads of primary black fruit… Still very young, will require 5-10 years of patience! (3114 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 5/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Dégustation horizontale Châteauneuf du Pape 2007 (Ville Mont-Royal): Bel équilibre. Moins riche et profond que les autres, ça reste un vin fin et bien fait. Moins remarquable, mais néanmoins délicieux. 92 pts (3732 views)
Tasted by Peter Spijker on 4/29/2023 & rated 91 points: I'm not too sure about this wine. It has dark fruit, some pepper, garrigue, leather and chocolate, and mild but still present tannins. I didn't find the intensity to be particularly high nor the length to be particularly long, and would have preferred more acidity (but that seems to be a preference thing). (3342 views)
Tasted by BradA on 4/16/2023: Softening on the palate and a tip watery which was surprising to me.. (3476 views)
Tasted by BVal on 4/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Color/App: moderately deep ruby core -> fully bricked/garnet rim; medium ++ viscosity. Great bouquet of plum sauce, soy, black cherries, anisette, forest floor and garrigue. Killer palate after decanting and tasting after an hour; darker fruit, figs, some leather and barnyard and savoury provencal herbs. Big but quite well balanced (tannins mostly faded) with a long, tasty finish that had just a touch of aromatic bitters. I think this has hit it's plateau of maturity so pull the cork and enjoy now and over the next several years. (3078 views)
Tasted by Rote Kappelle on 4/2/2023 & rated 94 points: Interesting experience, this. I don't generally enjoy what Grenache dominant wine does with significant age and this is very Grenache dominant (about 85% of the blend usually) and has significant age. I really enjoyed it, despite the presence of several elements that I don't really like; a cocoa like aroma and flavour and that tendency of Grenache to exhibit high alcohol without the weight to hold in balance.

The above are pretty significant elements, so how is that I really liked this? Some of it may be that I felt like drinking CdP - I think the subjective aspect of wine drinking has to be acknowledged. I mostly despise existentialist philosophy, but sometimes one has to admit that objective reality is influenced at the individual level by the subjective experience.

However, as important are the objectively fine qualities of this wine, from a very fine vintage. There were times when the architecture of the wine had me thinking of Rayas - not as in 'Blimey! This is Rayas' but as in there is a sense of being in a cathedral of the mouth. The texture is part of it - the tannins were a bit chunkier than Rayas, yet I was a bit surprised to see that Pegau has no sandy soil, as the tannins have a slightly sandy quality. The wine also fills the mouth in a fascinating way - fills it, yes but does not coat it, or fill it like it was a crowded subway. Instead you have the sense of being in a high vaulted space, impressive, dark in places and yet also where light and shadow play.

As to flavours, this bottle showed some attractive strawberry and raspberry, earth and leather, something a bit like lavender, cinnamon (I must be wrong on this, as there is no oak influence in this wine) and that chocolate/cocoa element. I decanted this and it built body and opened up over 8 hours, so don't be shy about giving this time.

Length is fantastic and intensity is still impressive, although age has mellowed the wine somewhat. I think I have to score this as 'outstanding', even though I am always hesitant about so doing. Lucky to have this experience. Thank you to the clever and admirable Frenchies. (3529 views)
Tasted by mmcdds on 3/30/2023 & rated 93 points: This is drinking really well tonight almost immediately after opening with rich, rustic, garrigue laden Kirsch, tobacco and leather undertones. The mouthfeel is full bodied and unctuous with firmish tannins on the mid length to long finish. After reading my previous notes, I feel that this has plateaued for the time being, but what a delight. (2761 views)
Tasted by WineDoctors on 3/26/2023: granular tannins: fred's steak, iceberg wedge with roasted sugar plum tomatoes/maytag blue cheese dressing and rosemary smashed potatoes, shitake side: sublime. (2717 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 1/21/2023 & rated 95 points: Regular dinner group (@ My place): Dark berries, herbs and spices, licorice and some chocolate in the beautiful bouquet. Same on the palate, garrigue, clove, juicy dark berries, beautiful acidity and mild tannin with still a lovely bite. The wine is at its peak now and will probably stay on this level for a few years. I have a few more, so there will be follow ups on the development of this excellent wine. (3668 views)

(PEGAU Cuvee Reservee CdP) Pegau Dear Friends, Tonight's offer does not require a long diatribe or dissertation. The more I taste this wine, the more I'm convinced it is one of the finest wines of the 2007 campaign (not surprising). While not as raw as certain vintages of Pegau, it is still produced in a singular style that has become all too difficult to find in the Southern Rhone - one of tradition and reflection. If you are looking for 2007 birth-year wine (a 21st birthday perhaps?), this would be an enticing candidate as the track record is there for spectacular ageing and it will certainly increase in value due to the aura that surrounds 2007 and the eventual rarity that will follow it into adulthood. While tempting to drink now, I wouldn't touch a bottle for at least 10 years and preferably 15. ONE SHIPMENT ONLY of the 2007. This wine has arrived with impeccable provenance: 2007 Domaine de Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reservee Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone3489

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
