Tasted by bravo.solares on 12/24/2016 & rated 93 points: Wonderful stuff. See notes for previous bottles of Auteur Hyde 07's. (1065 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 11/20/2016 & rated 92 points: Substantially more youthful and less evolved than last bottle, but almost as good. Great balance. Auteur's Chardonnays age remarkably well. (1056 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 4/9/2016 & rated 93 points: Beautifully mature and evolved Chardonnay. Some oxidation, which I found very pleasant. Plenty of nutty and almond notes. Chardonnay meets sherry. A hint of caramel. Subtle fruit (some yellow apple, some white peach?) in the background. Oak also (thankfully) subdued and in the background. Beautiful acidity. Wonderful with food.

I will revisit in a year or so. I think this will drink well for a while.

So happy to find some CA Chardonnays that age well and I actually enjoy. (1222 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 1/28/2015 flawed bottle: This showed signs of oxidation, especially on the nose--lots of nutty, almond tones on top of the white fruit. Nice feel & only somewhat muted flavors in the mouth, this wasn't terrible, but was certainly off by a bit.

I'd check in soon or drink up if still holding. (1511 views)
Tasted by Bill1100 on 7/17/2013 & rated 90 points: My last bottle of this vintage :( First half with broiled halibut, second half of bottle with spicy Thai curry fried rice with chicken and Hunan chicken. Wish I had more. Medium to long finish, just enough oak (for me, anyway). Don't drink this wine very cold - it opens up when it warms up a little and all the citrus comes out. You might think it's a sauvignon blanc otherwise! (2002 views)
Tasted by Bill1100 on 5/7/2013 & rated 90 points: Still very good - the finish has gone from medium to long. Not too oakey. Excellent with a mixed steamed seafood dinner - lobster, crab, etc. (1226 views)
Tasted by meatman on 8/24/2012 & rated 91 points: On the crisp side of chardonnay. Enjoyed it the most at cellar temp where the richness and fruit shines through. Plenty of life left. (1607 views)
Tasted by S2 on 6/2/2012 & rated 91 points: Opened along with the 2008 Hyde Vineyard. This was the more enjoyable of the 2 wines. Lots of citrus notes on the nose. Tim was really pulling out the grapefruit and said that if served blind, he might have guessed that this was a Sauvignon Blanc. I couldn't disagree. This wine had a much larger fruit profile on the nose and the palate when compared with the 2008. These are the first Auteur Chardonnays I have opened. Very nice wine and very much worth the price.  Tasted by markjahnke on 3/3/2012 & rated 91 points: Drinking very well right now, but could quite possibly get better. Popped and poured blind, and threw many people for a loop where they couldn't guess what it was. Formal notes to come. (2057 views)
Tasted by caboychuck on 1/12/2011: Green apple on the nose. Apple, lively acidity, great finish. Delicious stuff. (1883 views)
Tasted by markjahnke on 1/31/2010 & rated 91 points: While this wine was cold, it had a lot of sauvignon blanc characteristics. As it warmed up however, it seemed to gain body and get heavier, and the chardonnay qualities began to shine. Once it warmed up in the glass, it had a great nose of lemon and lime, as well as hints of peach, honey, and some pineapple. There also seems to be a bit of alcohol on the nose, but it definitely didn't overpower the fruit. I am guessing that this will settle out with another year in the bottle. I also picked up a bit of nuttiness on the nose, reminiscent of a similar experience we have had with some sparkling wines and Champagnes. On the palate, this wine opened up very nicely, but what do you expect from a wine with Hyde Vineyard fruit? Tons of citrus on the palate, as well as another fruit that I cannot put my tongue on. There seems to be so much going on with the palate of this wine, and every time you swirl the glass, it is almost as though a new flavor is coming out. It is going to drive me crazy trying to think of the fruit that this reminds me of, but for the life of me, I cannot pull the name out of the air. Finally, on the finish, some lemon shines through, as well as a subtle hint of herb and a bit of spice. The finish has integrated nicely at this point, with some nice acidity. This will make a great summer sipper, but I think we'll try to hold off this summer and save the remaining bottles to get a bit of age on them. With time, this can be some classic California chardonnay, and a true treat. I don't think that at this point I would put it in the same class as a Kistler or Aubert, but I think it is just a matter of time that this wine could definitely achieve this potential. For now, it is just a step behind. All in all, a nice wine on a winter night in front of the fire. This is a perfect example of a chardonnay that I enjoy drinking, and this is made exactly how chardonnay should be made. 91 points now, with at least another point or two possible with some cellar time. Cheers! (2098 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 1/18/2010 & rated 89 points: Quite enjoyable. Some nice lemon oil, light honey and subtle buttered popcorn play.
Palate is not too rich or extracted but still shows some nice oakiness that you expect in Hyde Vineyard bottlings. (2009 views)
Tasted by jeffm_fla on 5/24/2009 & rated 89 points: lemon-citrus acidity, but not really a great flavor or food complement (1056 views)

2007 Auteur Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard

Winemaker's Note: The near perfect Hyde Chardonnay shows a remarkably crisp, refined, almost aristocratic side of California chardonnay. While reticent on the nose at first, hinting at tropical and citrus fruit, after few minutes in the glass, fruit comes gushing forth with white peach, lychee, pineapple and lemon. As these fade, the haunting aroma of hazelnut becomes apparent and is joined by an earthiness seldom found in California chardonnay. On the palate the cascade of fruit continues, constantly changing but finally coming to rest on exotic starfruit. The finish lingers with baked lemon and spice. While all the ripe fruit gives an impression of roundness, ample acidity keeps this wine fresh and coiled, suggesting not only long aging potential, but also making it a perfect refreshing spring wine in its youth.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.
