Community Tasting Notes (average 87.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wicozani on 6/7/2012 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1 hour before pairing with spicy lasagna. Initially moderately brick red with tawny, clearing edges, and a reticent tired nose. By the time this was served, however, the color had improved a little and the nose was certainly improved. Rose petal, licorice, leather and tar were distinct on the nose, and the palate was generously medium-bodied, with mature dark cherry, licorice, leather, and still-present mild dusty tannins on the finish. Judging by the color, I would not have guessed there would have been any tannins left. This turned out to be an excellent pairing with the lasagna. If I had any more, however, I would drink up post haste. (2065 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 11/27/2011 & rated 85 points: Brown from age. Nice and dry, but the tannins are not razor-sharp around the edges because age has smoothed them a lot. We drank this with Thanksgiving dinner. It was liked but no one was overwhelmed with pleasure. Very good (85.5). (2187 views)
Tasted by bruce61 on 4/8/2011 flawed bottle: Either this was the worst Barolo I've had, or it was a flawed vegetal mess. I go with flawed. (2464 views)
Tasted by Wine-dragon on 10/24/2010 & rated 87 points: Very light body. Earthy, gamey aroma with short finish. (2481 views)
Tasted by RussK on 8/13/2010 & rated 90 points: RUSSK Very Drinkable. Pleasant nose. Light color and body, finishing with some tannic firmness. You might mistake this for a Barbera blend. We fiinished the bottle in no time. Would buy more if 1/2 the price. (2520 views)
Tasted by RussK on 7/28/2010 & rated 91 points: RUSSK WOTN from my 7th St tasting with Pablo. Great nose, med bodied, firm tanins in the finish just waiting for food. Would buy at $30 (1335 views)
Tasted by LEXKYWINE on 3/7/2010 & rated 88 points: Gentle earthy nose typical of Italian wines. Needs food, good with a steak (1314 views)
Tasted by mikee123 on 4/21/2008 & rated 89 points: Nice floral aromas. Classic Nebbiobllo flavour without being overpowering. Good QPR. (1290 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
