Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 94 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 58 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 11/24/2023: Medium-dark ruby/brick. Nose of raspberries, kirsch, and a bit of horsey/Brett notes. Silky, rich mouthfeel. Berries and Brett on the palate that appeared cleaner and more pure on day 2. Still good tannin and sufficient tannin to age; some sweetness on open. A bit awkward and surprising initially that improves with a day of air. Hold. (233 views)
Tasted by bablues on 5/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Much more rustic than I was expecting. There was some orange/brown along the edges. Slightly bitter at first but then opened up nicely. Strong aromas of leather, cinnamon. Excellent finish. (1769 views)
Tasted by winepog on 3/28/2021 & rated 94 points: Definitely drinking well right now. This was outstanding. Popped and poured and that was the good decision. Cheers. (1660 views)
Tasted by TheBosWineGuy on 4/8/2019 & rated 94 points: Had been sitting on this bottle for many many years and served it with a traditional Piedmontese dish of Panissa Risotto. I see the mass appeal of this bottle - the touch of French Oak lifts the aromas and gives the wine a roundness and upfront flavors that Nebbiolo usually lacks. It makes the wine much more approachable and enjoyable. On top of that, the strength of this vineyard can easily be seen with the complex flavors, intense acidity, and fine astringency. It’s a magnificent effort. (3040 views)
Tasted by diane.forgy@dianeforgy.com on 5/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Wasn't sure what to expect when I pulled this from my cellar. The color had started to brown so didn't expect much. But it was beautiful and properly balanced with rustic red fruits, acidity and earthy tones. Had a couple of glasses, hopefully still shows well tonight. Have one more of these to pull, it's time to drink up while it is singing its last encore. (3639 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 1/20/2018 & rated 94 points: Wine # 6 in Blind Nebbiolo Tasting (J. Haslam)

The group thought this was a '11 or '12 Barolo. I thought it was an '04/'05 Barolo so this was my only victory of the night. I tried this a few years ago and loved it but could not find anywhere to buy this wine - JJ Buckley had 4 bottles of the '13 which I purchased.

This was also the WOTN out of 11 wines (6 #1 votes) with some strong competition - It was my WOTN as well.

Only notes I had: Rose petals, menthol, cherry and sour cherry on nose / palate. Very tannic, lots of oak on palate but very balanced. I loved this as did the group. 94+ This has aged extremely well and as Russk noted below, this is a producer to seek out. (3619 views)
Tasted by RussK on 12/17/2017 & rated 93 points: Russk. Whiners holiday party at Jim and daren's house. Theme Italian wines 10 years and older. For me this was the WOTN. A perfectly mature barbaresco showing it's feminine side. The 14.5% alcohol felt more like 13.5%. Other years on cellartracker appear to be very well-reviewed. Keep an eye out for this producer.  Tasted by BrunelloBob on 11/10/2017 & rated 90 points: Pretty red. Needed a bit of air and to come up from cellar temp. (2984 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 4/17/2017: Intense perfumed dried rose petals aroma. Clay rich soil? Sweet yet delicate rose water taste shines against the background of a slightly aged nebbiolo. Lost most of its youthful appeal, settling into middle age. Still very pretty, feminine style wine, drinking well now. (2994 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 8/19/2016 & rated 92 points: Fully developed now, a former cherry praline with dried and slightly blurred fruit, dried roses, bazaar spice, and hints of chocolate and coffee. Smooth tannins, moderate freshness, velvet texture and a slightly thick consistency. Yummy, and slowly going downhill, it needs the right food companions for the toasted components to be fully enjoyable. Probably at its best four to five years ago. For the record, vintage '10 was also quite oaky. We'd love to see this wine with less new and toasted oak in the future. (3721 views)
Tasted by redman77 on 2/7/2016 & rated 95 points: Wow factor off the chain amazing. 30 minutes this opens to wonderful wine with long smooth finish. (4062 views)
Tasted by Jack O'Brien on 8/29/2015 & rated 100 points: Better and better and better each year. This wine is perfect. I feel bad for people who have never had these wines or heard of this family. It never ceases to blow me away and just when I think it can't be possible for this wine to be any better than perfection, this wine consistently shocks me. This my desert island wine. (4765 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 7/30/2015 & rated 90 points: TTTG Italy (Coventry, CT): Very little sediment at this point. Medium garnet. On open, a beautiful nose or red and black fruit, with a bit of oak characteristics. Very pretty. Initially, some slightly green tannins, but very well integrated. Medium acid. Four hours after a double decant, showing very well! Really nice. A day later, still showing some rich, roasted character (oak?), but also red and black fruits and a strong tannic spine. Very silky frame. Quite enjoyable. Would hold another 3ish years until beginning of drinking window. My and group's #3. (4604 views)
Tasted by swapdoc on 8/11/2014: If not for some residual tannins, and particular nebbiolo driven tannins at that, in a blind tasting may have called this wine a delicious and classy Burgundy. A recently tasted '10 Luciene Le Moine G-C Les Cazetiers comes to mind. Well knit, lithe and smooth, hinting of blueberry and black cherry with just a touch of menthol, this wine is just entering a prime drinking window -- may need another year or so to shed the tannins completely. Quite distinct from the traditional sap and roses aromatic profile -- and quite delicious. (4620 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 6/7/2014 & rated 93 points: A good friend brought this to dinner - he splash decanted and we drank ~ 2 hours later with grilled NY Strips. Did not take notes. Beautiful (94+) nose - menthol, sour cherry, tar, cherry on nose & similar on palate. Very concentrated on the palate but high acidity and nice tannic backbone provided balance. Tasted alongside a 1997 Poggio Antico and a 2005 Clos Apalta and this was my favorite. Given CT average value killer QPR on this. 93-94 range (close to 94 than 93 but don't want to go that high given I did not spend more time with it). Need to buy more current vintages of this.  Tasted by Jack O'Brien on 2/28/2014 & rated 100 points: Still f*ing amazing! Tasted along side Sassicaia and it the super-tuscan didn't stand a chance…. (4084 views)
Tasted by RobertDwyer on 11/24/2013 & rated 95 points: Spectacular once again. (3977 views)
Tasted by pedrosette on 2/9/2013 & rated 98 points: Jack O'Brien and King Barolo are right. This was a wonderful, memorable bottle.

It was recommended to me by the owner of Fafiuchè in Rome. I asked him for a bottle of wine that would speak to my heart. And it did. (5195 views)
Tasted by kenhoeve on 11/19/2012: Still too tannic, wait. (4699 views)
Tasted by Johnny C NYC on 11/11/2012 & rated 94 points: Nothing but a delicious wine - something for everyone. Strong and complex nose, with an intense brood over the berry. Full spectrum of flavor overrides the otherwise incisive tannins. Not sure how it will age, but it's a lot of fun right now, and it begs to complement food (paired it against nutty cheeses tonight). 50/5/14/17/8 (4372 views)
Tasted by kenhoeve on 5/20/2012: NR. A lot going on here. Very high acid and tannin. Pretty incredible floral notes, intense, but wound tight. Needs a serious decant or some years. 93+? (5447 views)
Tasted by Old Vino on 3/2/2012 & rated 93 points: Great structure. Not ready at the moment. Will revisit 2020+ (5395 views)
Tasted by Jack O'Brien on 2/7/2012 & rated 100 points: I have been tracking this wine over the span of a couple years and I think this is drinking perfectly at the moment. What else is there to say that already has not already been said about this gem. Find it, buy it, drink it, love it. (5555 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 12/19/2011 & rated 93 points: Wide open nose with gorgeous cherries, violets, almonds and a little bit of chocolate. Extremely silky tannins and a smooth mouthfeel, all taste components are nicely integrated into the elegant personality. A nebbiolo for the burgundy lover - drinks perfectly at the moment. Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
