Tasted by Senso-beak on 1/27/2021 & rated 88 points: Opened and poured. Medium bodied zin, showing peppers and blacks. Sold offering that gained traction with air. Not too hot. Nice fruit but not too flabby. Showing some plummy secondaries. Solid. (296 views)
Tasted by mkmast on 12/31/2015 & rated 94 points: Similar to previous notes. Sorry to see my last bottle go. (865 views)
Tasted by mkmast on 12/10/2014 & rated 95 points: If thesis what an old vine zin can be with some age on it, I'm all in. Wow. This was delicious. The red and black fruits are beautiful and the tannins and alcohol provide just enough bite. The pepper and brambly flavors I move in Papera zins sing in this wine and a hint of something resembling graphite appears. The finish held on forever. (1006 views)
Tasted by suburbanfrog on 5/27/2012 & rated 94 points: A very impressive bottle of zinfandel. It shows incredible Russian River Zinfandel fruit with perfect balance. An impressive Zinfandel! (2058 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 10/4/2011 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby color. Brambly berries, pepper, vanilla, black cherries, licorice, a touch of earthiness and a nice floral note on the very open and inviting nose. Full body with ripe tannins and nice acidity. Loaded with rich and peppery berries on the palate. Ripe but not syrupy. Very Carlisle like. Nice length on the finish. Seems to have improved from last bottle, close to a year ago. Drinking very nicely. (2477 views)
Tasted by WinoRhino on 8/4/2011 & rated 87 points: Lacks complexity. Not much of a finish. Alcohol content is high and sweetness that comes along with that is apparent. Fine week night dinner wine. (2528 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 11/26/2010 & rated 89 points: Dark ruby color. Brambly berries, cherries, vanilla, white pepper, and a floral note on the nose. Full body with soft, ripe tannins and decent acidity. Fruit is redder and spicier on the palate and finish then the nose would lead you to believe. A touch soft, so I don't think this is a candidate for long term cellaring, but that doesn't matter because the wine is delicious now. (2305 views)
Tasted by mkmast on 11/2/2010 & rated 92 points: Opened the bottle and poured a little in the glass . The nose screams zin. I just love the aroma. A jammy wine with really strong dark fruit flavors. A good amount of spice and acid to back up the fruit. I can't wait to visit the winery next week. (2642 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 8/2/2010: 15.7% alcohol. Big and ripe, with jammy, spice black fruit jumping out of the glass. Viscous and focused in the mouth, with a quite spicy edge taking a prominent role. Solid acidity and a strong finish. A- (1994 views)
Tasted by haldolugr on 6/26/2010 & rated 87 points: Tasting note very close to previous bottle - big tasty fruit but this bottle seemed to have a little too much acid when going down. (1969 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 5/5/2010: 15.7% alcohol. This is a fun contrast with the Carlisle. The styles are similar, but blind you might be inclined to think this was the Carlisle. It is big and fruity, overtly so, with just gobs of slightly jammy black fruit. Spicy and with good acidity, it is a terrific wine. A- (1992 views)
Tasted by brianngibson on 4/11/2010 & rated 90 points: Red raspberry and strawberry, with a hint of spice and spring flowers. Reminds of Syrah and Pinot Noir, and a little atypical of Zinfandel. A more elegant version of the varietal. Similarities exist to the Williams-Selyem version of the same vineyard specific Zin, which I had about 3 months prior, but this is not quite as refined and has a little too much sweetness. Well done, but the W-S version was better. (2099 views)
Tasted by haldolugr on 4/9/2010 & rated 88 points: Big fruit!! A little bit different then most Zins - Easy to drink though. Reminded me of Four vines Biker Zin - except this had less oak and was much more balanced for me. (2032 views)
Tasted by ScottGoodwin on 10/6/2009: Very restrained for a Zin. Had a little bit of the pink rubber ball aroma. Very nice. (2215 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 4/23/2009: Added to database so I am early to the party, with a young wine, too. I have had this bottle open for over 2 days so use that as a guide. Graphite, fruit bowl and some vanilla on the nose. As I drink the wine, I keep coming back to 'pinot-like' in terms of the fruit flavors, showing in pomegranate, raspberry and strawberry. However, there is enough glycerine and weight to dismiss this from a blind guess as pinot but the point I am offering is that this wine is not big zin, but fruity zin. Enough tannin and mineral to suggest short-term decanting but think medium + body, lots of red fruit edges and an 'enjoy me' signature. (2297 views)

Papera Ranch

Papera Ranch (Formerly Carlo's Ranch) vineyard is an old-vine Zinfandel vineyard, located on the eastern side of the Laguna de Santa Rosa in the Russian River AVA, Sonoma County, California. Just a stone's throw from Carlisle Vineyard, this "grand dame" of the Russian River Valley was planted in 1934 by Charley (Carlo) Papera. While many old-vine vineyards contain plenty of mixed black varieties, most of the blocks at Papera Ranch are 95+% zinfandel. One block, however, does contain a significant amount of carignane with a sprinkling of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Valdiguié. Given its cool location, this vineyard is typically picked in late October. These old vines are head trained and dry farmed to produce high quality harvests, resulting in intensely flavorful grapes.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
