Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 157 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by melvinyeowq on 3/22/2024 & rated 93 points: Champagnes and Rieslings at Cutlery Optional: Golden colour. Oscillated between Chardonnay and Pinot but landed on the latter when the red fruit emerged with air. Similar impressions to before - oxidative house style was evident with integrated oak use, some hazelnut notes. Not normally a fan of CDG but this was harmonious with impressive length (and also not oxidised). (569 views)
Tasted by LT98 on 12/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Part of a Champagne tasting where there were many fine wines. I liked the age and toastiness, but others wondered about pre-mix. I didn't see that and felt that it was winemaker style. (675 views)
Tasted by jlc23 on 11/22/2023: 94 pts - roots morristown pre-thanksgiving; deep yellow, still vibrant, on par with the 85 Krug. (656 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 11/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Dinner with Nick: Deep golden in colour. Guessed as a ‘96 house that had oak use, maybe Giraud. Oxidative with nutty notes. Fresher and had more acidity than the ’98 last month but would still have preferred more cut annd energy. (900 views)
Tasted by T.E.D. on 6/6/2023 & rated 94 points: Perfectly mature. Hint of amber color. Very toasty and yeasty with hints of herb, fresh cut forest Complex. (1267 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/30/2022: Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Off the restaurant wine list and it was very tasty right from the beginning. Probably in the early part of its drinking life. More brioche and toasty and a bit more weight to the body but with very fine bubbles. Drinks nicely. (2361 views)
Tasted by kenv on 8/18/2022 & rated 93 points: WWC White Burgundy Blind (Fort Orange Club, Albany, NY): Smokey, yeasty nose. Beautifully balanced. Complex and long.Very tasty Champagne. (2255 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 4/19/2022: Recently disgorged. Toasty. Quite dry. Fantastic! (341 views)
Tasted by canan on 12/28/2021 & rated 95 points: Champagne Brunch (@Terkel): Intense green apple, almost in an apple-juice kind of way. Wild and piercing acidity with a lovely feel of chalk.
It does however feel a bit unresolved and seems to need a lot more time in bottle but still, a very impressive wine! (2763 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/17/2021 & rated 94 points: Light medium butter yellow color with steady, tiny bubbles; savory, clarified butter, butter croissant, chicken broth, dried mushroom nose; mature, autolytic, tart lemon, dried mushroom palate with good balancing acidity; long finish (1140 views)
Tasted by Bruce 1er on 4/10/2021 & rated 90 points: Light gold/orange. Elegant, distinguished. Minerals are prominent. (3216 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 2/13/2021: Dark in colour (in keeping with many 2000 champagnes) and flavour profile: lots of savoury, pinot notes here. (3050 views)
Tasted by Ebrim on 12/31/2020 & rated 92 points: Clear, medium golden core, medium broad watery rim, developed

Nose is clean, medium intense aromas of apples, grilled lemon, cocoa, brioche, yeast, a definit touch of autolysis, mature and complex, developed

Palata is dry, medium acidity (5.1gr/L), fine elegant mousse, medium alcohol, body and flavour intensity, medium+ dry-extract and aromas of red apples or apple nectar, grilled lemon, cocoa, honey, brioche, limestone, metallic aromas, very oyster like in a medium finish

Very well balanced, medium finish (the biggest draw), not that intense, the dry-extract is quite high, but it lacks some acidity which i think would benefit both the lenght and acidity, very deep complexity and high concentration. In all a oustanding wine, perfect to drink now in my opinion. 92p (2539 views)
Tasted by Philip Yang on 11/30/2020 & rated 94 points: Lively.zesty and everyone keep reaching for more. Great stuff. (2478 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 10/15/2020 & rated 94 points: Second time with this bottle, and this was very delicious. The nose was definitely much more advanced than the 2005 that we had alongside, with a lovely nutty, slightly caramelly note, a little earthy hint, and a nice waft of ripe red apples. Really nice. The palate did not quite have the cut and elegance of the 2005, but there was lovely roundness and a real deliciousness to it, with warm spice wrapped around a lovely core of red apples, with just the tiniest hint of oxidative brandied notes starting to creep in. Lovely finish too, really generous, with ripe red apples notes seasoned with a lovely hint of spice and earthiness. Gorgeous. (2478 views)
Tasted by acidqueen on 8/12/2020 & rated 94 points: Deep yellow gold color. I thought it might be getting advanced but, just like two years ago, I was wrong. After time in glass this brightened up considerably. Light apple, yeast and bread with lemon and smoke. This is undeniably a wine that needs air to blossom. Easy to drink a lot of this now but plenty of time ahead. (1815 views)
Tasted by BSA on 7/3/2020 & rated 91 points: From memory. Depth and power here, showing development though not particularly nuanced. Some funk on the nose that did not leave. A bit flat perhaps. That said, it was it was very drinkable and joyful but not with that grace or lift one could have hoped for. 90-91p. (1758 views)
Tasted by NYC_Maenad on 5/17/2020: Our first bottle of this from a source in the UK. Poured very young looking, pale straw with very energetic bubbles and a sense of viscosity even on the appearance. The nose is deep and dark pinot fruit, some truffle notes, background of spicy flowers - I mean, not flowery cloying flowers, more like wild flowers, with green elements in the background. I think of Clos des Goisses as a wine that needs tons of time and air, and we probably didn't give it quite enough of either, though I tried hard to keep it in the glass while sipping on something else. I was very impressed with the power here, and liked very much the earthy quality that some other notes complain of, though I didn't find it the least bit dirty. One of the more impressive young Clos des Goisses I've had, as well as an impressive 2000. There's clearly a ton of development ahead, in my mind, so if you open a well stored bottle now, I'd give it plenty of air and a glass with some space. It's broad shouldered, not a light starter champagne at all. (2328 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/15/2020 & rated 88 points: The Last Supper (Before the Covid-19 Shutdown) (El Ideas): There's always a distinct earth character that I can't get past in Clos des Goisses. It's here in spades on the nose. The palate is also earth-inflected but there's enough ripe fruit to counter. Good energy and vibrance. Not my cup of tea given that distinct almost dirty earth note. (2355 views)
Tasted by MartyL on 12/31/2019 & rated 93 points: Mature, rich and powerful. Very Pinot-dominated. This turned heads. Opinion was divided as to whether this or the 08 Dom was the better wine. I think the latter will probably have a longer life, but for right now the Goisses is the winner. Contra to my last note from three years ago, I'm not sure this is going to get much better over time so I plan to drink my remaining bottles over the next couple of years. (NB Jill loved this). (1974 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 5/25/2019: at the home of two dogs, with friends old and new: vigorous bubbles yet fine bead; golden color. Nose a bit reduced/funky at first, then some floral notes after swirling. Palate pronounced minerality, high acidity, powerful. Some pure nectarine fruit, and some brioche richness. Still very young, great potential. 93 pts with upside. (2268 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 12/15/2018: East Bay Burgundy Group - Holiday Dinner Party (Chez R&G): a nose of nectar and figs. a rich mouthfeel that come across as complex and still young. (3016 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 12/15/2018: East Bay Burgundy Group - Holiday Dinner Party: This was served too cold, my fault. Initially promising with rich and complex aromatics, it seemed to stiffen up in the glass. As it was the only wine open at the time, it was quickly drained and so we unfortunately did not have the opportunity to follow its evolution. (2856 views)
Tasted by Elpaninaro on 11/16/2018: good gold color, light but persistent nose of baked bread and nuts, on the palate a firm wine with a more serious structure than many 2000s, ripe fruit well countered by a good long finish with nicely detailed acids, just starting to cream and develop a bit of mousse, citrus notes with time, about ready to go but I think this will cream out a bit more, a fine 2000 and far more to my liking than most wines of this riper Champagne vintage. ***+, now to 2035. (2941 views)
Tasted by jrkennedy37 on 11/16/2018: Drinking well today compared to other recent (1996-2006) vintages, though would likely benefit with further time in bottle.

Such a well made wine with no element out of place. Notes of citrus contribute elegance while the yeast sustains length and complexity. (2293 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
