Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 56 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by gzim on 11/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Presented with a lot of youthful structure. With a Half hour in decanter and half hour in glass it started to loosen up. As so it became better integrated and started to showing some beautiful sweet red fruit mixed with typical darker notes and some white pepper. (180 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 10/22/2023: Heck, 8 years since I had a bottle of this, and the one I opened last night was the final one left in my cellar. It had been resting there for the past 8 years. Decided to give it a whirl. Plenty of sediment caked to the side of the bottle with the long rest it has enjoyed. Didn't seal this up last night but instead just left it on the counter without the cork, so it's had plenty of air. Purple flowers, very aromatic with bacon fat and a pinch of heat (says 14.5% on the label, with this site always the highest stuff Wells made). Red and black fruit, both are verging on the riper side for me. Tarry, some garrigue, spicy red and fresh acidity, which has held up in the wine well for what is now 15 years. This has a juicier profile, the weight seems managed pretty well, too. There is a lot of Wells' style in this wine, with the style coming through in the weight, fruit colors (red is here, as much as black) and overall I like it. As for aging, with the air this has seen, it's polished and seems ready to go. (543 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 10/1/2021 & rated 93 points: Bright cherry red color. Black cherries, bit of pepper on the nose. Smooth, deep fruit, black cherries, blackberries. Got brighter with air. Beautifully resolved tannins, perfectly balanced acidity. Finishes long with blackberries and spice. Beautiful wine. No need to wait but can be drunk over the next 6 to 8 years. (1158 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 2/4/2021 & rated 92 points: still inky
on pop n pour- raspberry jam nose more in line with this vineyard than my last outing
Palate is dense rich darker fruit than raspberry
finish is clean but a bit short relative to the rich entry

outstanding for me (1239 views)
Tasted by nkirsch on 8/11/2020 & rated 87 points: I waited too long to open. OK but has lost its luster (1301 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 4/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Last of 2 bottles, drank the first bottle 7 years ago! Scored it 93 pts.
This bottle is black as tar, thick, smoky, some notes of olive paste and black-fruited, with an underlying sweetness, and nicely rounded tannins which are supported by just enough acidity to keep the wine from being too syrupy or flabby.
Delicious, drink now through 2024 or so. Will not likely further improve. (1369 views)
Tasted by VoteferPedro on 2/23/2020 & rated 90 points: fun to drink and solid on fruit and acidic seam that I lime but not much on place to make recognizeit (1311 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 1/25/2020: Tonight I found this rather fruit forward, popping with juicy red and black berries, but lacking in the savory notes that would bring it into better balance. No decant - this was just pop and pour. (1269 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 10/4/2019: This is in a great spot. Lots of sediment so consider decanting. Nose of dark berries. Very balanced with dark fruit, earthy forest floor and some savory grilled meat notes. (1345 views)
Tasted by imbibe on 6/18/2019 & rated 90 points: Still sings with the voice of a bawdy angel. Enough balanced fruit and tannin and acid to last another 5 years easily. (1268 views)
Tasted by Khyrz075 on 4/17/2018 & rated 90 points: Great bottle of wine and in a very nice place right now. (1683 views)
Tasted by mpdonnel on 11/5/2017 & rated 92 points: In a great place. Dark red and blue fruits, medium acidity and fine tannins. (1541 views)
Tasted by Brian Love on 10/30/2017 & rated 93 points: Haven’t been on Syrah lately but this was very very good. Deep and rich - most surprisingly held up amazingly well over 5 Days (forgot I had opened it). (1677 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 10/21/2017: Slow-ox one hour, tasted over 2 hrs
-nearly opaque black cherry red no bricking
-moderately expressive smoky juicy purple fruit blackberry jam floral wet stone
-med/med- acidity, soft almost lush seemingly endless layers of depth without excessive weight, ripe plum/blackberry on a soil-inflected base and a touch of heat on the average length finish with med/med- tannins
-gorgeously complex evolving nose, straddles but doesn't quite cross the line between ripe and over-ripe and between rich depth and heaviness, some of the fruit on the palate has started to fade but not much overt development, this may still have a couple years of upside (1691 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 9/17/2017 & rated 93 points: At home, last bottle from a batch bought at release. Served with a sausage/tomato/brocollini experiment...Decanted and drank over three hours.

Color is medium purple, starting to separate a bit at the edge. Nose was really expressive with this bottle: dark fruits, blackberry, spices/cloves and smoke. Palate was rich as remembered..from
prior notes: "dark fruits, blackberry, tart blueberry, earth notes, mocha, caramel and figs." The palate seems softer (from memory) than prior bottles. Medium/full bodied, elegant finish...tannins fined and resolved

Glad that I cellared this, was great to drink over the years and has evolved into a beautiful and interesting wine. Might be in it's "perfect spot" at this point. I think it will last as an interesting wine but may be at its best over next 2-3 years... (1614 views)
Tasted by wiscgrad on 5/20/2017 & rated 93 points: Nothing like the last saxum I had. Much more elegant bit quote delicious. Well balanced with tons of red fruit and acidity. But some dark fruit ad well (1423 views)
Tasted by goodvitis.com on 3/5/2017 & rated 93 points: The nose offers aromas of menthol, boysenberries, smoke and crushed olives. The palate is smokey and juicy with strawberries, huckleberries and a huge amount of raspberries, blood, and there's a nice little chili pepper flake kick at the end. The thick, grainy tannins are nicely integrated. This is a fully developed and well-rounded effort with several more years of prime drinking. (1428 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 12/30/2016 & rated 92 points: W choucroute one has to have syrah and here we go BINGO! What a lovely wine. I was debating between the 2006 JB and this. I didnt want to cork trouble on the 2006. This cork came out great and with no decant even the first sips were great. As far as I recall this is my best copain syrah. Beautiful color, nice syrah nose and on palate it was dancing with the food. Good length finish. Now after 2 hoursit is even better as it becomes more complex. Great fruit, balance and all. Yummy wine to close out the year! (1428 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 2/26/2016 & rated 92 points: 4yrs from my last bottle. Seemed a little more subdued with a shy nose compared to 4yrs ago. Great meaty core with a distinct bacon note and a little smoke. Fruit is a little behind the structure at this point. In a rather inbetween place. Pretty serious wine. (1859 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 12/25/2015 & rated 93 points: Christmas Day in OC, delicious dinner made by Krista, had this with the main courses. Decanted for about 45 minutes, drank over 2 hours.

Medium purple color. Nose was dark fruits, bramble-berry, spices, cloves. Palate of dark fruits, blackberry, tart blueberry, earth notes, mocha, caramel and figs. Rich without being too over the top. This is the old style" Copain in that its a big fruit forward wine, the age (from memory) seems to have settled the wine into a really good spot. Its been about 3 years since I have had this wine, and I remember it being less approachable - in a really good spot now.

While drinking this with some of the excellent Prime Rib from Krista, a few of our guests thought the spices made it "taste like a Christmas wine"...perhaps just the moment but it paired great with a Christmas dinner...This is a good spot now, I think it will continue to mellow with bottle age, should hold at this level for some time. Only concern is higher ABV may limit the upside....This has turned out to be a really nice wine... (1789 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 11/15/2015 & rated 92 points: Delicious blackberry, boysenberry, and earthy notes on the nose and palate with tasty tannins on the finish. (1672 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 10/27/2015 & rated 92 points: Similar tasting notes to previous bottle. (1626 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 10/21/2015 & rated 92 points: Delicious blackberry, boysenberry, and earthy notes on the nose and palate with tasty tannins on the finish. Drinking well with a long life ahead! (1608 views)
Tasted by lolo66 on 9/4/2015: drank this over 3 days. Wow, this is real good and stayed that way. Juicy with bright black and blue berries. Just a touch of earth in background. This has a lot of good tension and makes this just a flat out winner. Wish it wasn't so pricy, but it is what it is. (1652 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 6/15/2015: Just shy of 2 years since the last bottle. It's kind of a trip to sit down with a Copain syrah that has these kinds of flavors, all stuffed up with blue and black tones. The bottles has been laying down for several years and I can see the gunk all caked up along the neck of the bottle. Anyway, open and to the taste. This to me is starting to soften, as just open an hour and at room temp (70f), this is pretty approachable. I was expecting more coil, maybe some chalk or olive, stem...not seeing any of this right now. There is a bucket of dark, berry-like fruit, with touch a hint of raisin, dark chocolate, yet it has the Copain touch to show some juicy tones so the fruit isn't all about density and sweetness. Given the higher booze ABV on this, we'll revisit tomorrow as a glass or so is about as much as I can do....roll forward another day, basically the same conditions--temp, stem and a clean palate. This is really a juicy rendition of JB. Further, it does kind of reflect the Copain shift, which is clearly evident in the newer vintages like 11 and 12 (not JB, of course, but the house style is my point). It has the juicy base. Heat? Nah, don't find it. As it sits and fleshes out, the juicy, blue tones elongate and the wine shows the acidity that is also part of the new era Copain style. With all that is here in the glass tonight, no rush to drink these if you have them. And, if there is any thought that this will be warmer edged Paso-ripe, it ain't. Should last another 5 years, I'd think. Good, but not great and epic like the 2007. (1964 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

James Berry Vineyard

Under the expert care of Justin Smith, James Berry Vineyard has quickly established itself as one of the premiere Rhône varietal vineyards in the state. The “Carlisle” block of James Berry Vineyard is located just below the terraced “Bone Rock” section and is planted to Syrah clones 470 and 174. Justin practices sustainable farming, using no chemical fertilizers or pesticides. And with the limestone laden soils and devigorating rootstock, the vines struggle, yielding small quantities of intensely flavored fruit.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
